US Defense Secretary Hegseth Urges NATO Allies to Shoulder More Responsibility

Daily Tribune2 days ago

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth delivered a firm message to NATO allies on Thursday, emphasizing that the United States cannot be the sole pillar of the alliance's defense strategy in an increasingly volatile global environment.
Speaking at a high-level NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels, Hegseth called on member states to boost their defense spending to five percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) – a significant leap from the current two percent target.
'Our message is going to continue to be clear. It's deterrence and peace through strength, but it can't be reliance,' said Hegseth. 'It cannot and will not be reliance on America in a world of a lot of threats.'
The call comes amid growing security concerns in Europe and beyond, from ongoing conflicts to emerging threats in cyber and space domains. Hegseth's remarks underline Washington's push for greater burden-sharing within NATO, as U.S. leaders continue to stress the importance of a balanced alliance.
While several NATO members have increased defense budgets in recent years, the U.S. still shoulders a disproportionate share of the alliance's military spending. Hegseth's proposal marks a new benchmark that could reshape future NATO commitments, signaling Washington's intent to recalibrate its role within the bloc.
The Brussels meeting is expected to spark further debate over the financial and strategic responsibilities of member nations ahead of the NATO summit later this year.

US Refuses Air Cover For European 'Reassurance Force' In Postwar Ukraine

The British and French-led effort to establish a 'coalition of the willing' to stand up to Russia and defend Ukraine just hit another major roadblock, as Bloomberg is reporting Wednesday the US has effectively vetoed a plan to provide American air defenses to back a 'reassurance force' for postwar Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been insisting that US-backed air defenses are key to any future permanent settlement plans for ending the war. Western proposals for ending the war have all featured foreign-backed and monitored security guarantees for Ukraine. On this, Starmer had said back in February that 'There must be a US backstop' and that the 'US security guarantee is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again.' After Western billions already sunk into keeping Ukraine's military and civic infrastructure afloat, the UK and France are also seeking from President Trump pledges of future air power, and border surveillance and intelligence. The Europeans also envision a strong, permanent security bulwark backed by the United States along NATO's eastern flank. Yet, President Trump has repeatedly warned allies that if NATO countries don't pay their fair share they won't be protected. This despite European leaders as well as some US politicians expressing recent concern that the Atlantic alliance is becoming weaker than ever, and that Article 5 collective defense is in peril. Trump has lashed out at NATO countries for not even meeting their current two percent spending goal while the unfair burden has long fallen United States. 'We appreciate the work that the allies, particularly France and the United Kingdom together with Germany and others have undertaken to develop the coalition of the willing,' US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said at a press breifing Brussels on Wednesday. 'We are counting on all our European allies to continue taking the leadership position in contributing military resources and providing the political capital to make security guarantees a reality.' All of this comes as it was only on Tuesday that Dutch slapped down a proposal to increase defense spending to 3.5% of gross domestic product (GDP), key to NATO's capability targets, in a non-binding motion. US Is 'Major' Cause Of Ukraine War: Beijing Goes On Attack

China is pushing back hard against new Western criticisms of its foreign policy, as French President Emmanuel Macron and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth went on the attack, hurling sharp criticisms at Beijing during the ongoing Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, which noticeably China's Defense Minister Dong Jun chose to skip. A fresh, strident Chinese denunciation was formulated at the United Nations in New York. Beijing typically is very careful with its Ukraine war statements, seeking to present itself as an outside, neutral and objective mediator, urging peace. But now Chinese officials are blistering angry over the ramped-up anti-China messaging coming from Washington and Europe. The rhetoric is clearly getting less restrained on all sides, as increasingly hot spots in Eastern Europe get closely linked to Asian flashpoints. Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations blasted the United States for playing proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, saying Washington bears 'major responsibility' for the outbreak of the conflict. China's ambassador to UN further underscored that Beijing 'has never provided lethal weapons' to any side US should 'stop boring blame game' and instead focus on achieving peace. 'It is not conducive to achieving a cease-fire and ending the war, and runs counter to the common expectations of the international community,' he told the Security Council. French President Emmanuel Macron called on Indo-Pacific nations to establish a 'new coalition' to counter the 'constraints and side effects' stemming from the growing U.S.-China rivalry. –CNBC 'We urge all parties to actively forge an atmosphere conducive to peace talks by creating conditions and providing support. We also call on the parties to the conflict to work collectively toward de-escalation and a political solution, rather than persisting with military confrontations and attacks.' 'Just now, the US Representative, once again, spread misinformation and smeared China. This is utterly unacceptable,' said Geng, according to Xinhua. Hegseth's message in Asia was apparently coming through loud and clear via US representatives in New York on Friday. The Trump administration has of late held the threat of further sanctions over both Moscow and Beijing, given the export of 'dual-use' (military/industrial) Chinese items to Russia. The occasion of the Shangri-La Dialogue conference has only served to heighten tensions between the US and China globally, and in the Indo-Pacific region. Click here to read more…
