Mohd Na'im calls for ulama to guide government on Muslim affairs
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar stressed the importance of strengthening ties between religious scholars and national leaders to ensure the country progresses on the right path.
'If there are issues that require advice or criticism, we (the government) are open to it,' he said after officiating the National Umara'-Ulama' Pondok Dialogue (UMRAN) 2025 at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque.
The three-day event, themed 'Fiqh Mizan in Driving the MADANI Ummah', gathered 200 pondok teachers and scholars nationwide. Mohd Na'im highlighted that the dialogue aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's vision for pondok ulama to contribute actively to national policies.
He added that his ministry plans to hold UMRAN regularly, providing a platform for scholars to exchange ideas and strengthen networking among pondok institutions. 'This meeting will reinforce their role in society,' he said.
Mohd Na'im also called for modernizing pondok education while preserving its core values. Proposed reforms include enhancing teachers' understanding of global issues, exposing students to technology and foreign languages, and improving institutional safety and cooperation.
'UMRAN serves as a bridge between Islamic jurisprudence and governance, ensuring ulama's voices influence national policies and development remains syariah-guided,' he said. - Bernama

GENERAL MIRI, July 22 (Bernama) -- The close cooperation between Sarawak and the Federal Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim proves that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is a respected and formidable political force. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the appointment of Sarawak native Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof as Deputy Prime Minister, along with the presence of several federal ministers from the state, was a significant recognition of Sarawak. 'Never before has a Sarawakian been entrusted with the responsibility of Deputy Prime Minister. This shows that Sarawak under the GPS platform is a respected political power,' he said in his speech at the 62nd Sarawak Day celebration here tonight. As the head of the GPS government, he said the strong collaboration with the Federal Government would continue in the interest of both the nation and Sarawak, adding that the state's pursuit of prosperity would not hinder national development. 'The increase in Sarawak's revenue, including through the state sales tax, will not reduce the federal revenue as the Federal Government has ample room to boost its income without burdening the people,' he said. Abang Johari also rebuked claims by certain quarters that Sarawak was being 'excessive' or greedy in asserting its rights, stressing that the demands were based on the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). He said GPS would continue fighting for Sarawak's rights through negotiations with the Federal Government, guided by the MA63 framework. 'Sarawak has successfully regained nine rights enshrined under MA63, and efforts will continue to reclaim all those that have been eroded,' he said. He also reflected on the key decision made by Sarawak's leaders 62 years ago to join in forming Malaysia for greater security and prosperity.

Authorities Cannot Threaten Whistleblowers, Albert Tei Asked To Make Report
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Any individual who comes forward to provide information on any improper conduct cannot be blocked or threatened by any party, including the authorities. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said this was because the authorities should protect whistleblowers under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Act 711). 'I have taken note of Albert Tei's lawyer today, regarding the allegation that Albert Tei had contacted the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding a corruption scandal but was warned by MACC officers not to appear in public or he would face problems. 'This is a very serious allegation and is completely unacceptable… I would like to advise the individual named Albert Tei to immediately file a report regarding this issue with the Royal Malaysian Police and the MACC Complaints Committee under Section 15 of the MACC Act 2009 (Act 694) by naming the MACC officers involved in the allegation. 'I give full assurance that the MADANI Government will not compromise on issues of threats like these, and that stern action will be taken if the allegation is found to be true,' he said when winding up the debate on the Whistleblower Protection (Amendment) Bill 2025 in Parliament today. The bill was later passed with a majority of votes in agreement after being debated by 24 Members of Parliament (MPs). During the debate on the bill, several MPs raised the issue of a media report today regarding a statement by Albert Tei's lawyer, Mahajoth Singh, who claimed that his client was warned by the MACC not to come forward before he exposed the mining scandal in Sabah. Regarding the Whistleblower Protection Committee in the amendment to the bill, Kulasegaran said the government would ensure that the committee's membership was free from conflicts of interest and of a high calibre. He said that among the proposed members would be parties with knowledge and expertise in the aspect of whistleblower protection, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or civil society organisations (CSOs), as well as academic experts.
