The meeting was also attended by Mutiara GRS members. 'On behalf of the State Government, I express my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of the late Zara Qairina. We pray that the family will be given strength to face this challenge,' said Hajiji. He said at the outset and as proof that the State Government was concerned about this issue, he had directed the Minister responsible for the Sabah education portfolio Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif and Kawang Assemblyman Datuk Seri Ghulamhaidar Khan Bahadar to visit the late Zara Qairina while she was still receiving treatment at the hospital. Hajiji said the wave of solidarity #JusticeforZara initiated by netizens demanding justice for the late Zara Qairina is commendable, but the public should avoid making unwarranted speculations. 'We leave it to the police and other relevant authorities to conduct the investigation and hope this can be completed as soon as possible,' he added. Meanwhile, Juliah expressed understanding of a mother's feelings who has lost a beloved child. 'The safety of children, especially boarding school students, must be prioritised to prevent tragedies like this from recurring,' she said. The late Zara Qairina, a Form 1 student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, died on July 17 after being found unconscious near her dormitory, a shocking incident that has led to calls for tightened student safety measures. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Housewife loses RM129,420 in Telegram job scam

JERANTUT: A housewife in Jerantut lost RM129,420 after falling victim to a job scam promoted via the Telegram messaging app, which falsely used the name of a legitimate company. Jerantut deputy district police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Azahari Mukhtar said the victim received the offer on Aug 8. The job was supposedly to evaluate products and write reviews in return for commissions. He said the woman then communicated with an individual posing as an agent, who instructed her to make several payments under various pretexts, including task fees, company collaboration charges, and technical service fees. "Starting from Aug 13, the victim made multiple bank transfers to several local accounts. The total losses amounted to RM129,420. "On Aug 14, she was asked to make another payment but became suspicious," he said in a statement today. The victim later lodged a police report at the Jerantut Police Station. "It is understood that the money came from her savings and her husband's business earnings. "The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he added. Police have urged the public to be cautious of online job offers promising high returns and to verify account numbers using the official portal before making any transactions.

Thousands participate in ‘Justice for Zara' rally at Sabah's Padang Merdeka

KOTA KINABALU: Downtown Padang Merdeka was a sea of black and torchlight as people gathered in solidarity at the Justice for Zara rally on Friday (Aug 15) night. Supporters carried placards, banners and posters with anti‑bullying messages, calls for justice, and #JusticeForZara. They gathered from around 6pm, and the crowd swelled at dusk. Organisers called for justice, spoke about bullying, prayed for Zara Qairina Mahathir, and sang during the three‑hour rally. Politicians including Sabah PKR chief and Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud attempted to speak but were initially rejected. Sabah Pakatan Harapan adviser Datuk Seri Christina Liew and Parti Warisan Youth chief Datuk Azis Jamman also tried to speak. After persuasion, the organisers allowed brief remarks. Liew said she attended as a citizen seeking justice for a 13‑year‑old whose life was cut short. "We are together, irrespective of our social status or religious background, with one voice for the victim and others who suffered similar fates," she said. "Tonight, I urge the authorities to ramp up efforts to combat bullying in schools," she said. Speaking to reporters, Liew said authorities must move beyond reactive approaches and focus on prevention. "Let us, as legislators, enforcers, activists, school authorities, parents, or educators, ensure safe schooling at all times. "Perhaps a proactive child protection policy can enable teachers and wardens to anticipate and prevent danger. All of us do not want a recurrence of the horrifying incident that befell Zara," added Liew. Earlier, Azis Jamman said vigils show a strong and growing demand for justice and added that justice delayed is justice denied. When Mustapha spoke, he said that he forgave those who linked his family to the case and called for the culprits to be brought to justice. "I came for Zara," Mustapha said. Many called for a thorough investigation after Zara Qairina died on July 17, a day after being found unconscious below her hostel building. Vigils were held across the state to demand justice for Zara, with more planned in the coming days. Solidarity events were also held in Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and Australia.
