It was only two seasons that Cape Town City were the toast of the town.
They had finished runners-up to champions Mamelodi Sundowns and were heading into Africa to dine with the elite of the continent in the CAF Champions League for the first time.
It was the realisation of a dream its charismatic owner John Comitis had when he resurrected the once iconic Cape Town football club back in 2016.
Those heady days are though a distant memory with City's entire future hanging on the edge of a cliff heading into the final game of the 2024/25 season against high-flying neighbours Stellenbosch FC at DHL Stadium on Saturday (3pm kickoff).
City are effectively in last place, with only the insolvent Royal AM below them, on the Betway Premiership ladder with a defeat to Stellies condemning the Citizens to the lottery of the relegation playoffs.

Even a win over Stellenbosch could still see City contest the playoffs should SuperSport United, who are level on 26 points but with a superior goal difference, beat Richards Bay and Golden Arrows emerge victorious against former City coach Eric Tinkler's Sekhukhune United.
The stakes in the Western Cape derby are therefore so much more than just bragging rights this time around with the City's PSL status on the line.
Meanwhile, in the maroon corner, Stellenbosch are in dreamland after finishing runners-up in the MTN8 competition and enjoying a maiden CAF Confederation Cup run all the way to the semi-finals, which included a victory over Egyptian giants Zamalek in the quarter-finals in Cairo.
Crucially, Stellies have not allowed their Betway Premiership form to falter and currently occupy third position.
However, Steve Barker's men need to claim all three points if they are to be ensured of an African adventure again next season due to Sekhukhune United breathing down their necks just a point behind in fourth place.
A limited number of 𝑭𝑹𝑬𝑬 Cape Derby tickets are still available exclusively at the selected FNB branches below:

'Yes, when the fixture list came out right at the beginning of the season, seeing that we're playing City on the last day of the season, I always anticipated it would be a great way to end the season, a massive derby between the two clubs,' Barker said.
'Obviously, as it has panned out over the season, it's a very, very key game for both clubs, obviously for different reasons. Obviously, I think they're fighting for their lives and therefore it doesn't make the game at all any easier.
'In fact, I believe it makes it difficult because obviously they'll be fighting for survival and it does become tricky. But it's important that we also focus on what we need to achieve and keep our commitment as high as it can be until the last kick of the ball in the last game.

'I advised Chiefs to sign Mayele but Bobby ignored me'
Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Kanga Nzenza says he once advised Amakhosi to sign Congolese top striker Fiston Mayele, but his plea was left unheard. Mayele is one of the hottest strikers on the African continent, having helped Pyramids win the CAF Champions League this past weekend. The 30-year-old finished the competition as the top goalscorer, having scored in the semi-final and final. Since last year, Kaizer Chiefs have been linked to Mayele, but no formal bid has been made by the Soweto giants. Nzenza mentioned that he spoke with Amakhosi boss Bobby Motaung about the striker. 'I once advised Chiefs to acquire Mayele,' Nzenza told KickOff. 'Just look at what he is doing now. I was clear that Chiefs needed to sign him because he has the ability to do well here. He can blend well with the Chiefs players and has been performing well, even though he may not be in top form at the moment. 'I even mentioned to that I was struggling to reach Bobby Motaung about Mayele because he is always busy. My plea was that Chiefs must sign him. They received my message, but they didn't act on it,' added the retired footballer. 'At the time, he was playing for Yanga in Tanzania, but then a club from Egypt signed him. He's an exceptional player. Whenever he comes to play for the national team, they refer to him as a super sub. 'Whenever he comes on, he changes the game. Look at how Sundowns lost the [Caf] Champions League because of him.' Given how much Mayele earns at Pyramids, Kaizer Chiefs are unlikely to afford his wages. The striker is set to leave the Egyptian club at the end of the season, according to reports. Kaizer Chiefs target prolific lower league striker amid transfer race
Kaizer Chiefs have stepped up their pursuit of one of the lower divisions' most exciting forwards, as they look to sharpen their attacking arsenal ahead of the new Betway Premiership season. A source has confirmed that Amakhosi are closely monitoring Thapelo Matlhoko, the prolific striker from Kruger United. Who has become a hot property following a string of standout performances, as per Soccer Laduma . Chiefs aren't alone in the chase, but they appear to be in the driving seat. 'Now Kaizer Chiefs are also interested in him. But let's see where he will go,' a source close to the situation said. Matlhoko first caught the eye of scouts during the ABC Motsepe League playoffs, where his finishing instincts and physical presence turned heads. Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly kept tabs on him ever since. According to the source, Marumo Gallants, Golden Arrows, and two other unnamed Betway Premiership teams have also shown interest. However, it's Chiefs who seem most determined to secure his signature. 'As much as Chiefs have enquired about him, so has Golden Arrows and two other Betway Premiership sides. But the scouts at Marumo Gallants know him better and that gives them a better chance of signing him,' the source revealed. Matlhoko's current club, Kruger United, managed to retain him last season despite previous attempts from clubs like Gallants to lure him away. This time, though, the level of interest has escalated, and Kaizer Chiefs are well-positioned to convince the player to take the next step in his career. 'It's not the first time they have shown interest in him. During the ABC Motsepe playoffs last season they wanted him but Kruger United kept him at least for another season,' said a source. With Chiefs rebuilding under pressure and seeking fresh attacking options, Matlhoko could emerge as a low-risk, high-reward addition. Will Matlhoko be able to handle the pressure at Kaizer Chiefs? Kaizer Chiefs close to snapping up SuperSport United star
Kaizer Chiefs are on the brink of securing the signature of exciting SuperSport United left-back Aphiwe Baliti, as they begin a full-scale squad rebuild ahead of the 2025/2026 season. After another underwhelming league campaign, despite lifting the Nedbank Cup, the Soweto giants are wasting no time reshaping their team for a stronger push next term. Amakhosi's failure to clinch a top eight finish in the Betway Premiership for a second consecutive year, and with it, another absence from the MTN8, has triggered urgent calls for sweeping changes. New head coach Nasreddine Nabi, brought in to steer the club in a new direction, appears ready to revamp key areas of the squad. While attacking reinforcements remain a priority. The club is equally focused on tightening up its defence, particularly at left-back, where options are dwindling. Kaizer Chiefs currently have several left-sided defensive options, including Bradley Cross, Edmilson Dove, Happy Mashiane, and Bongani Sam. However, most of these names could be on their way out. That potential triple departure has placed left-back high on Chiefs' transfer wishlist. With 23-year-old Aphiwe Baliti emerging as a top target. Baliti enjoyed a breakout campaign with SuperSport United, featuring 18 times across all competitions in 2024/2025. His performances, marked by blistering pace, high work rate, and calmness on the ball, have caught the eye of Chiefs' scouts. Sources close to the player's camp have revealed that 'a deal is almost done'. Suggesting that the youngster is on the verge of completing a switch to Naturena. Will Aphiwe Baliti be a good addition to Kaizer Chiefs? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
