2,000 Free Instruments Given to North Carolina Hurricane Victims
On Sunday, March 9th, a charity drive at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina gave away more than 2,000 free musical instruments to North Carolina hurricane victims, as reported by WLOS.
A riverside community outside of Ashville, Swannanoa was hit particularly hard by the devastating Hurricane Helene. In response, the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour organized the massive instrument giveaway in an effort to assist those affected. The team, including the program's host Michael Johnathon, spent months collecting donated instruments from 36 different drop-off locations in spots like Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, and even Texas and New York.
'We haven't forgotten the situation of folks affected by Helene,' Johnathon said prior to the event. 'You are the comfortable rocking chair of America's musical front porch. So many people donated violins, guitars, cellos, banjos, trumpets, and more. The response has been phenomenal.'
As the first-come, first-serve distribution day arrived, the team's stock of instruments had surpassed 1,600 in total. Then, in the days leading up to the event, an additional 200 instruments were donated, according to local coverage from WNC's Fiasco Media. That number only continued to climb thanks to additional donations gathered by young bluegrass up-and-comer Wyatt Ellis, who helped bring in more than 100 additional pieces of equipment. Following Sunday, the organizers announced that all of the donated gear had ultimately found a home.
The event served as Johnathon's third instrument drive, and while it was intended to help Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee residents in particular, no recipients were required to provide proof of residence or additional information.
Even months after Hurricane Helene has subsided, relief efforts in affected areas continue to be of incredible importance. Last year, a number of efforts from various artists aimed to provide funding for relief, including charity compilations and sizable donations from folks like Dolly Parton and Metallica. Kittie are commemorating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Spit with an EP of re-recorded songs, out September 19th on Sumerian Records. Titled Spit XXV, the four-song release sees the metal band revisiting highlight tracks from its first album alongside original producer Garth Richardson. The selections include 'Spit,' 'Do You Think I'm a Whore?,' 'Brackish,' and 'Charlotte,' with the title track available to stream now. While it's recognizably the same song, the Canadian quartet have given it a new coat of paint, updating the sonics and fidelity to 2025 standards. It's closer to the brutal sound of post-reunion Kittie, as heard on the comeback LP Fire that was released last year. 'It's hard to believe that 25 years after its release, and almost 30 years since Kittie began, people are still talking about Spit,' remarked singer-guitarist Morgan Lander in a press release. 'There is something truly unexplainable in why our debut album is still resonating with people, finding a new audience and has had such a lasting impact on so many.' She continued: 'Reimagining some of these classic songs for the 25th anniversary of Spit was a lot of fun and a true testament to their longevity. It reveals just how relevant in the musical landscape they still are today. We were honoured to work with Garth again where it all began after more than two decades, and doing so was a cool way to pay homage to the past while updating these songs with a modern sound, bringing them into the future.' Florence + the Machine has released 'Everybody Scream,' the title track and first single to their upcoming sixth album. 'Everybody Scream' is undoubtedly a darker turn from Florence + the Machine. Across an eerie trot, the song finds Florence Welch addressing the entity that takes over when she performs: 'Look at me run myself ragged/ Blood on the stage/ But how can I leave you when you're screaming my name?,' she sings in the first chorus. Her commands for everyone to scream, sing, and dance are echoed by a chilling choir throughout, and the song culminates in something of a spell. The song also arrives with a video directed by Autumn de Wilde, who also helmed each of the videos from Florence + the Machine's last album, 2022's Dance Fever. The video depicts a chaotic scene in a countryside, with frantic shots of people possessed by an unknown force, shaking uncontrollably, and — true to the song's title — screaming. IDLES' Mark Bowen also appears as one of the men possessed by Welch's (evil?) charm. Watch the official video below. Along with the release of the title track, Florence + the Machine have offered more details about the upcoming album. According to a press release, Welch was inspired by her recovery from a lifesaving surgery conducted during her 'Dance Fever' tour in 2022. She crafted the album over a two-year period with a close knit group of collaborators, including the aforementioned Bowen as well as Mitski and The National's Aaron Dessner. Welch also revealed some of the new album's inspirations, which include witchcraft, folk horror, mysticism, chaos, and more. In addition to posting a photo working with Bowen on the new album and wrote 'Swans vs. Adele' on a notebook, alluding to a more carnal, hybrid sound for Everybody Scream. Florence + the Machine's upcoming album Everybody Scream will arrive on October 31st. Pre-orders for the new album are ongoing via the band's website. Welch originally teased the album this month with a dramatic Instagram video featuring her frantically digging a whole and proceeding to scream directly into it.
