Why Napoli and Inter disagree on dates for final round of 2024-25 Serie A season

Yahoo19-05-2025

Despite there being just one point separating Napoli and Inter at the top of the Serie A table with one game to go, it has not yet been confirmed when the final round of the 2024-25 season will take place, and the two teams involved in the title fight have different dates in mind for the Scudetto showdown.
Napoli were held level at 0-0 away against Parma on Sunday night, while Inter were pegged back twice against Lazio for an eventual 2-2 draw in San Siro, which keeps the Partenopei one point clear at the top of the Serie A standings heading into the final week of the season.

However, given that it is still technically possible for there to be a Serie A play-off, and with Inter participating in the Champions League final one weekend after the league season is due to finish, it is increasingly likely that the last round of the 2024-25 season will take place midweek.
Napoli and Inter, however, have two different preferred dates in mind. Here's why.
Why Napoli and Inter want last round of Serie A season to be played on different days

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter would prefer to play the final match of the Serie A season on Thursday, in order to give themselves as much time as possible to prepare for the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain scheduled for May 31.

Napoli, meanwhile, would prefer to play the game on Friday night, which would allow them to celebrate the title heading into the weekend if they are victorious in their last match of the season against Cagliari.
Importantly, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that the TV broadcasters DAZN would also prefer to play the game on Friday instead of Thursday in order to maximise viewing figures, as a Friday night game tends to bring a bigger viewership than games on Thursday.
A decision over the scheduling for the final week of the Serie A season is expected to arrive by the end of Monday.

Galatasaray optimistic on Osimhen deal despite new interest from England

Galatasaray optimistic on Osimhen deal despite new interest from England Galatasaray are optimistic about securing the permanent signing of Victor Osimhen from Napoli, despite competition from Premier League teams. Osimhen scored 37 goals in 41 games on loan at Galatasaray last season, after moving to the Turkish side in a shock deal, following his fallout at Napoli. Advertisement Galatasaray are desperate to keep the forward at the club, with Osimhen having broken the single-season goal record for an overseas player in Turkish football last season. The 26-year-old has a €75m (£63.8m) release clause in his contract at Napoli and Galatasaray are prepared to smash the Süper Lig transfer record to land the Nigerian. However, the 'biggest issue' remains the structure of the deal. Galatasaray want to pay the release clause in a series of instalments, while Napoli are demanding as few instalments as possible. The deal would smash Galatasaray's previous transfer record, the €18m deal saw took Gabriel Sara to the club from Norwich City last summer. The Turkish Süper Lig transfer record is just €19.5m as things stand. Galatasaray offer Osimhen huge contract Having secured the marquee recruit of Leroy Sane on a free transfer, Galatasaray have offered Osimhen a huge contract. The deal on offer is reportedly worth between €15m and €20m per season (£245,000 to £326,000 per week). Advertisement The Nigeria international turned down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia earlier this summer in favour of staying in Europe. Several English sides have considered a move for Osimhen, including Chelsea and Manchester United, but neither have formalised interest with a concrete offer. Inter formulate new plan for Hojlund with Manchester United

Inter are still keen on striking a deal with Manchester United for former Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund during the summer transfer window, but are left exploring the possibility of signing the 22-year-old on loan as things stand. The Nerazzurri are looking to reinforce their attacking department after letting both Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa leave on free transfers this summer, while Mehdi Taremi, currently stranded in Iran, will also be allowed to leave if an appropriate offer comes in. Advertisement La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Inter are moving closer to a deal with Parma for youngster Ange-Yoan Bonny, who has recently worked under the new Nerazzurri head coach Cristian Chivu, and that Hojlund remains the preferred option to rotate with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez in the starting line-up. (Photo by) United's asking price and Inter's demands for Hojlund According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, United remain adamant that Hojlund will not leave the club for anything under €45m this summer. Any less would represent a capital loss for the Premier League giants, who paid over €75m plus up to €10m to sign him from Atalanta two years ago. Advertisement While United are adamant on their €45m valuation, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Inter have slightly less than that to spend on a new striker this summer, which leaves them looking at the possibility of signing Hojlund on loan with an option or obligation to buy. BILBAO, SPAIN – MAY 21: Rasmus Hojlund of Manchester United runs with the ball whilst under pressure from Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario of Tottenham Hotspur during the UEFA Europa League Final 2025 between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at Estadio de San Mames on May 21, 2025 in Bilbao, Spain. (Photo by) Sunday's report claims that the Nerazzurri will push to sign Hojlund on an initial loan deal, including a significant fee, with an option to buy in the summer of 2026. The Pink Paper suggests that Inter could tempt United with a large loan fee, which they hope will then decrease the cost of an option to buy clause the following summer. Reports elsewhere indicate that Hojlund is keen on a return to Serie A and keen on the idea of joining Inter this summer, after a disappointing two seasons in the Premier League with United.

Former Marseille boss leading candidate for Italy coaching vacancy

Former Olympique de Marseille manager Gennaro Gattuso is on the verge of becoming the new manager of Italy, with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that an agreement could be reached in the coming days. The man who helped the Italians win the World Cup in 2006 over France recently left his role as manager of Croatian club Hadjuk Split earlier this month. In 2023-24 Gattuso served as manager of Marseille but was sacked after just five months on the job, winning nine of his 24 matches at the helm of the French side. Advertisement Former AS Monaco and FC Nantes coach Claudio Ranieri was approached to take over from Luciano Spalletti, who was dismissed earlier this month, but declined. Italy have three points from two group matches in 2026 World Cup qualifying, currently outside of the play-off positions. As a manager, Gattuso led Napoli to the Coppa Italia in 2019-20, winning that trophy once as a player along with two Serie A crowns and a pair of UEFA Champions League titles as well. Gattuso officially retired from the national team at the end of their 2010 World Cup campaign, with his side losing 3-2 to Slovakia and exiting in the group phase of that tournament for the first time since 1974.
