Zoe Saldana slammed for calling her Emilia Perez Oscar ‘gender fluid'

Daily Mail15 hours ago

Zoe Saldana has been criticized after she referred to the Academy Award she won for her role in Emilia Prez 'gender fluid'.
The actress played Rita Mora Castro - a Mexican lawyer tasked with helping a cartel boss transition into a woman, and recently spoke with People about winning her first ever Academy Award for the role.
In speaking about her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, she mentioned that she keeps the statue in her office and that it was 'gender fluid.'

She then went on to say that the award was 'trans' and goes by 'they/them.'
But the admission did not go over well with the general public.
Although Emilia Pérez won several awards, the movie - which features other actors including trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon and Selena Gomez - was met with massive controversy.
On one hand, members of the LGBTQ community were upset at the movie's 'retrograde' portrayal of a trans woman.
Others took issue with the representation of Mexican culture in the film, which featured an oversimplified take on drug violence in the nation, as well as a mixture of inaccurate accents and dialects.
And then, some of Gascon's old tweets were resurfaced, which featured racist and discriminatory views against Muslims, China, and George Floyd - for which she later apologized.
On top of all of this controversy laid critic's biggest issue: Not once during any award speech or discussion about the film did any of the actors involved mention the issues that plague trans people in their communities.
So Saldaña saying months later that her Oscar award was 'trans,' caused a rehashing of the uproar the film faced when it first came out.
'We have Latinos/Hispanics fighting for their rights at this moment and this woman and the whole cast of Emilia Perez have been silent about their support to the community they profited from, clear as water they only cared for the award,' one X (formerly Twitter) user shared, referencing the ongoing protests taking place against ICE.
Another user brought attention to how much the act felt like an afterthought.
'Yet she could barely speak about trans rights during her acceptance speeches,' they said.
Others mirrored the same sentiment, with one user saying, 'She's so nasty where was this energy making the movie or during the awards campaign lol.'
Some users clapped back at the choice to call her award trans.
'She's calling her Oscar… trans????' one user questioned.
And finally, some users were just upset to have to see anything about the film on their timelines again.
'I thought I wouldn't have to hear about this movie again,' another X user shared.
While Emilia Pérez itself may be in the best, it's no telling what its cast might say in the future to bring it back into the headlines.

Fans threaten to boycott MLB over 'disgusting' Pride stunt during national anthem at New York Mets game

The New York Mets left baseball fans furious on Friday night after showing a Pride flag on their big screen during a rendition of the US national anthem. Prior to their game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Mets controversially displayed the LGBTQ + symbol instead of the American flag as the Star Spangled Banner played out at Citi Field. Despite a number of teams getting involved in the annual 'Pride Month' tradition in recent weeks, fans are threatening to boycott MLB over the divisive stunt that took place in New York. One user posted on X along with a video of the Pride flag being shown at Citi Field during the anthem: 'The Mets showed a pride flag instead of the American flag during our National Anthem. Boycott the MLB.' 'That's disgusting, @Mets,' said another. 'Think the @mlb is looking to be boycotted,' wrote a third. A fourth put: 'F***ing Disgrace!!!' The Mets showed a pride flag instead of the American flag during our National Anthem. While another simply put: 'Shameful'. has contacted the New York Mets for comment. MLB teams traditionally hold Pride-themed events in June, with the Boston Red Sox also sparking controversy by staging a pre-game drag show earlier this week. Los Angeles Dodgers players also wore baseball caps with colors of the Pride flag mixed into the team's logo on Saturday, although pitcher Clayton Kershaw made a slight tweak to his hat. Kershaw, who is a devout Christian, inscribed next to the LGBTQ+-inspired logo 'Gen 9:12-16' - which is a passage from the Bible that claims the rainbow was not created by God to represent that demographic. Instead, the passage reads: 'And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth."' That extract from the Bible, which comes just after the story of Noah and his family surviving a worldwide flood on an arc, suggests the rainbow is actually the sign of a covenant God made to never destroy the earth with a flood again. Kershaw's religious statement has gone viral on social media, with a number of users of the same faith commending him for reminding people of the rainbow's meaning. The Boston Red Sox sparked controversy by putting on a pregame drag show earlier this week One wrote: 'Classy move by Kershaw. The rainbow he supports has nothing to do with pride month.' 'Courage to stand up for truth,' said another. While another fan put: 'That's a clever counter!' Others, however, were critical of the baseball player for doctoring a hat designed to raise awareness for equality. 'The rainbow can have multiple meanings,' one argued. 'Why cant the rainbow mean both?' 'What a disappointment,' concluded another.

Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw writes controversial message on Pride-themed hat

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has sparked controversy after writing a religious message on his Pride-themed hat during their game on Saturday. As they hosted the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium, LA stars wore special baseball caps that had the colors of the Pride flag mixed into the team's logo as part of an LGBTQ + initiative. Yet Kershaw, who is a devout Christian, decided to make a slight tweak to his hat despite not actually featuring in the game. The 37-year-old inscribed next to the LGBTQ+-inspired logo 'Gen 9:12-16' - which is a passage from the Bible that claims the rainbow was not created by God to represent that demographic. One wrote: 'Classy move by Kershaw. While one simply posted: 'he should stick to sports'. Kershaw, whose wife Ellen shares his Christian faith, has previously taken issue with the Dodgers for promoting a prominent LGBTQ+ charity which he accused of mocking Christianity. The MLB franchise controversially hosted the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at their annual Pride Night back in 2023 despite the group, who frequently dress in drag, typically wearing nun habits. Due to Kershaw's unhappiness with the promotion of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Dodgers moved their Christian Faith and Family Day forward to an earlier date. 'I think we were always going to do Christian Faith Day this year, but I think the timing of our announcement was sped up,' he said at the time. 'Picking a date and doing those different things was part of it as well.

Having kept their blossoming romance largely under wraps for months after they were spotted flirting in September 2024, the couple went Instagram official in March of this year. Celebrating the footballer's birthday, Georgia gushed about Harry as they marked the big day with a trip to their favourite spa. 'We love you so much,' the 27-year-old wrote. Georgia gave her post a simple caption which read: 'Summer mode' Having kept their relationship under wraps for months, Georgia and Ipswich Town player Harry went Instagram official in March on his birthday Last month Harry and Georgia were in attendance as fellow Love Islander Dani Dyer, 28, and her England star boyfriend Jarrod Bowen, 28, tied the knot. Georgia and Dani - daughter of actor Danny Dyer - appeared on Love Island together in 2018 and have remained friends ever since. But on Dani's big day, Georgia was slammed by fans for wearing a white dress. The reality star had shared a stunning clip of herself on the morning of the wedding to TikTok, showing her wearing a pale yellow lace Miss Circle dress which featured a long skirt and a layered square neckline. Adding inches to her statuesque frame, Georgia finished her look with a pair of white Christian Louboutin heels and a white clutch. But when she shared the clip to her social media, captioned 'wedding season', her fans fled to the comments to criticise her as they thought her dress looked too close to 'white'. Georgia's choice of outfit did not however take away from Dani and Jarrod's special day, where they tied the knot with a lavish 'Bridgerton-themed' wedding One penned: 'Looks a bit too close to white'; 'No. It's white what's wrong with you?'. 'Of course you can would wear white to a wedding'; 'Wasn't chosen to be a bridesmaid so thought she would be the bride instead?'; 'wearing white to a wedding?!??!?!'. Georgia's choice of outfit did not however take away from Dani and Jarrod's special day, where they tied the knot with a lavish 'Bridgerton-themed' wedding. The bride stunned in an elegant off-the-shoulder designer gown for the occasion, with the bridge and groom joined by 50 of their closest friends and relatives
