UP man falls from bridge, clings to tree for 22hrs before rescue

Time of India5 hours ago
Bareilly: A 25-year-old man who fell from a bridge and was swept away by the swollen Ramganga river to a flooded forested area near Maithra village of Moradabad district on Saturday night managed to somehow grab a branch of Eucalyptus tree and spent nearly 22 hours on it before being rescued around 7pm on Sunday.
Satpal Kumar, a daily-wager from Maithra, was on his way to his grandma's house on Saturday evening when he slipped and fell while crossing the Ramganga bridge around 9pm. He was swept away for nearly 1.5-km downstream when the "tree saved his life".
"It was a very frightening experience. It was pitch dark at night. The place was flooded and the water below was cold. It was a secluded area away from local settlements. I was terrified and shivering -- both hungry and thirsty.
It was raining too. My clothes were already wet. There was nothing I could eat... I survived on rain water," Satpal said of his ordeal.
Satpal added that before his phone went off on Saturday night, he managed to luckily inform his brother Veerpal of his plight.
With his phone "dead", an SDRF team along with local police located him after a three-hour search operation. He was weak and quite traumatised, police said on Monday.
Notably, parts of Moradabad have been struck by floods this monsoon.
"By Sunday morning, there was still no trace of Satpal," said Veerpal. "Fearing the worst, we approached Dalpatpur police station.
Station in-charge Dharmendra Kumar informed his seniors and initiated efforts to trace him. Police obtained the CDR of Satpal's mobile number, which revealed his location."
SSP Satpal Antil added: "Five teams were set up to rescue Satpal."
Still coming to terms with the frightening experience, Satpal said, "Throughout the night, I clung on to the tree's branches for dear life, at times struggling to keep balance... I thought I wouldn't survive and see the next morning."

NSUI neta, supporters face FIR for vandalism on GACC campus

Indore: An NSUI leader and his supporters were booked for allegedly smashing glass panels and scattering Parthenium hysterophorus, commonly known as carrot weed, inside the principal's chamber at PM College of Excellence Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Arts and Commerce College (GACC) on Monday. Bhanwarkuan police filed an FIR on Monday evening against NSUI leader Aman Patwari and his supporters for vandalising property and disrupting official work at the college. Videos of the incident were later shared by Patwari himself on social media. Footage shows him smashing the chamber doors' glass with an iron rod, breaking the lock, entering the principal's chamber, and scattering the weeds across the principal's office. Bhanwarkuan police station in charge Rajkumar Yadav said, "On the basis of principal Mamta Raikwar's written complaint and the CCTV footage evidence, the accused have been booked under Sections 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty), 331(3) (causing damage to public property), 324(3) (mischief), and 3(5) (criminal act with common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita" According to the FIR, the incident occurred around 10:30am., when Patwari and his supporters entered the administrative block without permission, carrying two iron rods and bundles of dry grass. They raised slogans against the administration and demanded entry into the principal's chamber. Despite faculty and staff trying to stop them, Patwari forced his way in. In the video, Patwari, who is a former student of the college, claimed the act was retaliation against the college's alleged inaction in clearing weeds near the statues of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Mahatma Gandhi on the college campus. The FIR also mentioned past disturbances by Patwari and his group. The college has sought strict legal action and police security to prevent further incidents. "This incident is both alarming and deeply disturbing. Given the seriousness of their action, I promptly initiated the process for lodging an FIR," GACC principal Dr Mamta Raikwar told TOI.
