Court suspends sentence of Rajasthan Congress MLAs in road blockade case
Congress MLAs Mukesh Bhakar, elected from Ladnun, and Manish Yadav, representing Shahpura, were among the student leaders who staged a protest and blocked Jawaharlal Nehru Marg outside the university's gate for about 20 minutes on August 13, 2014. A magistrate's court had found them guilty and handed down the sentence on June 18.
The convicts also included an unsuccessful Congress candidate in the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly election. All of them convicted under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation), and 341 (wrongful restraint) of Indian Penal Code and sentenced to one year's imprisonment each, along with the imposition of fine of ₹3,200 each.
Among the convicts, Abhishek Chaudhary contested the 2023 Assembly election as a Congress candidate from Jaipur's Jhotwara constituency and lost. The other convicts in the case were Rajesh Meena, Ravi Kirad, Wasim Khan, Dron Yadav, Bhanu Pratap Singh and Vidyadhar Meel.
Additional Sessions Judge Prem Ratan Ojha accepted the contention of the appellants that they would be deprived of their legal rights if the sentence was not suspended. The court granted relief to the convicts and posted the case for further hearing on August 26.
The Assembly membership of both Mr. Bhakar and Mr. Yadav remains unaffected following the sentencing, as a legislator can be disqualified only on being convicted for an offence with a two-year sentence or more, as per Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

On this News Today, the focus is on the Enforcement Directorate's actions against key figures linked to the Congress party, including the arrest of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's son, Chaitanya Baghel, in connection with an alleged liquor scam, and the filing of a charge sheet against Robert Vadra, brother-in-law of Rahul Gandhi, in a Haryana land deal case. Rahul Gandhi has defended his brother-in-law, calling the action a long-standing 'witch-hunt.' The programme explores whether these actions represent vigilant law enforcement or political vendetta. Also discussed is the US designation of The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation, following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22nd, identifying TRF as a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba. The US statement avoids directly mentioning Pakistan, raising questions. The father of a victim of the attack, Rajesh Narwal, questioned when the perpetrators would feel the same pain as the families.

Smart electricity meters being imposed against will of consumers: Patwari
Bhopal: Congress state president Jitu Patwari on Friday launched a scathing attack on the energy department over the complaints of abnormal increase in electricity bills due to smart meters that were "being forced on consumers". He argued that such imposition is economic injustice for the common man and demanded immediate intervention by the state govt. "The Supreme Court has said that installation of smart meters is dependent on the will of the consumer, but despite this, electricity companies are forcibly installing smart meters," Patwari said. Earlier, where the bills would be between Rs 300 to Rs 600, now after the installation of smart meters, people are upset seeing bills ranging from Rs 6,000 to Rs 20,000. It has become a means of smart loot," he argued. Patwari said that reports of smart meters catching fire or exploding have been reported from several cities in India. These incidents have become a cause of fear and anxiety among consumers, especially when their bills are also increasing drastically, he said. "Recently, a blast in a newly installed smart meter was reported in Kolar area of Bhopal. These DISCOMs are working in collaboration with private companies in whose interest the smart meters are being forcibly installed, the state PCC chief said. "There should be an independent and high-level investigation of the readings, technical flaws and billing process," Patwari said. "Abnormally increased bills should be immediately cancelled, and new bills should be issued on the basis of actual consumption," he added.
