Teenager and two adults killed in crash on M5 with motorway closed by police
Three people have died after a crash on the M5 last night.
Two adults in their 40s and a teenage child were killed when the white BMW they were travelling came off the northbound carriageway in South Gloucestershire.
A second child is in hospital with serious injuries.
The motorway is closed in both directions between junctions 14 for Falfield and 13 for Stroud.
Inspector Mark Vicary said: 'Our thoughts first and foremost are with the child in hospital and loved ones who have received the most awful news overnight.
'A specially-trained officer will provide them with support at this difficult time.'
He added: 'Emergency services have worked throughout the night at what has proved to be a very complex scene. They have worked diligently and professionally to try to save life in the most tragic of circumstances.
'It has been necessary to keep the road closures in place at this time to enable further collision investigation work during daylight hours. More Trending
'Vehicle recovery work still needs to be completed and National Highways will need to assess the carriageway and make any necessary repairs before it will be safe to reopen the motorway.
'As a result the M5 remains closed this morning and we estimate it will need to stay shut in both directions for the next few hours, however we are doing all we can to reopen it as soon as possible.
'We appreciate this closure is causing delays and disruption to the public, particularly at the end of the half-term break.
'But given the severity of this distressing incident, we hope the public can understand the reasons why this is necessary and ask them to consider alternative travel plans.'

Man in court charged with rape and deliberately infecting victims with HIV
An accused rapist has appeared in court charged with deliberately infecting men with HIV. Adam Hall, 42, faces five allegations of rape in relation to five male victims and seven further counts of GBH relating to the transmission of the virus. He has further been charged with two counts of controlling or coercive behaviour and one count of supplying a Class B drug, GHB. Hall, currently of no fixed address but previously of the Washington area, was remanded in custody following an appearance at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. He will next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on July 2. Detective Chief Inspector Emma Smith said: 'Following a significant investigation, an individual has been charged with multiple counts of rape and other extremely serious offences. 'We recognise the nature of the charges may raise concern and anxiety within our communities. We would encourage anyone who does have concerns or believes they have information which is relevant to this case to come forward. 'With criminal proceedings now active we would also remind people that it is important to avoid speculation, both online and in our communities, as this could impact the case.' Boy, 16, dies after car swerving from e-bike crashes into him

The 16-year-old boy was walking along Staniford Road, Sheffield, when he was struck by the car yesterday afternoon. He was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The boy's family has been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers. Before smashing into him, the grey Audi hit an 18-year-old man, who was riding an electric bike on the road. The cyclist remains in the hospital for treatment. Footage shows the moment before the car and the e-bike rider smash near the kerb, with both appearing to travel on the wrong direction. After hitting the cyclist, the car then zooms towards the unsuspecting boy on the pavement. Shortly after, the car is spotted driving away with its front damaged. The emergency services rushed to the scene at about 4.50pm after reports of the crash. The Audi didn't stop at the scene, it is understood. Detectives are investigating the collision, and two people were arrested last night. A man and a woman, both in their 40s, were taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender. Detectives asked people not share footage of the crash on social media as it could be distressing for the boy's family. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles said: 'We know that this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community, and tonight our thoughts are with the boys loved ones following this tragic incident. 'Our investigation into what happened is continuing at pace and we currently have a scene in place on Staniforth Road as we continue to piece together the circumstances. 'We are aware of speculation being shared online, as well as footage of the incident, and we ask members of the public to withhold from speculating or sharing footage which may cause distress to the boy's family.
