Breaking Former swimming coach George Gibney arrested in US

The former Irish national swimming coach George Gibney has been arrested in the United States. Mr Gibney, who is now in his 70s, is wanted in Ireland to face over 50 historical sexual abuse charges. He was arrested in Florida this afternoon by US Marshalls on foot of an Irish extradition warrant. He is being detained pending a court appearance there and can decide whether to accede or contest his extradition. Gardaí reopened their investigation into the former swimming coach after a number of people made allegations against him on a BBC podcast over five years ago. A specialist team within the Garda National Protective Services Bureau commenced the criminal investigation in 2020 and a file was sent to the DPP three years later. The Sexual Crime Management Unit within the Garda Protective Services Bureau, which specialises in investigating difficult, historic and high-profile cases of sexual abuse, conducted the investigation. The DPP examined the file and subsequently recommended that Gibney be charged with more than 50 alleged offences. Gardaí then secured an extradition warrant in the High Court seeking Mr Gibney's extradition and have been working with the US authorities for over six months.

Organised by Donaghadee resident Joanne Courney and councillor Mark Brooks, the GoFundMe page for Sarah Montgomery's family has raised more than £18,000. Detectives had been granted a court extension of a further 36 hours to question the suspect. On Monday, the force said a 42-year-old woman had also been arrested in Belfast on suspicion of assisting an offender. Earlier today police said she had been released unconditionally. Police said both suspects were known to the victim and they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident. This week, the Assembly heard was told Ms Montgomery is the 27th adult woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2020. ADVERTISEMENT In a joint statement, Revd Ian R Gamble and Revd Kathy Couchman of Donaghadee Parish Church said the parish had a strong connection to Ms Montgomery and her family. 'The clergy and congregation of Donaghadee Parish Church are deeply saddened by the death of Ms Sarah Montgomery,' it read. "Our Parish has a strong connection to her family and one of her children was baptised in our congregation. We offer to her family our condolences, prayers, love and support over these difficult days. 'It was always a joy to see Sarah at church events, especially at our Mums & Tots group. "She was a familiar and friendly part of our local community, a young mum who would stand with other mums at the gate of Donaghadee Primary School at pick up time, a school which she herself had attended.' The statement added: 'The tragic nature of Sarah's death, compounded with the loss of her unborn child, can only add to the immense sense of grief that her family and friends will be feeling. 'Sarah was a very loving daughter to her late parents, a caring and devoted mother to her own children and a great support to her brothers and elderly grandparents. 'May God grant to Sarah's family, close friends and our Donaghadee community his unfailing love.'
