Pontian dental clinic probed after accidentally displaying Jalur Gemilang upside down
Pontian deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Abd Hamid Abdul Rahman said initial investigations showed that the incident at the clinic in Pusat Perdagangan Pontian on Wednesday (Aug 20) was not intentional.
'The flag was put up incorrectly due to negligence by the person who installed it and not with the purpose of insulting or showing disrespect towards the national symbol.
'The clinic owner has cooperated fully and has since corrected the flag's position,' he said in a statement.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
DSP Abd Hamid also reminded the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could cause racial tension or disrupt public order.
'The Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of the nation's sovereignty that must be respected by all.
'We urge everyone to ensure the flag is displayed correctly, especially during the Merdeka month celebrations,' he said.
Earlier, a video clip showing a group of policemen entering the clinic made the rounds on social media following images of the upside-down Jalur Gemilang displayed beside the Johor flag, which was hung in the right position.

Two young brothers drown at retention pond in Ipoh
IPOH: Two young brothers were found drowned in a retention pond near a construction site at Lebuh Perindustrian Sin Yong Seng in Taman Chemor Ria here. Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the two primary schoolchildren, aged eight and nine, were found in the pond by passers-by on Wednesday (Aug 20) at about 8.30pm. "Initial investigation found that both victims had gone to the construction site near their rented home to play prior to the incident. "Both victims were sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for emergency treatment but were declared dead at about 9.40pm," he said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 21). "The post-mortem report found that both died from drowning," he added. ACP Abang Zainal Abidin said checks conducted found that the construction site was not boarded up and had no warning signs to deter people from entering. He said the case would be investigated under Section 33 of the Children Act as there were elements of neglect of the children. "We would like to advise people to always prioritise their children's safety, especially when near risky locations like rivers, pools, ex-mining ponds or construction sites. "Developers or contractors are also reminded to adhere to safety regulations by putting up fences and warning signs to prevent any untoward incidents," he said. Fresh out of jail, man caught attempting robbery at eatery
KANGAR: A man who was released from prison just six months ago has been arrested after attempting to rob a food outlet in Beseri on Aug 16. The 35-year-old construction worker was said to have entered the premises in Kampung Padang Melangit at about 12.07pm, where a woman was tending the counter. Kangar Police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the suspect pretended to order a fried chicken set worth RM12 before forcing his way behind the counter. "He then pointed a folding knife at the victim and threatened to stab her if she refused to hand over the cash. "The woman screamed for help, prompting the suspect to flee the scene on a motorcycle without taking any money or valuables," he told reporters at the Kangar district police headquarters today. The victim was unharmed, and no losses were reported. "Acting on intelligence, police arrested the suspect at about 4.45pm the same day along Jalan Sungai Baru, Simpang Empat. He attempted to escape and scuffled with police before being subdued," Yusharifuddin said. Checks found that the man had 20 prior records involving criminal activities and drug-related offences. The suspect was remanded for four days until yesterday and his remand has been extended for another case linked to him. "Prosecutors have directed that he be charged under Section 393 of the Penal Code, Section 7(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, and Section 28(i)(ii) of the Minor Offences Act 1955," Yusharifuddin added.
