Dorset Police catch newly passed driver speeding at 153mph
A newly-passed driver caught speeding at more than 150mph has received a suspended jail sentence. Daniel Groome passed his driving test three weeks before Dorset Police found him speeding along the A338 dual carriageway near Ringwood in June 2024.A Dorset Police officer reached speeds of 153mph to catch the 23-year-old, of Winston Road, Bournemouth, who had a front-seat passenger in his BMW 325i coupe.He was charged with dangerous driving and sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court.
A police statement explained an officer had been monitoring traffic at the Ashley Heath roundabout when he spotted the BMW driving at an "inappropriate speed while navigating a left-hand bend" at around 23:40 GMT.The road policing officer then "proactively responded in two seconds".They maintained a safe distance, but matched the speed of Groome in the BMW, recording a reading of 153mph on the police vehicle's calibrated speedometer.As Groome approached a 50mph speed limit at Blackwater, the force said he was travelling at almost double the speed limit."The distance between Ashley Heath and Blackwater is 5.2m (8.3km), which takes around five minutes to travel at a safe speed", the force explained. Groome travelled between the two locations in half that time and was subsequently charged.
'Not acceptable'
During a court hearing on 21 February, he received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.He was also disqualified from driving for two years and six months, given a four-month curfew and instructed to take an extended re-test.PC Kier Dagnall said: "We were very quickly able to respond and stop this vehicle from being involved in a collision and the driver potentially injuring themselves, their front-seat passenger or another road user."This driver had only passed his driving test three weeks beforehand and was travelling at incredibly dangerous speeds with someone else in his vehicle."We know some young, newly qualified drivers can be drawn into travelling at dangerous speeds and testing their capabilities, but this is not acceptable."

Animal cruelty is a criminal offence in the Northern Territory and can attract a maximum penalty of two years in prison or a fine of $37,000. It includes 'beating, abusing, torturing, injuring' and 'wounding' an animal. Aggravated animal cruelty, where the act results in the death or serious injury of an animal, can attract a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment or $92,500 fine. A Department of Agriculture and Fisheries spokesperson confirmed its Animal Welfare Branch was investigating the incident. The latest video follows several kangaroo cruelty incidents across Australia. NSW man Michael Holmes was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after allegedly tying a live kangaroo to the back of his car and driving some 400m in April. Holmes is expected to fight the charges when his case resumes in July after his lawyer entered not guilty pleas at Queanbeyan Local Court last month. Separately, a 64-year-old man pleaded guilty to four charges of aggravated cruelty relating to the killing of 71 kangaroos on his Victorian property in 2021. He was handed a $80,000 fine plus costs on Thursday after the judge found he had exceeded the conditions of his Authority to Control Wildlife.

Rapper Silento sentenced to 30 years for shooting cousin to death
The 27-year-old, known for his hit song, Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae), pleaded guilty but mentally ill on Wednesday to voluntary manslaughter and other charges in the shooting of his 34-year-old cousin. Silento, whose legal name is Ricky Lamar Hawk, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, DeKalb County district attorney Sherry Boston said in a statement. Hawk also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, possessing a gun while committing a crime and concealing the death of another. A murder charge was dropped as part of the plea agreement. DeKalb County police found Frederick Rooks III shot in the leg and face in the early morning hours of January 21 2021 outside a home in a suburban area near Decatur. Police said they found 10 bullet casings near Mr Rooks' body, and security video from a nearby home showed a white BMW SUV speeding away shortly after the gunshots. A family member of Mr Rooks told police that Silento had picked up his cousin in a white BMW SUV, and GPS data and other cameras put the vehicle at the site of the shooting. Silento confessed about 10 days later after he was arrested, police said. Ballistics testing matched the bullet casings to a gun that Silento had when he was arrested, authorities said. Mr Rooks' brothers and sisters told DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Courtney L Johnson before sentencing that Silento should have received a longer sentence, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The rapper was a high school junior in suburban Atlanta in 2015 when he released Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) and watched it skyrocket into a dance craze. Silento made multiple other albums, but said in an interview with the medical talk show, The Doctors, in 2019, that he struggled with depression and had grown up in a family where he witnessed mental illness and violence. 'I've been fighting demons my whole life, my whole life,' he said in 2019. 'Depression doesn't leave you when you become famous, it just adds more pressure,' Silento said then, urging others to get help. 'And while everybody's looking at you, they're also judging you.' 'I don't know if I can truly be happy, I don't know if these demons will ever go away.' Silento had been struggling in the months before the arrest. His publicist, Chanel Hudson, has said he had tried to kill himself in 2020. In August 2020, Silento was arrested in Santa Ana, California, on a domestic violence charge. The next day, the Los Angeles Police Department charged him with assault with a deadly weapon after witnesses said he entered a home where he did not know anyone looking for his girlfriend and swung a hatchet at two people before he was disarmed. In October 2020, Silento was arrested after police said they clocked him driving at 143 miles per hour on Interstate 85 in DeKalb County.
