'I'm a big believer in taking risks' says Elgin cocktail bar boss up for Entrepreneur of the Year
Elgin cocktail bar owner, Lauren McIntosh, is up for Entrepreneur of the Year. The 26-year-old is 'buzzing' with the nomination in this year's DRAM Scottish Bar and Pub Awards. She started her entrepreneurial career in 2020 after some words of wisdom from her mother. 'Just go for it', she was told, and she hasn't looked back since. Miss McIntosh said: 'We built a small bar in the garden and began doing garden parties as lockdown eased.' From there, Lauren moved into a premises in Elgin after a friend suggested it, and went for it. 'It was a risk, but it's paid off', says the bar owner. DRAM's Scottish Bar and Pub Awards announced their nominees for their 2025 ceremony last week. Lauren initially applied for the Mixologist of the Year category but was thrilled when organisers came back with a different suggestion. She said: 'I'd submitted the application and they got back to me saying, 'We loved your application, but we think you're more suited for entrepreneur'.' Lauren took a big risk starting her own business from scratch, but her determination, motivation, and passion have propelled her to success. She said: 'It's terrifying at times, but you'll never know unless you try and I'm a big believer in taking risks. 'During lockdown I realised there was a market for it, I enjoyed making cocktails and saw there was potential.' The Cocktail Joint has been open for three and a half years now, and she's finally feeling established. Lauren's bar, based in the heart of Elgin's town centre, is a cosy, stylish establishment where laid-back charm meets creative mixology. The Joint is a direct reflection of Lauren's vision and success, with every detail of the space bringing her ideas to life. 'I want people to have options you can't get anywhere else. 'If someone asks for something and we have the ingredients, we'll make it.' Being a solo entrepreneur in the hospitality scene hasn't been plain sailing in this current economic climate. Lauren told the Press and Journal that the economy at the moment has made things tough for her. Bars are closing left, right and centre, however, she's determined to continue building her business despite the challenges. 'Last year was the hardest, but this year feels like people are finally back to reality. 'They're going out more, enjoying date nights again, and that's made a difference.' Supported by loyal regulars, Lauren says the people of Elgin are at the heart of her business. She says: 'My local community keep this place alive, our regular customers are the best part of it all.' Lauren credits her customers and staff for the success of The Cocktail Joint, describing them as the people who 'make it what it is'. Lauren is determined to take her bar to new heights, from unique cocktails and private events to larger community showcases. At first, Lauren struggled to find staff who were the right fit, but she's now assembled the 'strongest team' she's ever had. She's optimistic and excited to continue building lasting memories with both her team and her customers.

Haircare brand ghd launch four new tools that make curls 'last all day'
ghd, the brand behind the viral Chronos straightener, has released a new collection of curling tools designed to create long-lasting waves - but do they live up to the hype? When it comes to salon-quality hair tools, few brands are as renowned as ghd. And now, the haircare retailer is taking curls to the next level with the launch of its brand new Chronos Curve range. Following the viral success of its Chronos straightener, the new collection features four curling tools designed to create long-lasting waves and ringlets that stay bouncy from morning till night. The range includes two curling wands and two tongs, each featuring ghd's signature heat technology and ceramic barrels for shiny, frizz-free curls. Each device is priced at £189, reflecting ghd's premium pricing, but those familiar with the brand will know that the tools often justify the cost. The Max Wand boasts a large barrel and is designed for longer hair and looser curls, while the Classic Tong promises sleek, defined waves. The Grand Tong, on the other hand, appears capable of creating voluminous ringlets that bounce with every movement. The Conical Wand, arguably the most versatile of the four, is designed to create more relaxed, natural curls. Our beauty writer, Lauren Codling, tried them out for herself when they first hit the market, and was impressed by the speed and final results. Shop the range £189 ghd Buy Now on ghd Product Description She said: 'It took me roughly 10 to 15 minutes to style my entire head, which is efficient by my standards. The wand was easy to manoeuvre and lightweight enough that my arms weren't tired halfway through. 'The curls impressively maintained their shape with minimal hairspray, turning slightly softer yet remaining intact, and my hair stayed sleek and glossy all night. However, styling the shorter front layers proved challenging, so bear this in mind if your haircut is similar.' The entire range heats to a steady 185 °C, which the brand touts as the 'optimum styling temperature', which Lauren said was 'spot on' for her fine-to-medium hair. However, if you prefer tongs with adjustable settings, Babyliss' Rose Quartz 25mm Curling Tong (£35, Amazon) has six temperature settings, ranging from 160°C to 210°C. Otherwise, the TRESemmé Large Ceramic Curling Tong (£27, Argos) has three settings, with a maximum temperature of 200°C. Additional ghd styling tools have garnered positive reviews as well. One Grand Tong user noted: "It slides through my hair to the ends smoothly and doesn't stick or pull at all. I like the fact I can curl right to the tips of my hair, which I struggle to do with the wand." Another person trying the Classic Tong added: "The curls lasted all day and still looked great the next day. The tongs were quick to heat up and cool down. It came with a handy glove which helped protect my hand from the heat of the tool." But the Grand Tong hasn't been a hit with everyone. One user expressed their disappointment, saying: "Unfortunately, the curls didn't hold in my thick, coarse hair-even with prep and setting spray. Although the tong is advertised to give long-lasting curls (up to 24 hours), mine fell out within a few hours, which was disappointing." Another customer who tried out the Max Wand left a three-star review, stating: "The 38mm barrel was a bit wide for my length of hair, so I ended up with loose waves rather than curls." However, not all reviews were negative. One satisfied customer commented: "I have tried various hair curlers in the past, but never one that worked for me. The thick barrel was great for my long hair, creating soft, wavy curls that I loved. Plus, it was really quick." They further added: "In less than 30 minutes, I had completed the style from start to finish, and it would usually take me a couple of hours."

Urgent warning issued over ‘very convincing' web scams as shoppers conned out of £100s
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHOPPERS have been warned to look out for "very convincing" web scams that are conning people out of hundreds of pounds. There has been a recent rise in criminals creating fake websites for well-known brands, experts say, and many scammers are using AI to help them. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Costco has recently seen a surge in fraudsters impersonating its website Credit: Getty Costco is one of the retailers that has recently been targeted by these criminals, with the wholesale business warning customers to be vigilant when shopping online. Dozens of reviews have appeared on Trustpilot in recent weeks from Costco shoppers who paid for orders but never received them, with some claiming to have bought items costing hundreds of pounds. Costco responded to several customers on the review site, writing: "We were unable to locate an order with the details provided and suspect that the purchase may have been made through a fraudulent website posing as Costco. "Unfortunately, there has been a recent increase in fraudulent websites impersonating Costco." In another Trustpilot response to a customer who had fallen for the scam, it urged shoppers to "check the URL which is displayed when shopping online". It added: "Our site displays at the beginning of the web address." Some Costco shoppers may have lost hundreds of pounds to the scam. In one review, a customer claims they bought a Bosch router table, which are on sale for up to £500 from some online retailers, but had not received it. Costco responded saying their order could not be found and it was likely bought through a fake website. Another customer said they ordered a keter Manor outdoor shed, which retails for over £200 on the high street, and were told by Costco they had likely been scammed. Avoid being ripped off by car hire companies with these four top tips It's not just Costco that has been targeted by fake websites - experts told The Sun that the scam is on the rise. 'Criminals are increasingly creating convincing looking websites that mimic well known retailer that lure shoppers in with seemingly genuine branding and tempting offers," said Jake Moore, global security adviser at ESET. "These sites often harvest lots of personal and payment information or take money without delivering goods." He said they're also becoming "incredibly easy to make" with the use of AI, as it means scammers no longer need to know how to code to create fake websites. "The end results are often near perfect copies too," he said. Starling Bank financial crime specialist Sarah Lenette adds: With the rise of AI, scammers have everything they need to create very convincing retail sites in very little time, which include all of the correct branding, products and relevant offers and deals." One common way you can end up on a fake website is by clicking on a fake ad on social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok or Instagram. "Users then unknowingly find themselves on a site believing they are on the legitimate retailer," Jake says. It comes after a raft of fake Wilko websites offering huge discounts were set up by scammers after the retailer fell into administration in 2023. Cath Kidston and Joules have also been targeted by the scams. How to spot a fake website While scammers have become more sophisticated, there are several ways you can keep an eye out for fake websites when shopping online. Which? Consumer Expert Rob Lilley-Jones says you should avoid any deals that seem "too good to be true" - as they usually are. "Another tell-tale sign of a scam website will be poor spelling and bad grammar," he adds. Look out for any websites that don't have a physical address and a phone number and email address to contact them. "If they don't, it's a red flag," Rob says. He also suggests using a domain checker like to see when the website was set up. "If it's recent, and the company claims to be a well-known one like Costco, it's a scam," he says. Sarah Lenette adds that you should be wary of any URLs for UK retailers that end in .org or .net. You should also avoid clicking on social media ads that you're unsure about, she says. "Always search for the retailer on a search engine and head to them independently, as well as checking for independent reviews on sites such as TrustPilot," she says. Costco was contacted by The Sun but declined to comment. Do you have a money problem that needs sorting?
