PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes struck out nine and gave up three hits in six innings, Oneil Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes drove in two runs each, and the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second straight game, 6-0 on Sunday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes (6-8) is the first pitcher to have an ERA below 2 through his first 45 starts. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year sits at 1.89 for his career and 1.83 this year, which leads the majors. Skenes is the only starter this season who hasn't allowed a first-inning run. He struck out two in the first, including Geraldo Perdomo, who hadn't fanned in a league-best 39 straight at-bats. Jake McCarthy had a one-out triple in the second, but Skenes struck out James McCann and retired Alek Thomas on a popup to short. Skenes also worked around a leadoff double by Tristin English in the third. Cruz walked leading off the Pirates second and the majors stolen base leader with 34 was off and running when Tommy Pham singled to center field on a 1-2 pitch from Zac Gallen for a 1-0 lead. Gallen (7-12) allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. Arizona scored one run in the three-game series, winning 1-0 in 11 innings Friday night. Key moment Skenes hit Eugenio Suárez with a 3-2 pitch leading off the fourth and McCarthy doubled him to third with one out. Skenes then struck out McCann on three pitches and Thomas on six. Browns QB Kenny Pickett reportedly suffers hamstring injury after appearing to take early lead in position battle
Cleveland Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett went down with a hamstring injury on Saturday afternoon in training camp. Specifics of his injury or the severity of it are not yet known, though Pickett is expected to be re-evaluated again later this week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. While there is plenty of time for him to bounce back before their season-opener, the injury could undoubtedly open the door for others deep in the four-man quarterback battle. They then brought in veteran Joe Flacco, who made it clear he didn't want to just sit back and help the room, and the Browns selected two quarterbacks in the NFL Draft earlier this spring. They landed Oregon star Dillon Gabriel and Colorado standout Shedeur Sanders, who ended up sliding down to the fifth round. Though it's still early in the position battle, it's been Pickett that has impressed so far. He's taken a bulk of the first-team reps early on, and took the final snaps at practice on Saturday. He threw a touchdown pass on that play, too, according to ESPN. Flacco and Gabriel, however, have rotated in with him throughout the week. Sanders has yet to receive first-team reps. "His first two days have been stellar," Browns QBs coach Bill Musgrave said of Pickett earlier this week, via ESPN. "He had one throw, he was late yesterday, resulting in an interception, which is OK. We don't want interceptions, but at times we learn from when we stub our toes more than we have our triumphs. But he's had his share of triumphs these last two days, especially throwing on the run. Incredibly accurate for just jumping back into camp after us being off a number of weeks this summer." There are any number of ways the Browns can end up going at quarterback. Flacco is a proven winner throughout his career, but he's entering his 18th season in the league at 40 years old this fall. Gabriel and Sanders are unproven, but were great prospects coming out of college. And Pickett has been a starter in the league, too, though he's now with his third team in four seasons looking to finally find true success after struggling early on in his career. Time will tell who Musgrave and the Browns end up going with for their season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. But if Pickett's hamstring injury lingers, like they often can, the early advantage he's seemingly picked up in the race may disappear quickly in training camp.

🗣️ MLS refs issue response to Cincinnati's disallowed goal vs Inter Miami
There was plenty of refereeing controversy in the highly anticipated MLS showdown between FC Cincinnati and Inter Miami Saturday evening. Miami felt aggrieved over not being awarded a penalty in the second-half when Fafà Picault was taken down in the box. Yet the visitors from Cincinnati were equally dismayed when a stoppage-time Miles Robinson game-winning goal was disallowed for what some perceive to be a soft foul on Noah Allen. Both sets of players remonstrated with the referee after the match, with plenty of fans online making the case that Cincinnati should have been awarded the dramatic game-winning goal. After the match in South Florida Saturday evening, PRO — the MLS referees organization — issued a response to reporters backing up their decision to rule out the goal. "The referee observed a foul committed by #12 Miles Robinson of FC Cincinnati against #32 Noah Allen of Inter Miami, making clear contact with the face," the statement read. "The referee delayed the whistle the allow the opportunity for VAR to review for a possible goal. After a VAR check, the referee's decision was confirmed." Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan remained level-headed in his response after the goalless draw, but nonetheless confirmed that he believed the goal should have stood. A win would have seen Cincinnati remain in first place in the Eastern Conference and the Supporters' Shield race.
