Barcelona have been up against it for the majority of their Champions League round of 16 first leg against Benfica after an early red card, but they have managed to find the opening goal at the Estadio da Luz.
It was Pau Cubarsi that was sent off after 22 minutes for a last man challenge on Vangelis Pavlidis, and ever since then, Barcelona have been up against it. However, they have now managed to open the scoring in Lisbon, with the goal coming from superstar winger Raphinha.

It is a wonderful strike from Raphinha, who scored the winning goal when the two teams met during the league phase. A poor pass from Antonio Silva was intercepted by the Brazilian, who fired into the far corner of the Benfica goal.
That could be a massive goal in this tie. Barcelona would have settled for a 0-0 draw to take back to the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys for next week's return leg, but now they have a lead to hold on to.

Out-of-favour Barcelona star handed surprise start in Spain vs France showdown

A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona was afforded something of a surprise starting berth in tonight's highly-anticipated meeting between France and Spain. The player in question? Clément Lenglet. Advertisement Stopper Lenglet of course spent this past season out on loan away from Barcelona. After quickly being deemed surplus to requirements by incoming Blaugrana head coach Hansi Flick, the former Sevilla man linked up with Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid for the duration of the campaign. And Lenglet went on to rediscover some of his very best form at the Metropolitano, en route to three goals and two assists across 34 appearances in all competitions. As much culminated in a recall to the France national team for the country's Nations League semi-final meeting with Spain this evening. It nevertheless came as a surprise, though, when Lenglet was thrown straight back in at the deep end by boss Didier Deschamps. Official: Barcelona star wins La Liga season award

A member of the attacking ranks at Barcelona has on Thursday secured for himself a fresh piece of individual silverware. This comes amid confirmation that Lamine Yamal has been named La Liga's Young Player of the Year for 2024/25. Advertisement Wide-man Lamine is of course fresh off what was nothing short of a spectacular individual campaign. From his berth on the right of new boss Hansi Flick's frontline, the Spanish international ripped opposing backlines apart week in and week out, courtesy of elite touch, dribbling and final ball. All told, in 55 appearances across all competitions, Lamine racked up a head-turning haul of 18 goals and 25 assists. Nine of these goals, alongside a division-best 15 assists, came in La Liga, decisive figures in Barcelona wrestling back Spanish football supremacy from arch rivals Real Madrid. And as alluded to above, on Thursday, such efforts have been aptly recognised. Barcelona star opens talks over contract termination

Negotiations over a potential contract termination have been kicked into gear between La Liga giants Barcelona, and the entourage of Clément Lenglet. That's according to Mundo Deportivo, who have this week provided an insight into the situation. Advertisement Defender Lenglet is for his part fresh off another loan spell away from Catalunya's capital, which saw the Frenchman spend the 2024/25 campaign with Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid. Both parties are keen to continue their relationship into next season, albeit with a catch. Atlético are said to have made clear to Barcelona that they are not willing to part with any kind of fee to bring Lenglet back to Madrid. As much has left the Camp Nou brass in a difficult situation, desperate to get their out-of-favour stopper's massive wage packet off the club's books, whilst also under pressure from Lenglet himself to find a route to part ways for good this summer. Advertisement Deco and co, in turn, have been left with little choice but to take desperate measures. As per a report from MD: 'Clément Lenglet and Barça are negotiating the termination of his contract, which expires in June 2027.' It now remains to be seen if common ground can be found… Conor Laird – GSFN
