I don't think Materialists is a rom-com - it's something new entirely

Metroa day ago
Perhaps unexpectedly, a glossy and star-studded rom-com with Pedro Pascal is the film that has generated the most intense disagreements and backlash this summer – and I really don't get it.
From those questioning the 'com' part of Materialists' description given some of the storyline's surprisingly darker elements to those raging at Dakota Johnson's character Lucy making the 'wrong' choice at the end, the feelings have been fiercely felt.
Given its earlier June release in the US, we've already borne witness to the barrage of think pieces and annoyed social media posts from Stateside sceptics.
But for me, Materialists is a stylish and thought-provoking examination of the modern dating scene and society's obsession with trying to commodify everything – except actual love. It also serves as proof that we should stop forcing romance films to fit within a rigidly narrow definition.
Materialists is exactly the type of film I expected writer-director Celine Song to deliver after her poignant work in Past Lives about a missed and intensely nostalgic romantic connection, even if it's a little lighter and more superficial.
It's clearly struck a nerve once more though, given the discourse it's provoked – and depending on your stage in life and romantic situation, you may find the savagery with which it skewers the prejudices people have in terms of dating preferences intensely triggering or oddly comforting.

Johnson's Lucy works as a successful matchmaker in New York City, who has seen multiple clients to their end goal of walking down the aisle to a happily ever after, although she's currently struggling to get her favourite client Sophie (Zoë Winters) any dates.
While attending the obscenely lavish wedding of one of her successes, wealthy brother of the groom Harry (Pascal) strikes up a conversation with her about matchmaking, leading to her amazing demystifying of the job as just like 'working at a morgue or an insurance company' in the way it deals with emotionless facts about a person's job and vital statistics.
And as she's previously told a gaggle of interested female wedding guests, it's not actually about a second date or a wedding – 'You're looking for a nursing home partner, a grave buddy'.
Harry is charmed and they agree to go on a date, but Lucy also bumps into her ex, John (Chris Evans), a struggling actor who is working a catering shift. He's not the type of man Lucy sees a future with, but there's clearly still a connection there.
Each man offers something different, and it speaks volumes about Materialists that one of its most romantic lines is Harry telling Lucy 'I want to date you for your intangible assets' because he has 'enough material assets for the both of us'. Swoon!
Song remains such an impressively smart writer – funny but substantial in a way that keeps you thinking about (or indeed, fuming over) the film long after you've watched it.
The observations of Lucy's clients ring devastatingly true and preposterous, from the man insisting '39 is not 30s' of the woman he's been set up with, to the woman sniping 'is he actually 5'11 or 5'9 and lying?'.
There's also a brutal exchange between Lucy and a matchmaking colleague about 'niches' people can fill in a competitive market, all finance speak as they agree 'six inches can double a man's value': the dialogue pulls no punches.

While there are certainly a few twists in Materialists I didn't expect, it is perhaps a more obvious story than that of Song's Oscar-nominated Past Lives – although they can absolutely be viewed as close relations. More Trending
The film has a great cast in its heavyweight actors, which helps sell its aspirational and cinematic sheen, alongside a smooth soundtrack of perfectly picked pop. Pascal and his easy charm are the standout, although Johnson operates efficiently and sympathetically as the confused protagonist and – for many – audience surrogate.
Materialists makes the perfect argument for the creation of a new film genre by Song: romantic realism. Ignoring the expectations you may have about a movie sold as a rom-com – and what that's allowed to be – gives the film more space to deliver its exquisitely crafted yet cutting observations without the noise of society complaining about the mirror it holds up to us.
A sharp, smart and sometime uncomfortably accurate look at modern love and dating that might not go where you expect but still delivers satisfying entertainment.
Materialists is in cinemas now.

Nickelodeon star files for divorce after 4 years of marriage

Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell has reportedly filed for divorce after four years of marriage. The Drake and Josh star, 39, dated actress and model Janet Von Schmeling for five years before getting married in 2018. During their four-year marriage, Bell and Schmeling had son Wyatt together, born in 2021. In 2023, she filed for divorce, citing 'irreconcilable differences.' According to TMZ at the time, she requested legal and physical custody of their son, as well as spousal support and visitation rights for Bell. The publication suggests that there was 'no movement' in the case until last year, when the court reportedly requested both parties to meet to expedite proceedings. TMZ claim that Bell has filed for divorce himself, putting in his own petition from Florida. The couple are said to have been separated since 2022. According to Bell, he first found out that his wife planned to divorce him via social media. When the news broke on TMZ in 2023, he tweeted: 'I found out my wife filed for divorce from TMZ…check out my new song.' This came only a week after he had been reported missing and 'endangered' by Daytona Beach Police. Hours later, a spokesperson told 'At this time we can confirm law enforcement officials are in contact and Mr Bell is safe.' The Orange County Sheriff's Office added that the actor had been found in their jurisdiction 'unharmed' at around 11.30am, and deputies had taken action to make sure he received a 'mental health evaluation'. Bell joked about the situation afterwards, Tweeting: 'You leave your phone in the car and don't answer for the night and this?' Bell has experienced a troubled personal life since leaving Nickelodeon. In 2021, he was accused of having inappropriate conversations with a 15-year-old online that were sexual in nature. During the subsequent hearing, the actor pleaded guilty to the attempted endangerment of children, a fourth-degree felony, and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, a first-degree misdemeanour. After someone on social media branded him a sex offender, Bell responded: 'Do a second of research. This is what I have to live with everyday. They are literally going to kill me.' In another tweet, he added: 'In a separate tweet he added: 'Noooo Immmm Nooooooottttt [a paedophile]!!!! You people are going to kill me.' He went on to tell another user: 'Nooooo I wasn't!! You people are destroying my life.' Last year, the former child star came forward to allege that he was himself a victim of sexual abuse by dialogue coach and now-convicted sex offender Brian Peck. In the Investigation Discovery series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,Bell claimed that he had been 15 years old when the abuse happened. Peck worked as a dialogue coach on Nickelodeon's The Amanda Show, which Bell had starred in from 1999 to 2002. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video In August 2003, Peck was arrested on more than a dozen charges related to sexual abuse allegations involving an unnamed minor. More Trending The following year he pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act with a 14 or 15-year-old and to oral copulation with a minor under 16. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender. View More » has reached out to Drake Bell's representatives for comment. Got a story? Meghan Markle and Prince Harry 'split' over roles but it's good news for both of them

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced a new deal with Netflix - but one royal expert believes the announcement was very telling about their future directions Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's new Netflix deal underlines a major decision by the couple, according to a royal expert. ‌ The Sussexes have revealed they have signed a new "multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects". The pair's new deal means Netflix will have the first option on their new projects. ‌ Five years ago, Harry and Meghan secured a lucrative contract, thought to be worth more than 100 million dollars (£74 million), with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020 - but this new extension is seen as a downgrade on their previous exclusive rights deal and is believed to be worth a lot less. ‌ As the deal was announced, Meghan was quoted as saying how she and Harry were proud to be extending their partnership with the platform. And just hours later, the trailer for Meghan's upcoming second series of With Love, Meghan lifestyle show dropped. And former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond says it is telling that there is "scant mention of Harry" int he announcement. She told the Mirror: "It seems clear that this deal is very much Meghan's project. "It seems he may have played some part in the production of a documentary about a Ugandan orphanage, but it is Meghan who will be on screen presenting her lifestyle shows. "I think this underlines that the couple has decided that Meghan is really the TV personality, and Harry is more comfortable continuing his charity work. And I think that's the right balance for them." ‌ It comes after the couple's controversial docuseries, Harry & Meghan, in which they were highly critical of the Royal Family, has been among the streaming platform's most-watched documentary of all time with 23.4 million views. However, other projects, such as Harry's series on Polo, have failed to bring in anywhere near the same viewers. Meghan's latest project, her cookery and lifestyle show With Love, Meghan, released in March, failed to break into the top 300 most-watched shows on the streaming platform in the first six months of 2025 and was also panned by many critics. ‌ And Jennie added: "As I understand it, first look deals like this are not unusual in Hollywood. Arrangements like this usually come with a certain amount of financial investment in the company. And that's good news for Archewell. "The fact that Harry and Meghan have got any kind of new deal with Netflix really is one in the eye to everyone who said their contract was done and dusted. "Netflix has publicly hailed them as 'influential voices' -nd it's hard to argue with that. Whatever they do and say is widely reported on both sides of the Atlantic. "So I say well done to the two of them. They've shown that they still hold sway in Hollywood, and they've done what so many people said they couldn't: they've kept their link to Netflix alive and well and – to whatever extent – lucrative."
