Chirag urged to contest state elections from ‘general' seat
Bihar assembly elections
from a general seat instead of a reserved one, citing the sentiments of the people and party workers.
Bharti said Chirag was not the representative of a single community but the "hope of entire Bihar", a remark widely seen as an attempt to project him as a potential chief ministerial candidate.
Chirag, who currently holds the food processing industries portfolio in the Narendra Modi govt, has in recent media interactions hinted at taking a more active role in state politics. He rejoined the NDA in the run up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Speculation around his assembly debut gained momentum after Bharti, also the party MP from Jamui, strongly advocated the move – first through a social media post and later in a media interaction.
"The people of Bihar have a rare attraction towards him (Chirag). He has acceptability across all castes and communities in the state. Everyone loves him," Bharti said in Delhi, adding that the party's state working committee has already suggested that Chirag take up a "bigger role" to accelerate Bihar's development.

While emphasising that some "political forces" had tried to limit Chirag's appeal to a specific caste, Bharti said he enjoyed wide support and must contest from a general seat to reflect his pan-Bihar identity. "Bihar has always remained at the centre of his politics," he added. "His vision for the state's development will become a reality only when he raises the issues from the 'Bihar House'," Bharti said.
Chirag has so far only contested Lok Sabha elections, including from reserved constituencies like Jamui and Hajipur.
His father, the late Ram Vilas Paswan, and uncle-turned-political rival Pashupati Kumar Paras began their political journeys in the Bihar assembly with Alauli in Khagaria as their launchpad before entering national politics.
"Jab neta pure Bihar ka hai, toh seat ka dayra kyon simit ho? (When the leader represents entire Bihar, then why should he be confined to a particular constituency?)" Bharti asked in his post, reiterating that Chirag's goal of an "Atmnirbhar Bihar" would be achievable only if he led the campaign while staying in the state.
Bharti said people across Bihar were urging Chirag to play a larger role in state politics. "A recent meeting of the party's state working committee has already passed a unanimous proposal that Chirag should himself contest the upcoming Bihar assembly elections," he said.
Party sources said LJP (RV) is working to expand its political footprint this election season. This was evident in a meeting of party workers held in Bikramganj on May 30, where it was decided to organise a "Nav Sankalp Mahasabha" at Babu Kunwar Singh Stadium in Ara on June 8.
The meeting followed PM Narendra Modi's address in Bikramganj earlier that day.

PM Modi Calls For Swadeshi Push Amid 25% Tariff Announcement By Donald Trump
New Delhi: Days after US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian exports, along with an unspecified penalty due to India's energy trade with Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded by urging citizens to embrace 'swadeshi' (locally made) products, emphasizing the need for economic self-reliance in the face of global instability. Speaking at a rally in his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi on Saturday, PM Modi underlined the growing uncertainty in the global economy and stressed that India must safeguard its economic priorities as it approaches the milestone of becoming the world's third-largest economy. 'Today, the world economy is going through many ups and downs. There is an atmosphere of uncertainty. In such a situation, every country is focusing on its interests. India is also going to become the third-largest economy in the world and, therefore, has to be alert to its economic interests. Our farmers, our industries, employment for our young people, their interests – all of these are paramount for us. The government is making every effort in this direction,' Modi said. He urged citizens to take ownership of the country's economic progress, encouraging them to support Indian-made goods in their everyday purchases. 'But, as citizens of the country, we also have some responsibilities... This is something not just Modi but everyone should keep saying. Anyone who wants to make India the third-largest economy in the world, any political party, any leader, should speak in the country's interest and instil in people that they need to resolve to buy 'swadeshi'... When we decide to buy anything, there should be only one measure: We are going to buy those things which an Indian has sweated to make. Anything that has been made by the people of India, using the skill of the people of India, by the sweat of the people of India, is 'swadeshi' for us. We will have to adopt the 'vocal for local' mantra,' he said. Calling for a renewed focus on the 'Make in India' initiative, Modi made a special appeal to the business community and retailers to prioritise local products during this period of economic flux. 'And today, I would like to make a special request to my brothers and sisters from the business world, to shopkeepers, that when the world is going through such uncertainty, we will sell only local products. This resolution will be true service to the country... The feeling of 'swadeshi' in every action will define our future. This will also be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Only through collective effort can we fulfil the dream of a developed India,' he added. The Trump administration's tariff announcement, made on Wednesday, was accompanied by a disparaging remark labelling India and Russia as 'dead economies.' The Indian government has responded cautiously, stating it is evaluating the consequences of the move and will take necessary action to protect national interests. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, addressing Parliament on Thursday, confirmed that bilateral trade negotiations with the United States are ongoing and reiterated the government's commitment to shielding Indian stakeholders from adverse external impacts. "The implications of the recent developments are being examined by the government. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is engaged with all stakeholders, including exporters and industry, to take feedback on their assessment of the situation. The government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and all sections of industry. We will take all necessary steps to secure and advance our national interest," Goyal said. As geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties continue to unfold, the Modi government appears set to double down on its domestic production and consumption strategies, positioning 'swadeshi' as both an economic and nationalistic imperative.

Former MP Prajwal Revanna gets life imprisonment in 2021 rape case
Prajwal Revanna, former MP and grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, was on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Bengaluru in a 2021 rape case. The special court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a total fine of ₹10 lakh on the suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader. The court said that the victim will be given a compensation of Rs 7 lakh. The court had on Friday convicted Revanna in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him. This case pertains to the rape of a 48-year-old woman, who was working as domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Holenarasipura, Hassan district. She was raped twice, at the farmhouse in Hassan and at a residence in Bengaluru, in 2021, according to a report by PTI. "...they say that I have raped multiple women, but none of the women have come out voluntarily to complain, they came six days prior to election (Lok Sabha polls last year)... the prosecution side brought them purposefully and made them file a complaint," Prajwal told the court. Pointing out that the woman had not informed anyone, including her husband or relatives, about the rape, he said she came forward with a complaint only after certain videos were circulated.
