Journalist: Liverpool's new No.7 already impressing key figures at Anfield

Florian Wirtz Settling In at Liverpool with Premier League Goals in Sight Florian Wirtz, Liverpool's new record transfer and current No.7, is already showing why the club invested heavily to bring him in from Bayer Leverkusen. There is a maturity and calmness to the way he has integrated himself, both in terms of performances and mentality. After scoring in a pre-season match against Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, Wirtz made his Anfield debut during Liverpool's second summer victory over Athletic Club. He may be new to the Premier League, but he's clearly not overawed by the occasion. Speaking after the match, Wirtz offered insight into how he's adapted to life on Merseyside. 'I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me,' he said. 'Of course, I have to respect the position and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places. I have the freedom for this.' Wirtz has not taken long to look at home in a red shirt. He's already forging links with teammates and finding pockets of space with ease, something that will be vital when the league season gets underway. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying playing with these players. Every time it is getting a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going. I'm really enjoying the first weeks.' Looking Ahead to Domestic Glory There's no easing in for Wirtz. Liverpool's summer programme is complete, and now their focus turns to silverware. First up is the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley this Sunday. Following that, the Reds begin their title defence at Anfield with a match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 15 August. While Wirtz is yet to play in the Premier League, he's not shying away from what lies ahead. 'I have not played a match in the Premier League but I am looking forward to it and that is why I came,' he explained. 'To be honest, I don't know [how it will be]. There will be some differences to the German league but I think that is also something I can learn and make me better, so I am really looking forward to it.' He's been told what to expect. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me and I'm aware of that.' As any player who has transitioned from the Bundesliga will tell you, adapting to the Premier League is a steep learning curve. However, Wirtz appears ready for that challenge. He understands the need to graft as much off the ball as on it. 'The big challenge is to take the title again and it is the most difficult thing, so I try just to create chances and also work against the ball because I can also run a lot and I will try to bring this to the team,' he said. 'Then, with the ball, I hope I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations.' Photo: IMAGO Partnership with Ekitike Starting to Grow Another important piece of Liverpool's summer transfer business was the acquisition of Hugo Ekitike, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt. Like Wirtz, he has also impressed in early friendlies. The pair are not only adjusting to life in a new league but are doing so side by side, a factor that may help their transition. Wirtz spoke highly of his new teammate. 'He is a really good player. I enjoyed watching him at Frankfurt and I was really happy that he decided to come to us. In the training sessions already, he went well and also in the game we had some combinations that were good. I am really happy that I can play with him.' It's not just about football either. Wirtz emphasised the importance of off-the-pitch support. 'It is good that we have a few players that come at the same time, so we can connect a little bit and talk to each other about how we deal with it. That helps when you come to a new team.' When it comes to squad building, chemistry is often overlooked. But from experience, it's clear that strong off-field relationships can translate into effective performances. Arne Slot has added players who seem to understand that, and that may prove vital once the real business begins. Premier League Demands Will Test Wirtz's Mettle Liverpool are no longer a team with something to prove. They are defending champions. That comes with pressure and expectation. Wirtz, as a record transfer, will naturally have eyes on him, but he seems up to the task. He's arrived not just to play his game, but to improve the team. Slot has a player in Wirtz who understands the need to contribute all over the pitch. He runs, tackles, presses and creates. It's exactly what is needed from a modern midfielder at the top level. With the right environment and the right manager, Wirtz has every chance of becoming one of the league's standout performers. He's settled in quickly, but there's still a long road ahead. He knows the expectations, and from all early signs, he's ready to meet them head-on.

Reading Supporters' Trust 'disappointed' as club appoint gambling partners

Supporters Trust at Reading [STAR] have hit out at the club's decision to appoint an official betting sponsor for the new season. The relationship between gambling and football is something which has proved controversial in recent years, akin to the relationship between tobacco and alcoholic sponsors in other sports such as snooker and rugby. Premier League clubs have voted to withdraw gambling sponsorships on front of shirts as of next season, although there are currently no limitations for sleeve sponsors or advertising hoardings. Last week, Reading confirmed a new partnership with PricedUp, a UK-based online sports betting and gaming brand which will feature on training wear for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons. The club state: "As part of the agreement, PricedUp will collaborate with the club to deliver exclusive offers and rewards designed to engage and benefit Royals supporters, while also working closely with Reading FC to promote and support responsible gambling practices." However, STAR have admitted that they are 'disappointed' with the decision. "We were as disappointed as I'm sure a lot of fans were, to see that we have a new betting sponsor," Chair Sarah Turner commented in her newsletter. " [It is]Not ideal, and I'm sure we'd rather a sponsor from other areas. "I think we have to be pragmatic and think that the club are working on improving things and the costs are huge. We have banged on about wanting to be sustainable - and that means using income from sponsorship. "It is, however, positive that the press release mentions that PricedUp will be working closely with Reading FC to promote and support responsible gambling practices and we look forward to seeing how this develops." Some supporters have also been less than impressed with the decision, although many have gone on to praise the club's pragmatism. Tim Kilpatrick, Head of Commercial at Reading, commented: 'We are naturally pleased to welcome PricedUp as our Official Betting Partner – in what is an important financial agreement for the club. To work with a UK company, who are forging their own story in their industry, aligns with our own growth ambitions and we're looking forward to supporting each other in reaching our goals.'

Former Swindon youngster makes move to rival after trial period

Former Swindon Town academy player Miles Obodo has joined Reading after he was not offered a professional contract at the Nigel Eady County Ground. Obodo left Swindon at the end of last season at the expiry of his scholarship with the club, and has spent the summer looking to stay within the game, having been on trial at Brighton and then Reading, where he has earned a contract. The 18-year-old was highly rated by Swindon, and was a player Ian Holloway was a big fan of as a prospect, but with the lack of an under-21s team, the decision was taken to allow him to move on. Much like Josh Keyes last summer, he has found himself moving up the ladder within an academy set up. Obodo was a big part of Swindon's run to the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals in 2023/24 and made his senior debut against Bradford City in October 2023, becoming the sixth-youngest player to make a league appearance for the club at 16 years, seven months, and 19 days. The striker has signed a one-year deal with Reading to be part of the under-21s team to get the chance to keep developing after spending part of last season on loan at Marlow.
