NHAI faces court scrutiny after 3 deaths in 40-hour Indore bypass jam
According to a report by NDTV, during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), NHAI's legal counsel reportedly said: "Why do people even leave home so early without any work?"
The case relates to a 40-hour traffic jam on the Indore–Dewas section of the Agra–Mumbai National Highway, in which three people died last week.
The counsel made this remark in relation to the massive traffic jam on Friday. The jam left Kamal Panchal (62) from Indore, Balram Patel (55) from Shujalpur, and Sandeep Patel (32) from Gari Pipalya village dead, the report added.
Court issues notice
In relation to the plea, the bench of Justices Vivek Rusia and Binod Kumar Dwivedi issued notice to the Centre and NHAI as well as the administration and police of Indore, seeking reply within a week. The court also directed that a private company constructing a road between Indore and Dewas on the National Highway be included in the list of respondents, reported PTI.
The court also noted that it ordered the completion of the road within four weeks in September last year, but it still remains unfinished, reported NDTV. On being asked about the same, the NHAI said that the delay was caused by the crusher units' strike.
On NHAI's counsel's remark, Girish Patwardhan, appearing for the petitioner, said that such reasoning is "unacceptable". "It would mean that ordinary citizens could no longer safely step out of their homes. The court did not take this argument seriously," he said, as quoted by NDTV.
Indore Collector Asheesh Singh visited the site on Saturday and blamed the traffic crisis on substandard construction work by the NHAI. He noted that the poorly built service road had developed potholes under the strain of heavy vehicular movement. The situation was further worsened by ongoing construction, which led to additional diversion-related pressure on the bypass, reported Dainik Bhaskar.
The court has set July 7 as the next date of hearing.

'Mango' Mishra Drank Every Evening At College Union Room, Turned It Into Bar
Kolkata: Monojit Mishra, the key accused in the Kolkata law college rape case, had turned the union room into a bar and a "party" place, his batchmate told NDTV on Friday. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, she said that Mishra, who has been arrested for allegedly raping a 24-year-old student inside the college premises last month, used to drink alcohol with his friends in the union room every evening. The woman, who took admission at the South Calcutta Law College in 2016, a year before Mishra was enrolled, said that he used to harass women. She said Mishra, alias 'Mango', had once thrashed a security guard. He used to threaten to shoot the college staff over every small issue, she said. Mishra, who once held a position in the student union of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, has multiple police complaints against him, including ripping off the dress of a woman student in July 2019 and molesting a woman in Swinhoe Lane in March 2022. He is also accused of beating up a college guard and damaging college property in a May 2024 case. He first joined the Kolkata college in 2007 and would have finished the course in 2012. During his time, he got involved in campus politics, and when the Trinamool came to power in Bengal in 2011, he dropped out before finishing his course. ' Mango' Mishra took readmission in 2017 and passed out in 2022. A year later, he joined the college as a casual, clerical staff member. The vice principal of the college told NDTV that he received Rs 500 per day for his work. Kolkata Rape Case The survivor in her police complaint has said that two men watched as a third raped her in a guardroom - after having bullied the guard into leaving - at the South Calcutta Law College on the night of June 25. The woman said three men - whom she only identified with the initials 'J', 'M', and 'P' - cornered her at 7.30 pm after a meeting of the ruling Trinamool's student wing. She said 'M' and 'P' locked her in a room with 'J', who tried to rape her. "I fought back... I cried and asked him to let me go... I even touched his feet, but he didn't let me go..." she told the cops. "He tried to force me with the intention of having sex. I kept pushing him back. I asked him to let me go. 'I can't do this, I have a boyfriend and I love him', I said." The main gate, she said, had been locked, and the "guard was helpless and did not help". She said she was then bundled into the guard's room (the guard was thrown out) where "'J' undressed me and started raping me. When I fought, he blackmailed me..." At 10.50 pm, she said in her complaint, the men released her, warning her again about informing the authorities. Four people, including Mishra and a security guard, have so far been arrested in the case.

44 External Injuries: Autopsy Report In Tamil Nadu Custodial Death Case
Chennai: A man in Tamil Nadu who was allegedly killed while in police custody suffered 44 external and many internal injuries, according to the autopsy report. The report said a linear 3-cm scar and three other old scars are consistent with cigarette burns. Ajith Kumar, 28, who worked as a temple guard in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga, was initially detained for questioning following a theft at Madapuram Kaliamman temple in Thirupuvanam. His forehead, arms, knee, foot and gluteal region had several abrasions and contusions, the post-mortem report showed. A cut section of the brain appeared congested, the autopsy report said, suggesting an excessive accumulation of blood within the brain's blood vessels. This phenomenon, often referred to as cerebral congestion or brain congestion, can be caused by traumatic brain injury from impacts to the head. "Forty-four injuries and more actually, so this is torture. Still, people have the guts to say he died of epilepsy," human rights activist and executive director of People's Watch, Henri Tiphagne, who is fighting this case, told NDTV. "The police vehicles given under modernisation have turned torture chambers, with the torturer sitting next, there is no record of who's picked up into these vehicles". His family has been telling the state government that the police tortured him to death in their custody. The case has sparked a huge political row in the state ruled by the DMK under Chief Minister MK Stalin. Complimenting the Madurai general hospital dean for the comprehensive post-mortem report recording all injuries, Mr Tiphagne added, "The police leadership is yet to mention the word torture. India doesn't have an anti-torture law. India is yet to ratify the UN convention on torture since 1997 despite several reminders". He said it is time Tamil Nadu that speaks high of social justice enact what he would call "Ajith Kumar Anti-Torture Law". Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran said he will visit Ajith Kumar's house in Sivagangai district's Thirupuvanam tomorrow to offer his condolences. Mr Stalin on July 1 said the state government will transfer the investigation of the alleged custodial death to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and assured the state's full cooperation in the probe. "Considering that five members of the police department have been accused in this matter, and to ensure that no doubts or suspicions arise regarding the investigation, I have ordered that the case be transferred to the CBI. The Tamil Nadu Government will provide full cooperation for the CBI probe," Mr Stalin said. All the five accused police personnel have been arrested and the deputy superintendent of police has been suspended. The Sivaganga superintendent of police has been put under compulsory wait.

Swift Bail For 7 Workers From Raj Thackeray's MNS In Marathi Slapgate Row
Mumbai: Seven members of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena - who assaulted a Mumbai shopkeeper for not speaking in Marathi, filmed their brutal attack, and shared it online - were released within hours of being detained yesterday evening, sources told NDTV Friday morning. Maharashtra minister Nitish Rane confirmed their 'arrest' in a brief interview with NDTV. But minutes after he spoke it emerged the seven men had never actually been arrested; they had only been detained and interrogated, their statements recorded, and then released. Mr Rane spoke to NDTV again and seemed uncertain before stating the men will, in fact, be arrested. "Arrest will get done soon... Chief Minister (Devendra Fadnavis) is also looking into it," he claimed, "Marathi should be spoken. No compromises... but nobody should take the law into their hand." Police sources told NDTV the seven had been released on bail bonds since the charges against them are of a lenient nature, and hold a maximum punishment of less than seven years. They can now only be arrested if the charges are amended to include more stringent ones. Deputy Commissioner of Police Prakash Gaikwad earlier told NDTV the assault on the Mumbai shopkeepre, as seen in the video shared online, is clearly a cognisable offence. The assault took place late Sunday. MNS 'Slapgate' Incident The shopkeeper, 48-year-old Babulal Chaudhary, who runs the 'Jodhpur Sweet Shop' in Mumbai's Mira Road suburb, was slapped and threatened by the seven MNS thugs because his staff member, Mr Bagharam, who is from Rajasthan, spoke to the men in Hindi. The thugs demanded Mr Chaudhary and Mr Bagharam speak in Marathi, to which the shopkeeper pointed out, quite correctly, that all languages are spoken in the state. NDTV identified four of the men in the attack but a police case was filed only two days later. It would be another 24 hours before the police summoned the thugs from Raj Thackeray's party. The assault triggered widespread outrage, particularly since it came as Raj Thackeray and his estranged cousin, Shiv Sena (UBT) boss Uddhav Thackeray, have been claiming credit for forcing the Maharashtra government to backtrack in the 'Hindi imposition' row. MNS, Maha Government Shocker Predictably, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena refused to apologise for the assault; the party's Mumbai unit chief, Sandeep Deshpande, told reporters Mr Chaudhary had 'insulted' Marathi and said, "If there is an attempt to insult Marathi, we will respond. We won't tolerate it." He said Mr Chaudhary's 'attitude' had prompted the attack, and that he expected non-Marathi speakers in the state to 'behave' themselves, and learn the language to avoid being attacked. Meanwhile, in a lukewarm and ambivalent response to the attack, senior opposition leader Aaditya Thackeray, who is Uddhav Thackeray's son, only said that Marathi "shouldn't be insulted".
