Universal deny that head Lucian Grainge was personally involved in Kendrick Lamar attack on Drake

Universal Music Group has denied new allegations made by Drake's lawyers that its British chair and chief executive Lucian Grainge had a 'role in and knowledge of the scheme to defame and harass' the Canadian rapper by peer Kendrick Lamar, and that as such the label should 'collect, review and produce' communications by Grainge. Drake is suing UMG – his label Republic's parent company – over its release of Lamar's 2024 diss track Not Like Us, which contains the line: 'Say, Drake, I hear you like 'em young … Certified Lover Boy? Certified pedophiles.' The artwork for the global hit single features an image of Drake's home dotted with icons used to identify the homes of registered sex offenders. Drake has denied the allegations, and in January filed a lawsuit against UMG – not Lamar himself – alleging that it 'approved, published and launched a campaign to create a viral hit out of a rap track' that was 'intended to convey the specific, unmistakable and false factual allegation that Drake is a criminal paedophile, and to suggest that the public should resort to vigilante justice in response'. The label initially responded that the suit was 'utterly without merit'. Drake's latest motion argued that Drake believes 'Grainge was personally involved in decisions made regarding the marketing and promotion of [Not Like Us] around its release'. Lawyers for UMG have now called for Drake's motion to be denied, labelling it a 'transparent attempt to use discovery to harass UMG and force it to waste time and resources out of spite' and that his 'attempts to show Sir Lucian's relevance are so strained that they defy credulity'. In legal documents, Grainge declared that he never heard the song prior to its release. Lawyer Rollin A Ransom continued: 'The premise of Drake's motion – that he could not have lost a rap battle unless it was the product of some imagined secret conspiracy going to the top of UMG's corporate structure – is absurd. Sir Lucian is the CEO of a multinational enterprise; his days are spent determining and implementing global strategy, not vetting individual tracks or album covers or driving the release and promotional plans for any one recording.' Drake previously agreed not to seek documents from Grainge, the letter states. 'And even if Sir Lucian had any responsive documents, they would surely be captured by discovery from UMG's other document custodians, who were actually responsible for releasing and promoting Not Like Us. Drake does not come close to meeting his burden of showing that Sir Lucian must be a custodian.' The letter concludes: 'Drake argues that Sir Lucian must be a custodian for no other reason than because Drake asked for him. That is entirely inconsistent with the law and is particularly inappropriate given that Drake's request is clearly based on a desire to harass UMG, rather than for a legitimate reason.' Drake has not responded to the new filing. The Guardian has contacted his representatives. UMG is seeking to have the case dismissed entirely, claiming in March that Drake 'lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated … diss tracks are a popular and celebrated art form centred around outrageous insults, and they would be severely chilled if Drake's suit were permitted to proceed'.

Actor David Morrissey faces losing driving licence after ‘being caught speeding three times within a week', court hears

Actor David Morrissey could lose his driving license after he was allegedly caught speeding three times within a week, a court heard. The 61-year-old is accused of driving his £40,000 Mini Countryman at 46mph in a 40mph zone on the A406 in Willesden, north-west London, at 5.41am on August 2 last year. Just two days later, he was allegedly clocked at 55mph and 48mph in 40mph zones on the A40 near Greenford on August 4 at 5.23am and 5 at 2.35am. The BAFTA-nominated actor already has nine points on his licence and could face a driving ban if convicted. Morrissey, of Camden, north London, denied three charges of excess speeding 40mph and didn't attend his three-hour trial at Willesden Magistrates' Court yesterday. Representing the actor, Conall Bailie, said: 'Mr Morrissey knows that if he is convicted that he is in prospect of disqualification. 'He is not obliged to attend but has chosen not to attend. I will warn him that he may be convicted.' District Judge Jack Walsh said: 'I appreciate that he is a very busy man. But if he is convicted, he may have to attend for that. District Judge Jack Walsh adjourned the final hearing to August 20 at Willesden Magistrates' Court. Morrissey, whose net worth is in the region of £2.4million, was married to the daughter of painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, Esther Freud, but they separated in 2020. His debut role came when he was cast in the television series One Summer (1983) at the age of 18. He then attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. Morrissey is best known for playing 'The Governor' in the FX series The Walking Dead. He was nominated for a BAFTA for his role as Stephen Collins in the 2003 political thriller series, State of Play. Other notable roles include Ripley Holden in 'Blackpool', Aulus Platius in the Sky TV show 'Britannia,' and the criminal taxi driver Vince McKee in BBC drama 'The Driver'. In 2022, he starred in the BBC crime series 'Sherwood,' which won a Best Drama Series award in 2023. Morrissey has also directed short films and the television dramas Sweet Revenge (2001) and Passer By (2004).

Speeding Ferrari driver pleads with cops not to tow his car before calling mom to pick him

A whining Ferrari driver pleaded with Canadian cops to let him off the hook for speeding before calling his mom when the luxury car got towed. In footage of the comical encounter shared by York Regional Police on August 5, a white Ferrari driver is heard begging to be spared a Stunt Driving charge after being pulled over in Aurora, Ontario. He pulled out all the stops - relentlessly pleading and telling the officer it was his birthday - but his desperate efforts were unsuccessful. The bizarre story began when the cop approached the car and calmly said, 'I'm sure you're aware why I pulled you over.' Immediately, the speeding driver acted clueless: 'What'd I do?' After the officer explained he had been driving 130 kilometers per hour, which is about 70 miles per hour, the driver quickly became defensive. 'Speeding? I'm on my way to my birthday party. I haven't driven the Ferrari for a while,' he said as he rambled off excuses. The pair started going back and forth, as the man behind the wheel insisted he was not going that fast. Trying to diffuse the situation without backing down, the officer offered to show him the speed radar, proving he was truly going over the limit. As the birthday boy exited the sports car to check out the radar, he let out an exaggerated groan. 'That's me?' he asked upon reviewing his high speed driving. He then once again pivoted to the birthday argument, hoping it would stick this time. 'Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do,' the policeman bluntly replied. The driver's discontent was only amplified once he realized he was getting more than a ticket. Once the officer informed him he was getting hit with a Stunt Driving offense - which includes using excessive speeds, dangerous maneuvers or racing - he pouted even more. He took a drawn-out gasp before ramping up his begging: ''I'm on my way to my birthday party, please officer! Please! 'I got to have my mother and father come to pick me up.' As he was forced to accept defeat and forfeit his high-end vehicle, he made a phone call to his mom from the side of the road. 'Mom! You have to come pick me up, the police pulled me over,' he said. At the end of the clip, which appears to be from last year, the police department playfully wrote: 'Even if you're going to your birthday party, there is no excuse for Stunt Driving.' The driver faced a 30-day license suspension, a two-week vehicle impound and fines. The video was humorously captured: 'Do you think this guy's parents still let him have cake and open presents?' While speeding is a serious offense, viewers found the ordeal absolutely hilarious, commenting on the driver's unexpected reaction. 'Grown man crying "officerrrrrr,"' one man wrote. 'My condolences to the officer having to listen to adult Caillou….' another chimed in. 'The guy sounds like a whiny 8 year old,' someone said with a laughing face emoji. 'Pwiddy pweeze Mr officer. I won't do it again. Waaaaaa,' one user said, mocking the driver's dramatic tone. 'C'mon this can't be real,' someone wrote in disbelief. 'This is like a scene from a lost episode of Seinfeld or something.'
