Elderly man killed, child and woman injured in brutal Estcourt attack

The Citizen6 days ago
The community of Estcourt, KZN, has been rocked by a horrifying murder that happened on Wednesday morning in the kwaSobabili area, Ward 14.
Estcourt News reports that a 78-year-old man was hacked to death with an axe.
According to reports, a 25-year-old went to his neighbour's home, picked up an axe lying on the ground and approached the elderly man before fatally attacking him. It is alleged that the 25-year-old suffers from a mental health condition and had defaulted on his psychiatric medication.
Speaking to the Estcourt News, ward councillor Saziso Shabalala confirmed the incident.
What is even more shocking is that, after killing the old man, the alleged murderer returned to his own home and attacked a sleeping three-year-old child.
'The baby was found lying on the floor and unresponsive. We feared the worst and thought the child had died,' said Shabalala.
'Fortunately, when the child was rushed to hospital, it was discovered that he had fainted. He was in a critical condition and was immediately transferred to a hospital in Ladysmith. We suspect the child may have been thrown against the wall.'
As if that was not enough, the suspect reportedly left his home and went on to assault a 44-year-old woman with a knobkerrie, leaving her seriously injured. The woman was treated at a clinic in Ntabamhlophe.
Police were notified and the suspect was apprehended.
This disturbing attack follows a similarly violent incident in the Emabhalonini area on June 30, where two men were brutally killed, leaving the local community in shock and disbelief.

One robber had a toy gun

A man was arrested following last night's robbery at Safarie Supermarket. He was arrested after he stumbled into the adjacent tavern with a bullet wound to his leg. It is believed he is one of the four robbers. He was shot by a security guard. The security guard, unaware of the robbery, entered the supermarket and disrupted the robbers' plans. 'One of the robbers pointed a gun at me. Instinctively, I reached for my gun and shot,' the security guard, who wishes to remain anonymous, said. The robbers returned fire and fled the scene, allegedly in a white BMW. The injured robber fled to the tavern to hide. There it was discovered that he had a plastic toy gun. Back in the supermarket, a traumatised cashier told police, four men came in and one walked directly to the till where she was working. The cashier, who did not want to mention her name, because she fears for her life, said, the armed man told her to hand over all the money in the till. Police spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall said the cashier also told police she saw another armed man taking a customer to the kitchen, where he was told to lie down. 'When the security guard started shooting, the robbers returned fire. It is a miracle that no one was injured,' Hall said. Outside the supermarket, a man who sleeps in a tent close to the supermarket said he got the fright of his life when he saw men running and bullets flying. He also refused to give his name. He said, 'There were four men. One ran into the tavern, and the others fled. One of the bullets ricocheted and scarred the man on his leg. The wounded man was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Witbank News/Nuus (@witbank_news) Robberies increase in eMalahleni Commenting on the surge of business robberies, Hall said on August 8 a man alleged that he went to withdraw money with his colleague at a mall, only to be robbed shortly after. Upon return from the mall, the victim said his colleague dropped him off inside their premises and drove off. He went in and dropped the pile of money at his other colleague's desk to go and get a bag, but came rushing back as his colleague reportedly screamed for his name in a sudden panic, seeing two armed men approaching the office door. The men robbed them of the cash and several gadgets and fled the scene, leaving the two locked inside the office. EYEWITNESS TELLS OF SAFARIE SHOOTING On August 9, five men pretending to be customers entered another store. One of the men walked up to the till, pointed a firearm at the customers and staff directing them to one side. The gang took off with cash and expensive alcohol. With business robberies on the increase, Hall again stressed the importance of jacking-up security. 'Prevention is the most powerful tool. Good lighting, visible cameras, and staff training can make a huge difference in deterring criminals before they act.' Accused Heidelberg lawyer disputes age of girl in human trafficking trial

The Heidelberg lawyer accused of buying a 13-year-old girl from her mother, who allegedly sold the sexual services of her underage girls on websites, is now disputing the girl's age. Boksburg Advertiser reports that Carel Schoeman and his co-accused, the mother, made another court appearance in a High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court. Schoeman faces 26 charges, while the mother faces 72. Both accused pleaded not guilty to all charges during an earlier court sitting. The charges include rape, sexual abuse of a minor, child trafficking and pointing a firearm. The alleged crimes took place between mid-2022 and early 2023 in areas across Gauteng, the Free State and KZN, including Boksburg, Heidelberg, Brakpan, Springs, Villiers, Amanzimtoti and Ramsgate. In his plea explanation, Schoeman claimed he believed the girl was 19 years old at the time of the alleged offences. During the court proceedings, Schoeman's advocate, Sita Kolbe SC, cross-examined former investigating officer Captain Veronica Banks. Kolbe questioned whether the complainant's age was medically verified. Banks said it was not necessary, as a copy of the girl's birth certificate was sufficient, and the mother also confirmed her age. Kolbe further asked Banks why the police did not accept an ID stating the girl was 18. Banks said this identity document was fake. She testified that the minor girl referred to a relationship she had with another man and said that she had undergone an abortion. Kolbe questioned why the other man had not been arrested. Banks responded that having a relationship with someone does not necessarily mean that sexual intercourse took place. According to Banks, there is a list of names showing payments made to the mother. This would be investigated separately. The mother's aunt also testified. During cross-examination, the witness mentioned a phone call from the eldest daughter, in which the child asked if she could stay with her. The trial continues.
