Missing woman killed by ex-lover at work and wheeled away in bin, court told
Cleaner Yajaira Castro Mendez, 46, had allegedly previously been in a relationship with married Juan Francisco Toledo, who is accused of her murder.
She was reported missing to the Metropolitan Police on May 31, having left her home in Ilford, east London, on the morning of May 29.
Following a police search, her body was found in the Bolderwood area of Hampshire on Saturday.
At a hearing on Tuesday, prosecutor Caroline Carberry KC alleged that Toledo had killed the Colombian national on the evening of May 29 at an office where they were working in central London's legal district.
She told the court: 'The defendant was Ms Mendez's work colleague. They were both cleaning staff at an office building on Grays Inn Road and they had been in recent history in a relationship and on the day of her death they were both at work.'
Ms Mendez arrived for work at 5pm and was fatally injured inside the office block, it was alleged.
Mr Carberry claimed that just after 8.30pm, her body was removed from the office in a wheelie bin.
The defendant allegedly then placed the body in his car and drove to Hampshire where the body was dumped.
Ms Mendez's former flatmate had raised the alarm after she failed to move into new accommodation, the court was told.
A post-mortem examination to determine the cause of her death was ongoing in Winchester.
Venezuelan national Toledo, 51, of Crystal Palace, south London, was arrested on June 4 and subsequently charged with murder.
On Tuesday, the defendant appeared at the Old Bailey before Judge Mark Lucraft KC for a preliminary hearing.
A plea hearing was set for September 1 with a provisional trial from April 20 2026.
The defendant, who was assisted by a Spanish interpreter, was remanded into custody.
Ms Mendez's disappearance was initially treated as a missing person investigation led by local officers but the investigation was transferred to the Met's Specialist Crime Command on June 5, after a range of extensive further inquiries suggested she had come to harm.

Shock moment ‘jewellery thief' is taken down & put in a ‘lion killer' chokehold by black belt tourists in hols hotspot
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THIS is the astonishing moment a "jewellery thief" is wrestled to the ground and held in a "lion killer" chokehold by tourists. Brazilian brothers Gabriel and Gustavo Galindo sprung into action after hearing screams from a man claiming he had been robbed. When police arrived 10 minutes later to escort the man away, applause and cheers erupted for the two brothers. Shocking footage shows the man pinned to the ground as he attempts to wriggle out of the stranglehold. According to Brazilian news, the alleged thief tried to bite Gabriel before being warned to "stay still" or leave without an arm. Gabriel said: "I put him on the ground to show him Brazilian jiu-jitsu. 'By then, there was already a crowd of people enraged with anger towards the unfortunate man. "Some angry people started to beat him up, but I didn't have the heart to let them hurt him too badly.' "We stopped the robbery, taught the thief a lesson, and kept everyone safe." Posting the video online, Gabriel quipped: 'Enjoying ourselves in Barcelona.' The clip has massed thousands of views, with hundreds congratulating the holidaygoers for their efforts. Thief tackled & put in chokehold by tourist after 'trying to steal camera' One user hailed the lads "champions" while another crowned them modern day superheroes. The pair, who were in Barcelona, Spain on a European tour with their family at the time, later said they were left with a "good story to tell". Gabriel said: "And we went back to enjoying our day in Barcelona—with a great story to tell.' Barcelona is notorious for its rampant thieves who target unsuspecting tourists. Just a couple months ago, extraordinary footage emerged of another tourist tackling a thief to the ground and holding him in a chokehold. Meanwhile, aast August, Sir Ben Ainslie was robbed at knifepoint for his £17,000 Rolex in the Spanish city. Ainslie, 47, recalled the horror as a gang mugged him while out for a meal on Saturday night in Barcelona. The terrifying attack unfolded when he was leaving a restaurant, as reported by local media La Vanguardia. And last year, unbelievable footage captured a thief swiping a Brit tourist's phone just as he proposed to his girlfriend in Barcelona. Footage showed Charlie Bullock surprising his now-fiancée Hannah McNaghten by going down on one knee - but the romantic moment is cut short as a thug is captured nabbing the device. Charlie propped up his phone on the wall as the two posed for a picture outside Barcelona's famous Arc de Triomf, with Hannah totally unaware of what would happen next. And in 2022, Barcelona FC star Robert Lewandowski chased a thief who stole his £59,000 watch as he signed autographs. Before an evening training session, the Poland hitman stopped to greet fans outside the club's Ciutat Esportiva complex. But one crafty thief used the distraction to open Lewandowski's car door and make off with the high-end time piece.

Last month we told how teams of thieves were leaving the taxpayer-funded hotel to hit London's West End in organised shoplifting sprees. A whistleblower who works for a security firm on Oxford Street had tipped us off about the 'huge influx' of gangs using alarm-dodging tactics to loot thousands of pounds of gear from stores such as Liberty. Commander Andrew Featherstone said: 'Tackling shoplifting remains a priority for the Met and I'd like to thank The Sun for assisting our investigation. Through proactive patrols and activity we have solved 163 per cent more cases this year than in the same period last year.' Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick added: 'It is great to see the police taking action following The Sun's superb investigation. These individuals should face the full force of the law and be deported if they are found guilty.' A Met spokesperson confirmed two arrests had been made and that investigations were ongoing. They said: 'The men, aged 36 and 31, were arrested at a hotel in Wembley on the morning of Thursday August 14 on suspicion of theft. Gang bundled pregnant woman into van and threatened to cut her fingers off
Audi Johnson, 35, Ahmad Ghiasi, 26, and Nicholas Mitchell, 55, bundled their victim who was six months pregnant, into the back of a van after she left her north London home on the morning of May 10 2024. She was blindfolded and bound at the wrist with cable ties by the gang as they sped away, before they fired questions at about her partner where one of them threatened: 'If you lie to me I'm gonna kick the baby out your stomach.' Nicholas Mitchell, 55, has been jailed along with Audi Johnson and Ahmad Ghiasi (Metropolitan Police/PA) Then a series of phone calls was made to her partner as the gang threatened to cut off her fingers if he did not quickly carry out their demands for money and valuable jewellery, the police said. Johnson, Ghiasi and Mitchell were found guilty of conspiracy to kidnap last month after a six-week trial at Kingston Crown Court. They were members of a London-based gang, who had been contracted to carry out the kidnapping, the force said. Ahmad Ghiasi was part of the gang that bundled their victim into the back of a van (Metropolitan Police/PA) The 36 year-old woman said she has not been able to go home since the traumatic ordeal and spent the rest of her pregnancy sleeping on her sister's couch. In her victim impact statement, she told the court: 'The incident ruined my life. I will never be the same person again. I am having to start my life all over again. 'I will forever have fear and paranoia as part of my life now. I didn't deserve to be a victim of what happened to me. And to top it off, it was all made so much worse by being pregnant. 'This will always be something that will be part of my pregnancy, which is meant to be a happy experience, and will always be something that is a part of my daughter.' Audi Johnson has been jailed for his part in the kidnap (Metropolitan Police/PA) She was kidnapped as she waited for a cab to take her to a personal training session with her mother and sister. She was walked along the curb close to her Enfield home, when she was suddenly grabbed and thrown into the back of a white Ford Transit van. A police spokesman said the Met's Flying Squad responded to the crime immediately. They tracked the van using CCTV and located the vehicle the same night the hostage was recovered. DNA evidence, fingerprint impressions and mobile phone data were used to identify the suspects. The police said Johnson, of Cranberry Close, Northolt, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap and was sentenced to five years and four months. Ghiasi, of Fourth Avenue, Luton, was sentenced to seven years for conspiracy to kidnap. Mitchell, of Mannock Close, Barnet was sentenced to nine years for conspiracy to kidnap.
