The Batman 2 Update Reveals Production Start Date for DC Sequel Movie
Fans have been anxiously awaiting the sequel to Matt Reeves' The Batman ever since the first movie was released in United States theaters in 2022. Starring Robert Pattinson as the titular Dark Knight, the film was a massive hit and grossed around $772.3 million at the global box office. It also kicked off Reeves' The Batman Epic Crime Saga, which continued in 2024's The Penguin with Colin Farrell.
It's been known that The Batman 2 is in the works for a while, now; however, it wasn't until just recently that Reeves and Mattson Tomlin turned in their script for the movie. Plot details remain heavily under wraps at this point in time.
What is the update on The Batman 2?
According to ProductionList.com, via ComicBookMovie, The Batman 2 — also known as The Batman Part II or The Batman Part 2 — will begin production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London, United Kingdom, on January 1, 2026.
'Pre‑production is ramping up in London, the posting on ProductionList.com reads. 'Production leads are organizing departments and hiring for production design, art direction, stunt coordination, costume, makeup, grip, lighting, camera, VFX, and post-production planning. Leavesden offers access to high-end soundstages and set-building facilities—ideal for Gotham's gritty transformation and sweeping practical environments.
'The sequel explores Gotham's slow recovery from the devastating flood caused by the Riddler in the previous film, tackling themes of societal division, power dynamics, and moral ambiguity. Reeves has described Batman's new journey as operating in a more complex and 'greyer' world — raising the stakes for character-driven tension and visual storytelling.'
Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman in the movie, while the website lists the returning cast as Farrell, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. It also says Barry Keoghan is 'expected' to return as the Joker, though this has not been confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures as of yet.
The Batman 2 arrives on October 1, 2027.

It's been nearly 40 years since The Goonies first hit theaters and became an iconic piece of pop culture. Over the decades, talk of a sequel has never completely died down, but earlier this year it started to feel more real than ever. Warner Bros. reportedly hired a writer to bring Goonies 2 to life with Steven Spielberg producing. Fans have been excited about the possibility, and many of the original cast members seem ready to return. But there's one major cast member who isn't exactly jumping for joy at the Brolin. Brolin, who famously played Brand Walsh in the 1985 adventure classic, has since gone on to star in massive hits like No Country for Old Men , True Grit , Avengers: Endgame , Dune , and Deadpool 2 . During a recent interview with io9 for his upcoming film Weapons , the actor was asked about the status of Goonies 2 and whether he'd be interested in coming back. His answer? Pretty hesitant. 'I would [have trepidations],' Brolin admitted when asked if he'd return to play Brand. When pressed on why he feels that way, he explained: 'Because I love The Goonies , [but] it's been 41 years. Let it lay. I mean, no, I love the idea, but I don't know. If they made one with different kids, then it becomes a different thing, and I think it taints the original one. 'I think people get excited, and people who were in the original movie, they get excited about being able to work with that group again because it was such an amazing experience. So do I think it should be done? I don't know, man. I love it just standing like it does.' That's a pretty strong statement, and it sounds like if Goonies 2 does happen, it might have to do so without Brolin. That could work as Brand was always a bit on his own path in the original film, so the story could easily explain his absence. Then again, the sequel could go in a completely different direction with a new group of kids and another mystery tied to One-Eyed Willy. But Brolin's perspective makes sense. Forty years is a long time, and sometimes it's better to let a classic remain untouched. Whether Warner Bros. agrees with him, or whether fans even want a Goonies 2 without the full original cast, remains to be seen.
