SEREMBAN: A 53-year-old teacher claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to three charges of committing physical sexual assault against a 10-year-old female pupil.
The accused pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him before judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam on Thursday (July 17).
He was charged with committing the offences between 1pm and 1.30pm at the library of a school in Kuala Pilah on Jan 2 last year.
The accused was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and caning if found guilty.
Deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni then told the court her team was seeking bail of RM20,000 for each of the three charges.
She also asked the court to order the accused to stay away from the victim and prosecution witnesses, to report to the nearest police station once every month pending disposal of the case, and to surrender his passport to the court.
Norazihah also told the court that the alleged victim was a student of the accused.
Lawyer Ramzani Idris asked for a lower bail amount and said the accused has since been transferred to the district Education office in Kuala Pilah and would not have any contact with the victim.
He said the accused had also been cooperative during police investigations.
Judge Kamil then fixed bail at RM15,000 for each charge with one surety and allowed the other applications by the prosecution.
Mention was set for Aug 18.

MMEA seizes nearly RM830,000 in controlled items from boat off Sandakan

Malaysian Maritime personnel inspecting petrol drums and gas cylinders seized from a kumpit boat off Sandakan waters. SANDAKAN: Personnel from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized controlled items valued at nearly RM830,000 from a boat allegedly attempting to smuggle them to a neighbouring country off the coast of Sandakan. Sandakan Maritime Zone director Capt Muhamad Suhairy Hussain reported that the vessel was intercepted approximately 0.8 nautical miles from Tanjung Aru waters late Sunday (July 20), following suspicious behaviour. "Aboard the boat were a skipper and seven foreign crew members aged between 27 and 50 who failed to produce valid travel documents," he stated. Additionally, six passengers — four men and two women believed to be foreign nationals aged between 16 and 41 — were found on the vessel. Further inspection revealed 250 blue drums containing 50,000 litres of petrol, 15 drums filled with 3,000 litres of diesel, and 120 gas cylinders of various brands, all lacking valid declaration documents. The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1962, Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, and Immigration Act 1959/63. Suhairy emphasised that the operation demonstrates the agency's ongoing commitment to combat smuggling and safeguard Malaysian waters.

KANGAR: A Perlis local council assistant architectural officer, remanded for seven days since July 15 in a corruption probe, has been released on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) bail. The 37-year-old woman remains under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes alongside a retired enforcement assistant from the same council. Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani confirmed the release but stressed that investigations are ongoing. The case involves approximately RM70,000, with bribes reportedly ranging from RM300 to RM9,000. The retired officer, aged 61, was released earlier on July 17. 'The retired officer, who was remanded with the woman on July 15, was released on July 17,' Mohd Nor Adha told Bernama via WhatsApp. The suspects allegedly solicited bribes from applicants seeking house renovation permit approvals between 2022 and 2024. Elderly man in Sibu loses RM800,000 to fake online investment scheme

Mancha said the incident began in mid-June when the victim came across an online investment offer for 'GVD Coins' while browsing Facebook. 'The victim, who was enticed by the scheme, asked his family members to prepare a certain amount of money for the investment. 'His family members advised the victim not to easily trust in investments offered online but he ignored their advice. 'In this case, the victim carried out several monetary transactions in stages into the bank account provided by the suspect amounting to about RM800,000,' he said in a statement. Realising he had been scammed after failing to receive any returns, the victim lodged a police report. Mancha cautioned the public against falling for online investment schemes that promise high returns in a short time, stressing that these are often too good to be true. 'The people are also encouraged to check the list of approved investment companies or websites at the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) website or BNM Telelink 1-300-88-5465 or for the Securities Commission. 'Individuals who suspect they have fallen victim to cybercrime including phone scams, love scams, e-commerce fraud, or bogus loans should immediately contact the National Scam Response Center (NSRC) at 997 if they have just completed a fund transfer to the scammer's account or e-wallet,' he said. The police also recommended additional tools and platforms, such as the Whoscall mobile application, Investment Checker via or Check Scammers CCID app or the website for verifying suspect phone numbers or bank accounts. crime elderly investment scam Mancha Ata
