India test-fires Agni-5 missile capable of striking any part of China

Malay Mail10 hours ago
NEW DELHI, Aug 21 — India said yesterday it had successfully test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile which, when operational, should be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to any part of China.
The Agni-5 missile was successfully launched in India's eastern Odisha state, with authorities saying it 'validated all operational and technical parameters.'
India and China, the world's two most populous nations, are intense rivals competing for influence across South Asia and relations plummeted in 2020 after a deadly border clash.
India is also part of the Quad security alliance with the United States, Australia and Japan, which is seen as a counter to China.
India's bitter rival Pakistan has nuclear weapons as well and the two countries came to close to war in May after militants killed 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir, an attack New Delhi blamed on Islamabad. But Pakistan denied any involvement.
Caught in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff war, Delhi and Beijing have moved to mend ties.
Last October, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the first time in five years at a summit in Russia.
Modi is expected to make his first visit to China since 2018 later this month to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) -- a regional security bloc.
Ties between New Delhi and Washington, meanwhile, have been strained by Trump's ultimatum that India end its purchases of Russian oil, a key source of revenue for Moscow as it wages its military offensive in Ukraine.
The United States says it will double new import tariffs on India from 25 percent to 50 percent by August 27 if New Delhi does not switch crude suppliers.

Russia unleashes biggest August barrage on Ukraine, killing one and wounding 18

KYIV, Aug 21 — Russian overnight attack killed one person, injured at least 18, and struck a US electronics manufacturer in western Ukraine, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday. A missile attack injured 15 people and destroyed storage facilities at the manufacturer in the town of Mukachevo, emergency services and local authorities in the western Zakarpattia region said. National television showed the region's governor Myroslav Biletskyi, standing near the building engulfed in smoke, who said the plant was producing consumer electronics, while Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strike in a post on X. 'A fully civilian facility that has nothing to do with defence or the military,' he said. 'This is not the first Russian attack on American businesses in Ukraine, after strikes on Boeing offices in Kyiv earlier this year and other attacks.' In the western city of Lviv, the attack killed one person, injured three more, and damaged 26 homes, according to Governor Maksym Kozytskyi. Ukrainian Air Force said that Russia used 574 drones and 40 missiles in the overnight attack on the country, which was the biggest one so far in August. 'This is why efforts to force Russia to end the war are so critical,' Sybiha said. The strike took place at a time of intense efforts by US President Donald Trump to bring an end to the Russian war in Ukraine. Russia, which denies targeting civilians, has used missiles and drones to strike Ukrainian towns and cities far from the front lines of the war. Thousands of civilians, the vast majority of them Ukrainian, have been killed since Moscow invaded in 2022. — Reuters

Taiwan plans defence budget increase to over 3% of GDP

TAIPEI: Taiwan's government plans to increase its 2026 defence budget to more than three percent of GDP, the premier said Thursday, as it faces US pressure to invest more in its own protection. Taipei has ramped up investment in military equipment and weapons over the past decade in response to intensifying pressure from China, which claims the democratic island as part of its territory and has threatened to seize it by force. Premier Cho Jung-tai said the latest hike was 'another concrete demonstration to the world and the people of Taiwan of our resolve and ability to safeguard national sovereignty and security'. The proposed spending needs to be approved by the opposition-controlled parliament before it can take effect. Taiwan's cabinet has allocated NT$949.5 billion (US$31.1 billion), or 3.32 percent of GDP, for defence spending next year, the government's budget documents show. 'Our total defence budget is calculated using NATO's model and standards, including the budget for... the coast guard,' Cho told reporters. Cho gave the figure 3.23 percent during the news conference but the cabinet later confirmed to AFP that 3.32 percent is the correct number. Cho said overall expenditure for 2026 was budgeted at just over NT$3 trillion -- up NT$110 billion or around 3.8 percent from 2025. President Lai Ching-te has previously vowed to increase defence spending to more than three percent of GDP as Washington pressured the island and other governments around the world to spend more on their own security. The announcement comes as Taipei seeks to strike an agreement with US President Donald Trump's administration for a lower tariff on Taiwanese shipments to the United States. Earlier this month, Trump imposed a temporary 20 percent tariff on Taiwan's imports as part of his global trade war. The two sides are still trying to reach an agreement. The China-friendly Kuomintang party which controls the island's legislature with the help of the Taiwan People's Party, slashed the Lai government's 2025 budget. It had planned to increase defence spending to a record NT$647 billion, or around 2.5 percent of GDP. However, some items were cut or frozen. The KMT has defended the reductions, saying the party was seeking to stop wasteful spending. Trump has previously suggested Taiwan should pay the United States for its protection and accused the island of stealing the US semiconductor industry. While Taiwan has a homegrown defence industry and has been upgrading its equipment, it would be outgunned in a conflict with China and relies heavily on US arms sales to bolster its security capabilities.
