Retiring Diogo Jota's Jersey Was Incredible Gesture From Liverpool: Stephen Warnock

Former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock honoured the late Diogo Jota's legacy and praised the club for retiring his No. 20 shirt, calling the decision 'something that has been echoed globally as the right thing to do. In honour and memory of Jota across all levels, Liverpool retired squad number 20. Jota and his brother Andre Silva passed away in a car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora. 'When you think of Diogo Jota, the constant smile he played with is exactly what you want to see from footballers — someone who truly enjoyed every day on the pitch. He never took his football for granted, especially being at Liverpool. "Jota understood the struggles he overcame since childhood to reach the very top, and he genuinely appreciated the career he was given. That showed in every single game he played," Warnock said on JioHotstar. "The 'Forever 20' will appear on Liverpool's shirts, with the club retiring the number as well. This leaves a legacy — it was an incredible gesture from Liverpool Football Club, and the decision has been echoed globally as the right thing to do," he added. Warnock further discussed Liverpool's approach to replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold's creative presence. The 26-year-old England international has signed for Real Madrid, leaving Liverpool after 354 appearances and 23 goals for the club, as well as lifting eight major honours alongside his teammates, which consist of two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. "What was absolutely vital for Liverpool, knowing they would be without Trent Alexander-Arnold, was figuring out how to replace that creativity. Yes, he is a right-back, but he so often steps into midfield—sometimes a match is flat, and he's the one who unlocks it with a killer pass or a moment of vision. You need more players like that. With his absence, you recreate that by bringing in someone higher up the pitch who can provide that kind of spark. "Frimpong coming in at right-back—I don't see it as just a traditional right-back role, but more of a utility position. And with Kerkez on the left, I've watched him for a couple of years and believe he's the ideal Liverpool type of player," said Warnock. The 43-year-old also addressed questions about Mohamed Salah's longevity and drive, saying, "There will always be questions about whether he can maintain his performance at his age, and if he still has the hunger and desire. But you can already see that he absolutely does. That hunger and desire are what make him elite—one of the best players in world football. "No matter how wealthy he is, how well he's paid, or how well he's looked after, it's about delivering week after week. I believe he'll be back and scoring a hat-trick of goals again."

Chelsea to give share of FIFA Club World Cup bonuses to families of Diogo Jota, Andre Silva

President Donald Trump looks on as Chelsea's Reece James (24) lifts the trophy following the Club World Cup final soccer match between Chelsea and PSG in East Rutherford, N.J., Sunday, July 13, 2025. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Chelsea have allocated $15.5 million (£11.4m) in Club World Cup bonuses to be distributed among players, with a portion being donated to the family of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. The decision came after Chelsea's victory in FIFA's expanded tournament, where they defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in July. The bonus fund will be distributed equally among the players who represented Enzo Maresca's side during the tournament. Each portion amounts to more than $500,000. The decision to include a payment to Jota's family was made jointly between the club and players. This gesture follows the passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who played for Portuguese club Penafiel, in the Spanish province of Zamora on July 3, ten days before Chelsea's Club World Cup final victory. Liverpool Football Club has undertaken several initiatives to honour Jota's memory. The club has designated a permanent tribute to the Portuguese forward, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances during his tenure at Liverpool. For the 2025-26 season, Liverpool players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets. This tribute acknowledges Jota's significant contribution to the club since his arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! La Liga: Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen validated as long-term injury, paves way for Joan Garcia's registration

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been reinstated as Barcelona captain after a public social media post clarifying his injury status. (Image: Instagram) Barcelona announced Wednesday the long-term injury validation of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen by the Spanish league, meaning the club can register new signing Joan Garcia without breaking financial fair play rules. "LaLiga's Medical Committee has ruled that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury meets the long-term injury criteria established by current regulations," Barcelona said in a statement on their website. "The club will proceed tomorrow (Thursday) to immediately formalise the registration of player Joan Garcia." After two seasons marred by serious injuries, Barcelona captain Ter Stegen underwent back surgery last month. However, the 33-year-old had refused up until last Friday to release his medical details as Barcelona tried to have him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury, which would allow them to deduct part of his pay from their official wage bill. The Catalan club had planned to use the German's long-term absence to register their new recruits while remaining within the financial fair play rules. In addition to the recruitment of 24-year-old shotstopper Garcia, Barcelona extended the contract of veteran Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny this summer.
