Lionesses captain Leah Williamson vows 'the best is yet to come' in Euros final against Spain after rollercoaster tournament
Leah Williamson has promised that 'the best is yet to come' from England as they prepare to face world champions Spain in Sunday night's European Championship final. The Lionesses have had a rocky run to the final, becoming the first team in Euros history to reach both the quarter-finals and semi-finals after conceding the opening goal in each match. They now have the chance to set the record straight, seeking revenge for their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final two years ago. 'The opportunity of what's on offer is the best thing in football,' said Williamson. 'We don't necessarily carry the weight of how much it means to people, but we're aware of it because it means the same to us. 'You grow in a tournament and we're aware of that. We have to stay in it as long as possible until we take advantage of it and hopefully the saying is true, that 'the best is yet to come.'' Williamson, who refused to label England as underdogs despite their defeat two years ago, insisted her side will play without fear. The Lionesses have endured a rocky run to the final, becoming the first team in Euros history to reach it after coming from behind in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals 'I don't think we're a team fearful of losing. In football anything can happen and there's so much out of your control so we focus on being the best people we can to each other, performing the best that we can and hopefully that gives the result that we want.' All 23 players trained today, including injury doubt Lauren James. England manager Sarina Wiegman confirmed that if James recovers well, she will be available.

Arne Slot leaves Luis Diaz out of AC Milan friendly due to ongoing speculation
Bayern Munich are understood to have reopened dialogue with the Premier League champions, having had an initial offer of 67.5million euros (£59m) dismissed last week. Liverpool have maintained they do not want to sell the forward – who has also attracted interest from Barcelona – and the Bundesliga champions' bid was way below their own valuation of 100m euro (£87m) for an elite forward in the global market. Diaz turns 29 in January and has two years left on his current deal but has not yet had an offer of a new contract. 'In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that,' said Slot. 'He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. 'I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that.' Joe Gomez has departed Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia due to injury, Arne Slot has confirmed. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 26, 2025 Asked whether Diaz wanted to leave, Slot added: 'That is not the person to ask, me.' Striker Darwin Nunez, whose own future appears to lie away from Anfield, and midfielder Wataru Endo missed the game with minor fitness issues. Club-record signing Florian Wirtz made his first start as a false nine, with latest signing Hugo Ekitike left out of the squad, having only arrived on Thursday after completing his arrival in a £79m deal on Wednesday. Slot played two different starting XIs in each half, with midfielder Ryan Gravenberch and left-back Kostas Tsimikas both required to fill a centre-back role after Joe Gomez returned home for treatment on an Achilles injury. 'We thought it was better to assess it back in England and for him to work on him to come back to the team, probably in more ideal circumstances for him,' added Slot, who denied Gomez's absence left him dangerously-short in the position after selling Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. 'I don't think we have a concern at centre-back. I think Ryan (Gravenberch) showed today that he can play in that position. He did it last season as well. 'Although we all know we favour him as a number six, Wata (Endo) can play there. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury, he has been good for us last season as well. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 26, 2025 'We have enough options left but it's true that Jarell Quansah left and we haven't replaced him yet.' Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo scored the goals for Liverpool, who paid tribute to forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva after their deaths in a car crash earlier this month. Players wore shirts bearing a logo with the Portugal international's name and number and a heart, and Sir Kenny Dalglish laid a wreath in front of supporters who held up a DJ 20 mosaic.

Everton make surprise £31m offer for Chelsea and Liverpool transfer target
Everton have reportedly made a surprise offer worth €36m (£31.5m) plus add-ons to sign Chelsea and Liverpool transfer target Malick Fofana. The Toffees could reach an agreement with French club Lyon 'fairly quickly' in a stunning transfer twist, French outlet L'Equipe reported on Saturday. Everton and Lyon are currently in club-to-club talks while David Moyes' side are also discussing personal terms with Fofana ahead of a possible move. Liverpool and Chelsea were both linked with a deal for the 20-year-old winger earlier in the summer transfer window. Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Fulham had also expressed an interest in Fofana while Bayern Munich, Napoli and RB Leipzig were keen on him too. Chelsea had even made a verbal enquiry for the Belgium international – but it appears he could be heading to Everton instead. Fofana has played a total of 64 games for Lyon to date, conjuring up 15 goals and seven assists for the Ligue 1 side. The Belgian helped Lyon reach the Coupe de France final in 2024 and has established himself as one of the brightest young talents across Europe. Fofana joined Lyon from Gent in January 2024, with the French club paying a fee of €17 million plus €5 million in add-ons to sign the player. It's thought that Lyon want to secure at least €40m (£35m) in fixed terms to allow Fofana to join Everton. Everton are keen to wrap up the deal as soon as possible due to the interest from other Premier League teams. Fofana could become Everton's third summer signing after deals for Villarreal forward Thierno Barry and AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers. Carlos Alcaraz has also joined Everton on a permanent deal after a spell on loan from Flamengo last season. More Trending Everton are not done there, though, with the Merseyside club progressing in a move to sign Bayern Munich defender Adam Aznou too. The Toffees are set for a new era in the 2025-26 campaign after moving into their brand new Hill Dickinson Stadium. Everton face a trip to promoted side Leeds United on August 18 in their opening game of the upcoming Premier League season.
