Turbidity of the Khandepar swells after downpour rage
Ponda: The incessant rain in the catchment areas of Khandepar and Kalem rivers during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday has raised the turbidity of raw water in the Khandepar river. The Opa Water Works recorded river water turbidity of 325 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit) on Friday afternoon. Turbidity refers to opaqueness or cloudiness. Water containing 1mg of finely divided silica per litre has a turbidity of 1 NTU and up to 50 NTU is considered normal. However, data shows that such a high rise in turbidity has been seen far earlier this year as compared to the past eight years. Sunil Kerkar, an assistant engineer of the department of drinking water said the early arrival of the monsoon contributed to the spike in turbidity. Kerkar said that the phenomenon is common during heavy rainfall. He said silt washes off from catchment areas and pours into river water, leading to high turbidity. Sometimes consumers too get turbid water. 'Water is released to consumers only after proper filtration is carried out at Opa water treatment plants,' Kerkar said. After raw water is drawn into a receiving chamber from a river, it flows into sedimentation tanks to allow silt to settle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Check Out Local Car Deals Near You! High turbidity levels, however, cost the state exchequer dearly, as several million litres of treated water is used to clean the clogged filters every year. The filters quickly become non-functional due to the density of mining sediments. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Soil from trench washed away at Ponda, power cables exposed
Ponda: The soft soil used to fill the electric cable trench at Khandepar, Ponda, was washed away after incessant rain during Thursday night leaving the cables exposed. The electricity department has claimed that there is no threat or danger since the cables are not electrified yet. The department had also begun work to refill the trench by taking precautions so that it is not washed off again. Deepak Gawas, electricity executive engineer at the Curti Ponda sub-station, said the cables are being laid to carry 33kv power to the water treatment plants at Curti hill. The work is still under way. He said that continuous rain and the lack of proper storm water drainage caused the soil covering the trench to wash away. He added that the heavy flow of rainwater down the hilly terrain added to the situation . Gawas said the cables are being laid between the Curti-Ponda sub-station and Curti water treatment plants. Of the 1km-long trench, only 30m of the trench has created issues. Work is going on war footing and will be carried out with proper care, Gawas said. Rains leave parts of Hyderabad in the dark, residents fume
Hyderabad: Heavy overnight rains on Thursday plunged several parts of Hyderabad into darkness, with widespread power outages reported across the city. By Friday morning, many localities were still without electricity, sparking frustration among residents and raising questions about the city's infrastructure preparedness. The power supply was reportedly snapped shortly after the downpour began around 10:30 pm. Neighbourhoods, including Moula Ali, Tolichowki, LB Nagar, Masab Tank, Attapur and parts of Secunderabad were among the worst-affected. Many residents woke up on Friday morning to find no updates or timelines from the electricity department regarding restoration. "We lost power around 10 pm, just as the rain intensified, and there was no sign of restoration even by 11 am," said Sabera Begum, a resident of Attapur. "We couldn't sleep properly, and it's worse for families with elderly members or children who need constant care." The outage disrupted daily routines — many office-goers and students struggled with low phone batteries, dead WiFi connections, and no access to fans or geysers. Lavanya, a homemaker from Masab Tank, said, "Power came back briefly around 9 am, but as it began raining again, we lost it within an hour. Is our system so fragile that every time it rains, we're forced to live in the dark?" In some localities, the outages lasted more than 10 hours, raising concerns about the resilience of the power grid. Responding to this, Musharraf Ali, chairman of Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL), said, "Power was restored in many areas immediately. However, localities where trees fell or feeders were damaged took more time." He added that a long-term solution is in the works. "We are preparing a detailed project report to take the city's entire overhead electricity infrastructure underground. This will ensure power supply remains unaffected during adverse weather conditions." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
