Karnataka's caste survey different from Centre's: CM Siddaramaiah
Addressing the media in Davanagere, the CM said that he has no objection to the Centre carrying out a caste census.
Siddaramaiah said that his government's caste census is driven by the imperative of social justice and will help in creating an equal society. He added that the Centre has not clarified whether its census is a social, economic, and educational survey similar to the Karnataka caste census. 'The Centre is only doing a caste census. We are conducting a comprehensive socio-educational and caste survey,' he reiterated.
The CM's remark comes following a gazette notification stating that the national caste census would begin on March 1, 2027, while in certain regions like the Union Territory of Ladakh, snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, it would begin on October 1, 2026.
To provide social justice, a social, economic and educational survey should be conducted, the CM said. 'The situation of people should be known to formulate welfare schemes. We are conducting a social, economic and educational survey in order to provide social justice,' the CM added.
'The powerful have opposed it. There is no such thing as the powerful and the weak. It has already been 10 years since the H Kantharaj-led Karnataka State Permanent Backward Classes Commission conducted a caste survey.
Therefore, according to Section 11 of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Act, if a report is a decade old, a new report must be prepared. Hence, we are conducting a fresh survey,' Siddaramaiah added.

Centre okays ₹8,146 crore investment for 700 MW hydro project in Arunachal Pradesh
New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs ( CCEA ) on Tuesday approved an investment of ₹8,146.21 crore for the construction of 700 megawatt (MW) Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh , with an estimated completion period of 72 months. The Centre will provide ₹458.79 crore as Budgetary support for the construction of roads, bridges and associated transmission lines under enabling infrastructure, and ₹436.13 crore as central financial assistance towards the state's equity share. The project, with an installed capacity of four units of 175 MW each, will produce 2,738.06 million units (MU) of energy annually. The power generated will improve electricity supply in Arunachal Pradesh and help in balancing the national grid. The project will be implemented through a joint venture between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and the Arunachal Pradesh government. Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12 per cent free power from the project and another one per cent towards the Local Area Development Fund. The initiative will involve the development of about 32.88 kilometres of roads and bridges, which will largely be available for local use. Essential infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, marketplaces and playgrounds will also be developed with a dedicated project fund of ₹20 crore. The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities and extend benefits to local suppliers, enterprises and MSMEs. According to the government, the Tato-II project is aligned with the objectives of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and will contribute to infrastructure development and socio-economic growth in the region.

Faisal Patel, son of late Congress stalwart Ahmed Patel, has showered rare praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership during Operation Sindoor, the military response to terror bases in Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 civilian lives. The remarks come at a politically sensitive time, with the Congress party openly criticising the BJP-led Centre over its handling of the operation. Yet Faisal Patel, while reaffirming his association with the Congress, struck a markedly different tone, somewhat echoing Congress MP from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor. Speaking to ANI, Congress stalwart Ahmed Patel's son Faisal was emphatic in his approval of the Modi government's crisis management. 'It can't be better than who's running the show (the central government) ... The armed forces have done a great job, and PM Narendra Modi showed great leadership and brought us out of a huge crisis,' he said. Faisal Patel further applauded the prime minister's approach to choosing capable bureaucrats and elevating them to key ministerial roles. 'I am proud of our armed forces. I have a lot of respect for Jaishankar ji. How Modi ji picks up bureaucrats and makes them leaders and puts them in ministry roles, is a very good thing,' he added. While clarifying that he remains a Congress member, Faisal Patel did not shy away from voicing his concerns about the party's internal functioning. 'Rahul Gandhi is a hardworking leader. There are some very bright and intelligent leaders in the Congress, like Shashi Tharoor, DK Shivakumar, Revanth Reddy, Deependra Hooda, and Sachin Pilot. They are very capable leaders. There are problems internally, and I believe the right advice is not given to seniors who are running the party... Their advisors are not doing a good job. They come and go. The senior leaders' advice is not heeded,' he remarked. Patel said he has taken a 'sabbatical from public life' but has not left the party. 'I am not upset with the Congress at all. The whole party is my family, and I have good relations with the senior leaders of the party... I am still in the Congress party... I just exist in Congress... The people of Gujarat and the local leaders have wonderful things to say about me,' he said. The late Congress leader's son also expressed strong confidence in India's defence apparatus and the current leadership's commitment to national security.
