Children must be aware of their legal rights, duties: DLSA
K. Ratna Prasadu, Secretary of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA-Eluru), on Wednesday (August 6) said children should be made aware of child-friendly legal services. He was addressing students of Oxford Olympiad School, Shanti Nagar, Eluru, during a special awareness session. The event was held as part of the nationwide initiative titled 'National Legal Services Authority – Child-Friendly Legal Services Scheme 2024,' following the directions of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA-New Delhi) and the State Legal Services Authority, Amaravati. The objective was to spread awareness among children on their rights and responsibilities. Mr. Ratna Prasadu emphasised that children should be well-informed about the laws applicable to them. 'Along with constitutional rights, they must also understand their duties in order to become responsible citizens,' he said. He expressed concern over anti-social elements increasingly targeting students for illegal activities such as drug trafficking and human trafficking. The youth must be extremely cautious while interacting with strangers and should never share personal information publicly. He said it was necessary to understand the importance of concepts like good touch and bad touch and called for collective efforts to prevent child marriages. Mr. Ratna Prasadu assured that free legal assistance would be provided to children whenever required. The event saw participation from Child Welfare Committee in-charge chairman P. ‘Penalty for power theft unfairly high & out of reach too'
Bhopal: In a rare occasion, the Opposition Congress joined hands with the ruling BJP MLAs in the House on Monday, demanding that the penalty in power theft cases be reduced. Raising the issue through a call attention motion, Ramesh Khatik of the BJP said that a compound interest of 16 percent is charged on a person accused of electricity theft. If the accused person pays the electricity bill five years later, he ends up paying more than double the bill. The case is put up in court and in Lok Adalats, the penalty is waived. Khatik questioned why the penalty can't be waived in the normal course if the person charged with electricity theft fails to turn up in Lok Adalat to settle the case for some reason. Khatik, who said that farmers and domestic consumers are the worst affected due to the excessive penalty of 16 percent compound interest on the bill, noted that no bank or financial institution gives so much interest as recovered from the consumers. He further mentioned that consumers, particularly farmers, often come to know of the case registered against them for electricity theft and put up in court quite late, and they sometimes don't receive notice for the Lok Adalat either, he added. Several MLAs from both sides joined Khatik in demanding that the penalty imposed on the bill in cases of electricity theft should be waived. However, energy minister Pradyamun Singh Tomar said that it's a legal issue and it can't be done by the state govt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your donations can help this little boy see again clearly Donate For Health Donate Now Undo He further explained that the compound interest of 16 percent has been decided by the State Electricity Regulatory Authority, but Lok Adalat for settling the compoundable electricity theft cases takes place every three months, and the penalty is normally waived there. Khatik, however, pointed out that the Lok Adalat takes place in Bhopal, and the cases at other places are settled online, which may not be convenient for many consumers, particularly farmers. The Electricity Regulatory Authority may also be informed about the debate in the House and asked to reconsider the provision of a hefty penalty on electricity theft cases. The minister, while maintaining that law is law, agreed to take up the issue with MP Electricity Authority as more and more members from both sides joined Khatik in support of his demand.

PLA court disposes 726 cases; To hold 30-day campaign
Dharwad: Not many people are aware that the has set up Permanent Lok Adalat Courts at six destinations across the state. Importantly, permanent district sessions judges have been appointed to dispose of the cases speedily through PLA courts. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a bid to educate the public on the merits of these PLA courts and for speedy disposal of cases, a 30-day campaign has been launched. During this campaign, the judiciary department in association with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) will organise awareness programmes at five places in each taluk, stated PLA Dharwad court chairman Nagarajappa Kuradakar. Speaking to mediapersons, he stated that all these years, the sitting sessions judge was given additional responsibility of handling the cases and disposing them. However, recognising that this was time-consuming, as the judges sat only once a week to hear cases and the cases continued to pile up, a permanent judge has been appointed to these courts, he informed. The Dharwad PLA has its jurisdiction over seven districts--Ballari, Koppal, Davanagere, Dharwad, Gadag, Uttar Kannada and Haveri and cases related to public utility services can be filed here afresh, he stated. In the last one year, the court has disposed of as many as 726 cases and 479 cases are pending. The verdict delivered here through conciliation cannot be challenged in any other civil courts, the judge said. Another advantage here is that no court fee is charged on the petitioner and the cases are solved amicably. The PLA courts are not bound by CPC (Civil Procedure Code) and Evidence Act, he added. Cases wherein there are discrepencies in public utility services up to Rs one crore compensation can be filed in this court, said Judge Kuradakar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now National Lok Adalat DLSA member-secretary and senior civil judge PF Doddmani stated that the courts in dharwad district will be holding National Lok Adalat on Sept 13.
