Girder launching work of Thane's Kopri railway flyover completed

Indian Express2 days ago
The installation of girders for the Kopri railway flyover, a key connector between Thane East and Thane West, undertaken by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was completed this week, as part of the ongoing Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) project under the Smart City initiative, officials said on Friday.
The critical work on the important stretch over the railway track, which had been pending for almost a year, involved the placement of heavy girders across tracks and was executed using special mega railway blocks.
The girder launching work began on July 26 and was completed over multiple nights. To set the stage ready for work, the traffic police set in place vehicle diversions to and from Thane East for eight days, even before the girder installation work began.
'That night, two girders weighing approximately 100 tonnes were lifted and placed across the railway lines. On July 27, another girder weighing 50 tonnes was installed. The final two girders, both weighing 100 tonnes, were launched late on the night of July 29 and successfully installed by early morning on July 30,' a Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officer associated with the project said on Friday.
Traffic on the Kopri flyover was diverted to allow for the safe movement of cranes and equipment.
'A team of 18 engineers and 40 workers carried out the nighttime operations,' the officer added.
With the main phase of work now done, traffic congestion in the Kopri area is expected to reduce. The remaining construction work will continue until August 4 without further traffic diversions, officials said.
With the railway section of the work now complete, the rest of the project is expected to gain momentum. The remaining phases will be carried out during night shifts until August 4, with traffic halts on the Kopri flyover, said the officer.
The project is part of TMC's effort to improve connectivity and decongest the area around the station. The planning and execution of the girder installation was led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Malvi, Deputy City Engineer Sudhir Gaikwad, and Executive Engineer Dhananjay Mode.

Aundh, Baner-Balewadi residents raise concern over traffic chaos, demand better roads, clearing of encroachments

1 2 Pune: Residents of Aundh, Baner-Balewadi on Thursday flagged various issues hampering daily commute, such as traffic chaos, poor condition of roads, and broken lids of drainage chambers in their areas. At a mohalla committee meeting held at Aundh ward office, the residents demanded that the civic authorities initiate steps to solve these issues. The residents said they expected some positive outcomes before the next meeting. Kalyani Tokekar, a local resident who attended the meeting, said, "Lack of maintenance of roads is a serious issue. Poor condition of roads has been causing many problems for riders and walkers, slowing down overall traffic. We also brought to notice that a person lost life recently in the area due to the poor condition of roads. The officials assured us that the roads would be repaired soon." Another resident, Mahesh Sutar, said many roads in Sutarwadi and adjacent areas lack proper stormwater channels, leading to frequent waterlogging. Drainage chambers should be repaired at regular intervals. Many Smart City projects are not handed over to the civic administration, owing to which these facilities are not being brought to use. Sutar also suggested some changes in the PMPML bus routes to benefit commuters. Aundh resident Ajay Shinde said that civic officials should carry out inspection drives of roads at key junctions and market areas jointly with citizens. Officials from the Aundh ward office said that steps would be taken to resolve maximum issues. "We will also work in coordination with the road and drainage departments to carry out repairs," officials said.

Madurai corpn cracks down on construction dust violations

Cleared/335 Words Madurai: Amid mounting complaints over dust and debris from construction sites, Madurai corporation has issued a directive to builders, mandating the use of green safety nets to cover ongoing construction activities and material-laden vehicles. The civic body warned that uncovered sites and demolition works pose serious environmental hazards, threaten public safety, and disrupt traffic flow. Violators will face penalties and legal action. Corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan told TOI that fines will be enforced as complaints continue to rise. Despite these measures, the city's efforts to handle construction and demolition (C&D) waste remain stalled. More than three years after announcing a 6 crore project to establish a C&D waste processing plant, the corporation has yet to finalise an agency to execute it. The plant, proposed in 2022, was to be set up at Vellaikal with the capacity to process 100 tonnes of waste per day under a public private partnership (PPP) model on a design-build-finance-operate-transfer (DBFOT) basis. In addition to the main facility, three collection centres were proposed at Vellaikal, Kochadai, and Gatelock Road. Once operational, the plant would recycle debris into paver blocks, kerb stones, tiles, and brick dust — materials that could be reused in corporation works or sold in the market if there's surplus production. Officials said the initiative was designed to reduce illegal dumping and generate revenue for the civic body. However, illegal dumping continues unchecked in several parts of the city, particularly in housing board areas in Villapuram and Anupanadi, Ismailpuram, Bethaniyapuram, and Annaiyur. Despite imposing fines of up to 10,000 on violators and deploying zonal engineers to monitor activity, the issue persists, said officials. M Rajan, chief of Vaigai Nathi Makkal Iyakkam, said the problem started during the Smart City projects. "Much of the construction waste from Smart City works was dumped near the riverbank in Bethaniyapuram. That area is now being used by private builders too," he said. Rajan said that the unchecked dumping not only makes commutes unpleasant but also contributes to deteriorating air quality in several localities. Graphic Input Total amount of construction waste generated in Madurai: Around 150 tonnes per day Processing capacity of the plant: 100 tonnes per day Cost of processing one tonne of waste: Around Rs2,500- Rs4,500 Products obtained out of processing: Tiles, paver blocks, kerb stones, and brick dust Authorised construction waste collection centres: 1. Kochadai yard 2. Gatelock Road yard 3. Vellaikal yard
