Sambit Patra In Manipur, Visit Sparks Hope Of Government Formation
The BJP's northeast in-charge Sambit Patra has reached Manipur and after a series of meetings, invited BJP MLAs for a meeting at the City hotel, sparking speculations of fresh efforts of government formation, sources said. But neither Mr Patra, nor any leader of the BJP have commented on this. The visit has sparked speculation of government formation in the state, which has been under President's Rule.
There is a growing demand for a popular government in the state and recently 21 BJP MLAS has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the request.
Mr Patra went to Churachandpur and later, met former Chief Minister N Biren Singh at his residence at Luwangsangbam. His last stop was the home of the Speaker Th Satyabrata.
In Churachandpur, Mr Patra, who is also the BJP national spokesperson and state in-charge, visited Vungzagin Valte - the MLA from Thanlon who survived a mob attack in May 2023.
He was seen shaking hands with the wheelchair-bound MLA Vungzagin Valte. Churachandpur MLA LM Khaute and student leaders like the Zomi Students Federation were also present at the occasion.
Sources said he is having a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Kuki Zo Council (KZC) and the Zomi Council (ZC).
On February 13, the Centre had imposed President's rule in the violence-hit state after chief minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been placed under suspended animation.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kuki tribes in Manipur since May 2023.

INDIA bloc meet next week to pick joint Vice President nominee
NEW DELHI: The INDIA bloc leaders will meet early next week to discuss the Vice Presidential candidate. According to leaders aware of the matter, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to call a meeting of floor leaders of Opposition parties early next week probably August 18 or 19 to discuss the name of a 'joint candidate for the bloc. Sources said that Kharge has been holding backchannel talks with leaders of parties for a consensus candidate. As per the Election Commission notification, candidates can file their nominations by 21st of August while the scrutiny of the nominations will take place on the 22nd August, The last date of the withdrawal of candidature will be 25th of this month. The counting of the votes will be held on 9th September. At the INDIA bloc meeting last week hosted by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the parties have decided to contest the vice presidential poll after a collective decision on a common candidate. They have also decided to wait for the NDA to announce their candidate leaders felt that the numbers are not overwhelmingly stacked against the opposition despite the BJP-led NDA having a majority. They said that there is a feeling that the opposition parties should not shy away from a contest to send a strong political message irrespective of the outcome. In a sudden move, Jagdeep Dhankhar quit as vice president on Monday evening citing medical reasons, though there have been consistent murmurs about other reasons behind his resignation. The effective strength of both the Houses together is 782 and the winning candidate will require to win 392 votes in the election for the vice president, considering all eligible voters exercise their franchise. All members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including the nominated ones, vote in the vice presidential poll. In Lok Sabha, while the BJP-led NDA enjoys the support of 293 members in the 542-member House, the INDIA bloc has 234 members. The ruling alliance has the support of about 130 members in Rajya Sabha that has an effective strength of 240, assuming that the nominated members vote in support of the NDA nominee.

Cong overhauls MP units, removes 68 district chiefs
Congress BHOPAL: Congress removed Saturday 68 district presidents in Madhya Pradesh, appointing 71 new chiefs that include six sitting MLAs and eight former legislators. The overhaul is part of Rahul Gandhi's Sangathan Srajan Abhiyan (organisational rejuvenation campaign), launched two-and-a-half months ago in the state. Raghogarh MLA Jaivardhan Singh, son of former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, has been named district president for Guna, while Digvijaya's nephew Priyavrat Singh takes charge in Rajgarh. Only three incumbent district chiefs have retained their posts. All three are considered close to state Congress chief Jitu Patwari. Patwari said the appointments would strengthen the party against BJP, describing district chiefs as the "backbone of the organisation". He said: "Under the guidance of Congress top leadership, the organisation rejuvenation campaign has now reached the stage of responsibilities within the party." Congress claimed 70% of the new chiefs have experience in Youth Congress, NSUI or Seva Dal, with the team's average age between 45 and 50.
