Check babies' hearing levels regularly, parents told
Published on: Tue, Apr 29, 2025 Text Size: Dr Yogendra in a group photo with the workshop participants. Kota Kinabalu: Parents are advised to always be alert to their babies' hearing levels in order to detect any issues early, thus, facilitating the recovery process. Sabah Women and Children's Hospital (HWKKS) Director Dr Yogendra A/L Panchalingam, said that hearing problems can affect anyone, including newborn babies. 'Hearing problems are often hidden and can only be detected through screening tests. 'Without early detection, it can affect speech development, cognitive abilities, and social functions in babies and children,' he said when officiating the Bengkel Modul Latihan dan Garis Panduan Privileging Petugas Saringan Pendengaran Bayi (PSPB) at HWKKS, recently. Also present were the Sabah Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Service Head, Dr. Halimudin Sawali, O&G Department Head, Datuk Dr K Balanathan A/L Kathirgamanathan, and Sabah Audiology Service Head, Sitti Ladyia Mohd Salleh. Dr Yogendra added that parents should be cautious because the ear nerves and hearing in babies are easily affected by injury, particularly in the head area. 'If there is a blow or injury to the head, seek an ear and hearing check-up from a medical officer immediately,' he said. The two-day workshop, organised by the HWKKS Audiology Unit, was attended by more than 50 participants, including PSPB staff, paramedics, and medical nurses. According to Dr Yogendra, through the workshop, participants were exposed to the guidelines and standards for PSPB privileging, in addition to enhancing skills in delivering health information to the public. Six papers were presented by invited medical and audiology experts, along with practical training and screening sessions. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 6,144 teen pregnancies recorded in over 2 years, Dewan hears
Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Deputy women, family and community development minister Noraini Ahmad said a 2020 study cited contributing factors to teenage pregnancies such as peer pressure and media influence, particularly exposure to sexually explicit content. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: A total of 6,144 teenage pregnancies were recorded between 2023 and March this year, says deputy women, family and community development minister Noraini Ahmad. Citing health ministry statistics on cases registered at government health facilities, she said 2,737 cases were reported in 2023, 2,752 in 2024, and 655 in the first quarter of 2025. Noraini said that a 2015 study published in the Medical Journal of Malaysia identified limited access to comprehensive reproductive health education as a major factor, which left many teenagers unaware of how to protect themselves from unplanned pregnancies. 'This finding is also supported by the 2019 Study on Adolescent Risk and Protective Factors for Reproductive and Social Health by the National Population and Family Development Board,' Bernama reported her as saying in the Dewan Rakyat during question time today. She was responding to Doris Sophia Brodi (GPS-Sri Aman), who had asked about the number of cases, growth rates and main causes of teenage pregnancies in each state from 2023 to the first quarter of 2025. Noraini said a 2020 study published in the Malaysian Journal of Psychology also cited other contributing factors such as peer pressure and media influence, particularly exposure to sexually explicit content. 'From a socioeconomic perspective, poverty, school dropouts and the lack of job opportunities have also been identified as factors that heighten teenagers' vulnerability to this risk,' she said. Responding to a supplementary question from Doris on a national action plan to address the issue, Noraini said the ministry's initiatives include developing the Reproductive and Social Health Education module and an action plan to tackle underage marriages. 'This module covers reproductive health knowledge, decision-making skills, character development and personal safety from sexual harassment and abuse,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? LDP: Give same urgency to healthcare bullying as Zara
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party Vice President David Ong has urged the government to treat workplace bullying in healthcare with the same urgency as the fight for justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. 'We must not let another tragic case be pushed aside,' Ong said, citing a Tawau Hospital doctor who was bullied so severely by senior colleagues that she fell into deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Advertisement 'Her story is a painful reminder that bullying is not just happening in school, it is destroying lives in our hospitals.' Between 2022 and March 2024, 355 bullying complaints were made through the Health Ministry's MyHelp channel. 'Only 10 were investigated, that's 2.8pc while only four were proven just 1.1pc. 'Even in physical assaults, punishment was often just a warning letter. This is not inefficiency, it looks like deliberate neglect," he stressed. He accused the ministry of protecting bullies instead of victims by transferring them or sending them abroad for training while silencing victims. 'Selective justice is corrupted justice. Every one of the 355 cases must be answered for. Every victim deserves justice. Every bully must face the consequences. 'We will not stop until workplace bullying in healthcare is wiped out and those responsible are held accountable whether it's for Zara, for the Tawau doctor, or for any victim of institutional abuse in Malaysia," he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
