Geagea urges authorities to seek 'actual state' after Barrack's remarks

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Sunday warned Lebanese authorities against 'continuing their hesitation and slow decisions as to the rise of an actual state in Lebanon,' following U.S. envoy Tom Barrack's latest remarks that Lebanon risks being swallowed by its neighbors.
Lebanese authorities 'would be held responsible for putting Lebanon the country and state in an existential danger once again,' Geagea warned.
'Barrack's statement is a call for action addressed to the Lebanese authorities and government and Lebanese authorities must take a decision as soon as possible and take the needed practical steps to turn Lebanon into an actual state, which alone would represent the guarantee to all Lebanese groups, or else they will keep Lebanon as an arena that can be violated once again,' the LF leader cautioned.
Barrack has warned in an interview with the UAE's The National newspaper that Lebanon risks being swallowed by regional powers unless it acts to address Hezbollah's arms and implement reforms.
'You have Israel on one side, you have Iran on the other, and now you have Syria manifesting itself so quickly that if Lebanon doesn't move, it's going to be Bilad Al Sham again,' he said, using the historical name for the Syria region.
'Syrians say Lebanon is our beach resort. So we need to move. And I know how frustrated the Lebanese people are. It frustrates me,' he added.
Barrack also said that the U.S., Saudi Arabia and Qatar are ready to help if Lebanon takes the lead.
As for Lebanon's response to his latest proposal, the envoy said: 'I thought it was responsive, very responsive,' while acknowledging that sticking points remain.

Bitcoin soars to new all-time high as US lawmakers focus on pro-crypto legislation

by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 July 2025, 17:44 Bitcoin continued its rapid climb and hit another all-time high Monday as U.S. lawmakers begin a week focused on passing pro-crypto legislation. Data from CoinMarketCap showed bitcoin climbed above $123,000 early Monday, up from about $108,000 only a week ago. The world's oldest and most popular cryptocurrency is currently the fifth most valuable asset class in the world at $2.4 trillion, giving it a higher market cap than Amazon. The enthusiasm for bitcoin comes as the U.S. House is set to take up several pieces of cryptocurrency-related legislation in what's been dubbed "crypto week" in Congress. Lawmakers have been under pressure from President Donald Trump and the big-spending crypto lobby to pass legislation quickly. That includes a bill passed last month by the Senate that would regulate a type of cryptocurrency known as stablecoins. The House is also set to take up a cryptocurrency market structure legislation that is far more sweeping. Trump, once a skeptic of the industry, has vowed in his second term to make the U.S. the global capital of crypto. Meanwhile, he and his family have moved aggressively into nearly every corner of the industry: mining operations, billion-dollar bitcoin purchases, a newly minted stablecoin and a Trump-branded meme coin. The crypto industry has rapidly become a major player in Washington after feeling unfairly targeted by the Biden administration. The industry spent huge amounts on last year's elections and has been spending heavily on lobbying and other influence efforts this year. Bitcoin has seen a significant rebound since April, when it briefly dipped below $75,000. Spot bitcoin ETFs are becoming increasingly popular since launching last year and several publicly traded companies have made using debt and stock sales to buy bitcoin their primary business strategy. Created in response to the 2008 financial crisis, bitcoin has taken a highly volatile path to mainstream acceptance. Its backers say the asset is like a "digital gold" that can act as a hedge against central bank and government malfeasance. Only 21 million bitcoins will ever be created. "Bitcoin's price is finally catching up to what's been building under the surface," said Adam Back, CEO of the crypto company Blockstream. "This is institutional demand aligning with bitcoin's fundamentals, and a fixed supply doing what it was designed to do."

"Netanyahu is skilled at thwarting one round of negotiations after another, and is unwilling to reach any agreement," the Palestinian militant group said in a statement on its Telegram channel.

When will US respond to Lebanese paper?

When will US respond to Lebanese paper? Lebanon is still waiting for the U.S. response to its 'dual' response to U.S. envoy Tom Barrack's paper, which according to ministerial sources is not expected to be very imminent, Asharq al-Awsat newspaper said. The U.S. response might 'take some additional days,' the sources added. 'The U.S. side is looking into the Lebanese response, which was not limited to the paper presented by President Joseph Aoun but also included the remarks submitted (separately) by Speaker Nabih Berri,' the sources said. 'Accordingly, it is looking into the differences between the two papers as well as the identical aspects, which might take some time,' the sources added. 'The Lebanese side is still waiting for a phone call from the U.S. ambassador to Beirut, who is supposed to relay the response which is mainly based on the removal of Hezbollah's arms according to what was agreed on in the latest meetings,' the sources went on to say. Lebanese presidential circles meanwhile told al-Joumhouria newspaper that the U.S. will respond to the official Lebanese response and also to "Hezbollah's proposals" at the end of this month. Barrack had said that he was very satisfied by the Lebanese response to the U.S. paper while warning that Lebanon risks being left behind as change sweeps other countries in the region.
