(Pic: DBKK) Kota Kinabalu: City Hall (DBKK) announced the temporary closure of the car park at Taman Poket in conjunction with the upcoming Sugandoi Kaamatan Final at the city level. The closure will take effect from 1am on Sunday (April 27), and will remain in place until 5pm on Saturday (May 3). The car park, located opposite the DBKK Enforcement Department, will be closed to facilitate preparations and the staging of the Sugandoi Kaamatan Final, a highly-anticipated cultural singing competition held as part of the annual Kaamatan Festival celebrations. DBKK advised the public to comply with instructions issued by on-site enforcement personnel and to utilise alternative routes to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety during this period. 'This temporary closure is essential to ensure the smooth running of the event and the safety of all participants and visitors. We appreciate the cooperation of all road users and members of the public,' said DBKK in a statement issued by its Public Complaints and Public Relations Department. The Sugandoi Kaamatan Final is one of the highlights of the city's Kaamatan festivities, showcasing the vocal talents of participants from various communities and celebrating Sabah's rich cultural heritage. One victim was ejected from the vehicle while the other was trapped inside the wreckage of the Perodua Viva during the 9pm incident. City Hall urged to reform parking guidelines in Kota Kinabalu
KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and relevant planning authorities are urged to review and reform urban design guidelines to ensure they are inclusive, realistic, and community-friendly. This follows DBKK's recent announcement of enforcement against vehicles parked along roads and public spaces in residential areas. National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (Sabah chapter) chairman David Chan said the city hall should adopt a more practical and empathetic approach to parking issues, especially during festive seasons and family gatherings. He expressed concern over the recent compounding of vehicles in densely populated housing estates, calling it "illogical" and out of touch with reality. "We urge DBKK to consider amending current planning rules. For example, allowing part of the designated 10% open space in housing areas for temporary community parking during peak periods or special events," he said on Saturday (June 7). Chan added that Sabahans are known for their tolerance and understanding, and local authorities should reflect the same values in their policies. "Penalising people during festive or family gatherings sends the wrong message to communities already facing limited parking due to outdated urban layouts. "If we cannot learn to live together with tolerance and practical solutions, it may be easier to live on the moon than in our own neighbourhoods," he said. He emphasised that urban policies should support the people, not punish them, and called for a comprehensive review to better reflect today's needs. In its earlier statement, DBKK said it had received frequent complaints about traffic congestion caused by roadside parking in housing areas. Under the Streets and Public Places By-Laws 1966, offenders risk fines of up to RM500. Residents were reminded to park within their own compounds, as roadside parking could obstruct traffic and block emergency services. DBKK stated that the enforcement is part of efforts to maintain Kota Kinabalu's image as a clean, safe, and orderly city. Company not repairing damaged road

SIPITANG: Residents living along the road from Basio to Meligan and up to Long Pasia are calling on the concession company to repair the severely damaged route, which has become nearly impassable. A community representative, Jennifer Opai, voiced their frustrations to Daily Express on Sunday, pointing out the poor state of the road which has made travel extremely difficult for all users. Advertisement Frustration is mounting as even four-wheel-drive vehicles struggle, often getting stuck in mud. This has disrupted the delivery of essential supplies, including food, to Long Pasia. Jennifer cited past tragedies, including a sick individual who died en route due to the poor road conditions and a pregnant woman who was forced to give birth by the roadside after an ambulance could not reach her in time. The road's condition also impacts local farmers, who rely on it to transport their produce to Pekan Sipitang. Without repairs, their livelihoods are at risk as crops cannot reach the market. 'How long must we endure this?' Jennifer asked, noting that many residents are left in despair as their income dwindles due to the impassable road. The situation also raises concerns about medical emergencies. 'With the road in disrepair, how will Health Ministry ambulances deliver medicine or transport patients from Long Pasia and surrounding villages? What if food supplies run out and cannot be replenished from Sipitang? said Jennifer. The severity of the issue was obvious when several four-wheel-drive vehicles, including a TV3 crew, were stranded and unable to reach Long Pasia on Saturday. Meanwhile, a school clerk at SK Ulu Bole, Yoanes Paras recounted frequent breakdowns and the need for assistance to pull his vehicle out of the mud during his 10 years of working in the area. He urged the government to prioritise upgrading the road, pointing out development in villages like Long Pasia including its homestay tourism potential will remain a distant dream without proper infrastructure.
