167 top Hindu SPM scorers receive cash awards from PHEB

GEORGE TOWN : A total of 167 Hindu students from 37 schools in Penang who scored 7As and above in the 2024 SPM examination received a total of RM70,200 in cash awards today. Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative by the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) recognised academic excellence and reflected the state's ongoing commitment to educational development. 'I am extremely proud of the 819 candidates in Penang who obtained straight As in the 2024 SPM exam,' he said at the award presentation at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang here today. Chow said as of May this year, PHEB had allocated around RM1.5 million to support 1,217 students across the state. PHEB deputy chairman Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran said this was the second consecutive year the board had recognised outstanding Hindu students in the SPM examination. He said each student would receive RM50 for every A, with amounts ranging from RM350 for 7As to RM550 for 11As. The most outstanding scorer with 9A+, Darshini Subash Sun from SMK Hussein Onn, received a trophy, laptop and RM450. Kuhan Tharman, an 8A student from SMJK Chung Ling, received RM400. Lingeshwaran said that between 2023 and May 2025, PHEB had channelled RM883,607 into education aid for students pursuing certificate, diploma and degree programmes, as well as welfare assistance. In total, nearly RM1 million had been spent, benefitting at least 1,028 Hindus in Penang, he said. 'This year, PHEB received RM2 million in state funding, up from RM1.5 million last year,' he said.

Indian airline IndiGo orders 30 Airbus A350 widebody planes

(EPA Images pic) NEW DELHI : Indian airline IndiGo said today it had signed an order for 30 more Airbus A350-900s, bringing its shopping list for the widebody aircraft from the European aircraft manufacturer to 60. 'We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s,' said Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, a company founded in 2006 and already behind the largest contract by volume in the history of civil aviation – 500 Airbus single-aisle aircraft by 2023. The Indian low-cost carrier, the country's biggest by market share, is positioning itself as a significant player in the long-haul market. 'This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network', the company said in a statement. 'This is yet another step in defining the airline's long-term plans of international expansion'. The A350 planes, with ranges of up to 15,000km, will allow it to further expand its network. Overall, IndiGo has placed orders for around 1,000 aircraft from the A320 family, Airbus's most successful model and rival of the Boeing 737 MAX, which has endured multiple setbacks after a series of safety scares. Willie Walsh, director-general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which began its annual industry conference in New Delhi today, said 'the development of India's air connectivity in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal'. Indian domestic air growth is 'running at over 10%' per year, Walsh said, ahead of the conference. The growth of its economy has made India and its 1.4 billion people the world's fourth-largest air market – domestic and international – with IATA projecting it will become the third biggest within the decade. Last year, India's domestic air passenger traffic reached a 'historic milestone, surpassing 500,000 passengers in a single day', according to India's ministry of civil aviation. The ministry boasts of a sector 'experiencing a meteoric rise'. Railways remain hugely popular but travelling by trains crisscrossing a country about three-quarters the area of the European Union is often slow and chaotic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is slated to address IATA delegates tomorrow, has made the development of the air sector a priority since coming to power in 2014. India has doubled its number of airports in the past decade to 157, with plans to have as many as 400 by 2047.

Tawau hosts landmark Scout gathering, fostering regional unity

TAWAU (June 1): The Third International Nusantara Jamboree in Tawau gathered over 2,300 participants from various countries, making it one of the largest youth gatherings in the Borneo region this year. The international-level event, held at Tiku Scout Camp, saw participation not only from across Sabah, Johor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan but also from Brunei Darussalam and the Indonesian Scout Movement (Gerakan Pramuka Indonesia). Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, stated that the jamboree served as an important platform in shaping the character and identity of young people through various physical, spiritual, leadership, and human skills programs. 'In reality, this jamboree is not just a scout gathering. It is a symbol of unity, a space for knowledge and cultural exchange, and a stage to nurture noble values such as courage, discipline, leadership, and respect,' he said. He made these remarks while officiating the jamboree in Tawau at Tiku Scout Camp recently. Nizam added that the jamboree, which brought together youth from diverse backgrounds, also played a role in strengthening regional unity and brotherhood, particularly among the Nusantara community. 'Knowledge is not just confined to books. What is learned here is not merely for earning badges but for life — learning independence, speaking confidently, and being courageous. 'This jamboree transcends flags and national borders. It fosters the true spirit of Nusantara scouts, carrying the torch of responsibility, peace, integrity, and respect for culture, the environment, and fellow human beings,' he explained. He emphasized the need to balance academic education and human skills, as they form the foundation for developing highly skilled, ethical and civilized human capital. Also present at the opening ceremony were the Head of the Indonesian Consulate in Tawau, Aris Heru Utomo; Sabah State Chief Scout Commissioner Jamaludin @ Jamal Jinal; Tawau District Scout Commissioner Lee Chee Kiong; and president of the Sabah State Scout Council, Sari Arshad.
