Boston University can't corral Western Michigan, falls in NCAA hockey title game

Iiro Hakkarainen's goal at 16:02 effectively squashed any hopes of a BU comeback and delivered Western Michigan's first national championship. Michaels added an empty-netter to account for the 6-2 final, giving him four goals in the two Frozen Four contests.

The Broncos (33-7-1) jumped out to the early lead when Wyatt Schingoethe redirected a shot from Iiro Hakkarainen past Yegorov just 1:38 into the contest.

Western Michigan had a chance to extend the lead on a Liam Valente breakaway later in the period, but Yegorov denied the Providence transfer's bid.
BU got the equalizer at 7:12 on Cole Eiserman's 25th goal of the season. Kamil Bednarik and Devin Kaplan attempted a give-and-go, but Kaplan's return pass eluded Bednarik and got through to Broncos goalie Hampton Slukynsky, who made the stop and denied Kaplan's rebound attempt.
But the Western Michigan goalie could not settle the puck, though, allowing Eiserman a couple of whacks before he was finally able to poke it into the net.

But the Broncos seized the lead once again, as Tom Willander's bid to clear the puck from the front of the BU net went straight to Cole Crusberg-Roseen, whose one-timer beat Yegorov at 15:01 to give Western Michigan a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.
Western Michigan doubled the lead 5:18 into the second when Cam Knuble drove to the net, where Yegorov denied his backhanded bid, but Ty Henricks was there to knock home the rebound for a 3-1 advantage.
BU got its first power play at 10:26 of the second after Brian Kramer was whistled for holding. The Terriers needed all of 16 seconds to pull within one when Ryan Greene sent a blast in from the point that Slukynsky stopped, but Shane Lachance, stationed in front of the net, knocked the rebound in at 10:42. Western Michigan's challenge for goalie interference was denied, and the goal stood.
Knuble came close to again giving Western Michigan a two-goal lead at 14:54, but the puck clanged off the right post. BU got its second power play of the game 46 seconds later when Henricks went off for slashing at 15:40.
After Western Michigan killed it off, Devin Kaplan was whistled for kneeing at 18:14, putting the Broncos back on the power play, but they could not capitalize despite several good looks to close out the period.
Keith Tkachuk was the guest of honor for the ceremonial puck drop. The former Malden Catholic and Boston University standout played 18 seasons in the NHL, nine in St. Louis. In 1,201 games, 'Big Walt' collected 538 goals, 1,065 points, and 2,219 minutes in penalties. Introduced as 'a St. Louis hockey legend', Tkachuk got a nice ovation from the Enterprise Center crowd.

Arizona Cardinals injury updates: OL Jon Gaines, WR Simi Fehoko return to practice

OL Jon Gaines (thumb) and WR Simi Fehoko (quad) return to practice after missing last week and the preseason opener. The Arizona Cardinals are getting healthier on offense and a couple of player expected to be key reserves are returning to practice. On Tuesday, head coach Jonathan Gannon said that offensive lineman Jon Gaines and receiver Simi Fehoko would return to practice. Gaines had been out with a thumb injury. Fehoko had a quad injury. Gaines is expected to be the team's backup center but missed the preseason opener, and rookie Hayden Conner player in his place. Fehoko was an offseason addition in free agency and is battling for a roster spot. He might have an edge because almost all his 2025 salary is guaranteed. He is 6-foot-4 with speed and can do things on special teams. Two veteran defensive linemen were out to start the week. Justin Jones remains out with a knee injury. He did not play in the preseason opener. Dalvin Tomlinson, who played but was seen limping the locker room after the game, would not practice, Gannon said. The Cardinals practice Tuesday and Wednesday before flying out to Denver to have a joint practice on Thursday before playing the Broncos on Saturday. Former NFL offensive lineman hints that he's willing to unretire and return to the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers looked outmatched in their Saturday night battle with the Denver Broncos that resulted in a 30-9 loss despite Kyle Shanahan's team holding a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. San Francisco's first possession of the game was eight plays for 71 yards and was capped off by a Patrick Taylor touchdown run to put them up 7-0. Their following 11 drives went no where, with three interceptions and a lost fumble thrown in. While there's plenty of blame to spread around, some 49ers fans really focused on the offensive line, with one social media user actually reaching out to former 49ers offensive lineman Jonathan Feliciano during the game to ask him to help out. Interestingly, Feliciano responded and said "Tell John [Lynch] to call me." Feliciano, 33, spent 10 seasons in the NFL, including stints with the Oakland Raiders (2015-18), Buffalo Bills (2019-21) and New York Giants (2022). He finished his career with two years in San Francisco, but after starting seven games for the team in 2023, he missed all of 2024 with an injury and announced his retirement in February. There was a real chance that Feliciano could've played a significant role on their offensive line last year had a knee injury not ended his season before it began. And, with some still wondering if Ben Bartch is the 49ers best option at left guard, Feliciano could challenge for the position if he came back in good shape. Another social media user asked if he'd take a phone call from Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane as well, and he simply confirmed that he would. That seems to indicate that he's truly mulling a comeback for the right opportunity, and if San Francisco is looking for talented players with the experience in the system, they may not find a better guy at this point in the year than article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Did former 49ers' OL Jon Feliciano hint that he's willing to unretire?
