French prosecutors demand Fiat face trial in diesel scandal
It is the fourth trial demanded in France against major car makers after cases against Volkswagen and the French companies Peugeot-Citroen and Renault.
A source close to the case who asked not to be named told AFP on Wednesday that the Paris prosecutors' office made the demand on June 30 accusing Fiat of aggravated fraud.
The source said the Italian company is accused of selling Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Jeep vehicles fitted with diesel engines that 'frequently exceeded the regulatory threshold for nitrogen oxide emissions', highly dangerous to humans, between 2014 and 2017.
The scandal has caused waves in the global car industry since September 2015, when Volkswagen admitted tampering with millions of diesel vehicles to dupe pollution tests.
A German court in May convicted and handed prison sentences, some suspended, to four former Volkswagen managers over their part in scandal.
Filing their case against Volkswagen in February, French prosecutors said nearly one million French customers had to pay for servicing and repairs after the emissions breach was revealed. AFP

France favourites but Germany have the will, says coach Wueck
BERN - Germany's group stage at the Women's Euro may not have gone to plan but the eight-time winners have put all the setbacks behind them as they get ready to face France in the quarter-finals, coach Christian Wueck said on Friday. Germany were thrashed 4-1 by Sweden and had defender Carlotta Wamser sent off in their final Group C game in a sub-par performance that saw them finish second in the standings. That set up a blockbuster clash between Germany and France, who Wueck considers as favourites for Saturday's showdown in Basel. "If you look at the raw numbers, the French won nine points in the group stage, we won six, that's why I think the French are the favourites," Wueck told reporters. The Germans have had five days to get over the unexpected defeat by the Swedes, who are heading home before the Germans after losing their quarter-final 3-2 on penalties to England on Thursday. "It's incredibly important that the disappointment from that (group) game against Sweden is now gone," Wueck said. "I think we've managed to ensure that we're not just looking forward to this quarter-final, but that we're approaching this knockout phase in such a way that it's now really clear to us that the performance on the pitch will decide whether we stay in the tournament or not." "I know that the euphoria and the will to go into this game is definitely there now. That's why it was good ... that we had so much time to process the match against Sweden," Wueck said. REUTERS

Germany's Merz casts doubt on Ukraine EU entry by 2034
BERLIN - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday cast doubt on the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union by 2034, saying accession was unlikely to come at a point affecting the bloc's medium-term finance plans, which run to 2034. "For us, the absolute top priority is, first and foremost, to do everything possible to end this war," Merz said on Friday after a meeting with Romanian President Nicușor Dan in Berlin. "Then we'll talk about the reconstruction of Ukraine... but that's going to take a number of years ... It will probably not even affect the EU's current medium-term financial outlook," the chancellor said. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in Kyiv in February that Ukraine could join the EU before 2030 if the country continues reforms at the current speed and quality. EU leaders have also said accession to the EU would be the most important security guarantee for the future of Ukraine. REUTERS
