Brendan Rodgers declares Celtic Champions League ready as boss delivers Kieran Tierney injury update

The Hoops grabbed a Flag Day win over St Mirren after a late strike from sub Luke McCowan at Parkhead
Brendan Rodgers has vowed Celtic will be ready for the Champions League – despite an opening day scare against St Mirren.

The Hoops needed a late Luke McCowan strike to avoid the party going flat on Flag Day at Parkhead.

Celts struggled to find a cutting edge against stubborn Saints but eventually found a way through to ensure a winning start.

Rodgers insisted he was delighted with the display but admitted he's still looking to strengthen his squad in the coming days and weeks.
Defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey was at Celtic Park on Sunday and his loan move from Man City will be confirmed on Monday.
Rodgers is desperate for more firepower but he is adamant his men will be firing for the Champions League play-off in a fortnight.
Celts will learn who they will face in the group stage showdown in Monday's draw in Nyon.
And Rodgers said: 'We'll be ready for the games. Whenever they come, we'll be ready. The players are working very hard. They are always tense games. But we're in a good place and we'll take that game on when it comes.
'I'm feeling really good. We've had a great, really, really good pre-season. The players are shaping up very well and are working very hard.

'There's real spirit and solidarity here in the team. So we look forward to that.
"We know whoever we get, it's going to be tough, but it will also be tough for them. And we will accept whatever challenge comes.'
Rodgers is thrilled to bolster his backline with the arrival of Simpson-Pusey to compete alongside centre backs Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty and Liam Scales.

He said: 'It's just about improving. There's areas that we want to improve in the forward line. That's something that we hope we can do over these remaining weeks.
'We're still waiting for clearance on that one (Simpson-Pusey). But he's up here. And I think obviously once it's definite, then it'll be announced. But yes, he's up here ready for the move.

'That area of the team is always so important. Any team, your centre-halves need to be dominant and we've got really good options there now.
'Your centre-halves need to be strong at Celtic. Sometimes you're not doing a great deal. You're stood on the halfway line and you're attacking a lot of the time. But you also need to be able to defend space.
'We knew that Kieran (Tierney) and maybe even Ali (Johnston) because he's only back for a few weeks, we knew Kieran was going to have to come out at some point.

'So, Austin on the bench, move Scalesy to left- back. I thought he was fantastic in the game. He was dominant and won headers against two big strikers.'
Tierney caused concern when he limped off with 35 minutes to go but Rodgers revealed there was no serious injury.
The full back impressed on his first competitive start since his return to Celts and the manager said: ' It's brilliant for him.
"I'm so happy for him. He's got a great reception and you see the qualities that he has.
"He had a wee bit of cramp at the end. He hasn't played a lot of football and that's part of managing him through this period. now that he's back.
"Build him and his fitness. But yes, just his qualities, his crossing ability and his one-v-one ability. I'm really pleased for him."

Man Utd have gone from ‘bust by Christmas' warning to £200m splurge topped by Sesko – how has Ratcliffe masterminded it?

Of course, it's not always sensible to compare and time will tell, but Jurgen Klopp's prolific front line of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah netted 46 during their title-winning 2020 campaign. While the ENTIRE United squad scored just 49 combined in the Prem last term as they recorded the club's lowest ever Premier League finish from 15th in the table. But Slovenian hotshot Sesko, 22, chose a move to Old Trafford before their offer of £65.1m plus a further £8.7m in add-ons even came in. READ MORE SPORTS NEWS LOST HIS COL Chelsea star Colwill to miss almost entire season as he undergoes ACL surgery United's approach followed a club-record bid from Newcastle, who have the richest owners in the world, were willing to pay more in wages and have Champions League football to look forward to this season. But how has Ruben Amorim's side, who aren't in Europe at all, been able to splash the cash again months after part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed poverty? Ratcliffe revealed that there was potential for the club to go "bust by Christmas' without massive cost-cutting measures as 450 staff were made redundant and fancy free lunches were scrapped. SunSport explains how United can afford Sesko - who is set to become the club's fourth most expensive signing ever. SunSport's chief reporter Martin Lipton previews the season ahead for Man Utd... with confidence in the air But the trio's staggered payments will reduce the immediate financial impact on the balance sheets, allowing them to stay within the PSR limits that restrict losses to £105m over a three-year period. Cunha was bought before PSR's cut-off date on June 30, so the Brazilian's arrival goes into the 2024/2025 financial year. Marcus Rashford's season-long loan move to Barcelona, which has an option to buy, has saved £14m in wages despite the lack of a transfer fee, having earned in excess of £325,000-a-week. And the sales of former players Alvaro Carreras, Anthony Elanga and Maxi Oyedele have also banked United more than £20m in sell-on fees. United also earned 100 per cent profit from the sales of Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay last summer, and will aim to sell several other unwanted players before this window closes, including Alejandro Garnacho. The club hopes Chelsea will pay at least £50million for the 21-year-old Argentine winger. Meanwhile, Stamford Bridge chiefs owe United £5m for going back on their obligation to buy Jadon Sancho after his decent loan stint last season. United are desperate to sell Sancho, 25, this summer, as they're now back stuck with his full £300,000 wage packet. The departures of other 'Bomb Squad' members Antony and Tyrell Malacia will help balance the books even more. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport: "Some of the scare stories were perhaps a bit overblown. "Man Utd are not as successful as a business as they would like to be, but they are still successful. For example, their wage bill is around half of their income, which is very good by Premier League standards." Manchester United PLC lost £131m in the 2023-24 financial year, with a lot coming in interest, and the costs of the Ineos takeover - which doesn't count towards PSR. United's immense global brand and massive fanbase make it a commercial powerhouse, generating significant revenue from broadcasting, sponsorships, and merchandise sales. In June, the club revealed an annual core profit forecast of £180m-£190m, up from an earlier projection of £145m-£160m and a £20m reduction in wages from the same point in 2024. The total revenue was £160.5m, up from £136.7m in the same period, with matchday, commercial and Prem broadcast streams all rising. According to The Athletic, United could lose an estimated £141m in 2025-26 without incurring a breach of PSR. At the end of April, the club, who have angered fans by raising ticket prices, paid off £50m of their existing revolving credit facilities (RCFs). That has given them extra £140m borrowing scope this summer - but in turn, extra interest costs could be a factor down the line. 10 Manchester United PLC lost £131m in the 2023-24 financial year Credit: getty The shock role of Red Football Ltd. Red Football Ltd is a key subsidiary company within the United ownership structure. The Glazer family used this UK-based company as their acquisition vehicle to purchase the club in 2005. And according to The Athletic, United's PSR is based on the accounts of Red Football Ltd rather than the publicly listed entity, Manchester United plc. This distinction is huge because the accounts of Red Football Ltd often show smaller losses than those of the PLC, which is registered under the New York Stock Exchange. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we've inherited those things and have to sort that out." Sir Jim Ratcliffe This is partly due to the way loans and costs are structured within the larger corporate group. United's pre-tax loss at plc-level was a whopping £130.7m during the 2023-24 season alone, but Red Football Ltd's was just £36.2m. According to Premier League's rules, clubs can only submit the accounts of a UK-registered company for testing against PSR. By using the accounts of the subsidiary for the PSR calculation, the club can have more "wiggle room" to spend on transfers and wages while staying within the Prem's financial limits. This accounting structure has been cited as one of the reasons the club has been able to secure new signings despite reported financial concerns. 10 Sir Jim Ratcliffe's brutal cuts over the last few months have contributed to United's warchest Credit: Getty Ratcliffe was talking about cash A lack of free cash is what Ratcliffe was referring to in his bombshell 'no money left' interview in March. The Ineos chief revealed that United still owed transfer instalment money for Andre Onana, Sancho, Antony, Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund. The 72-year-old billionaire said: "These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we've inherited those things and have to sort that out." Cash flow needs to be more carefully managed at Old Trafford. But a combination of recent cuts to staff and the club's continued ability to borrow means there are avenues available to them. The redundancies do look brutal, but that is part of the Ineos business model, they have done that at other companies. United can spend without fear of PSR breaches, although the spending on talent now is designed to return them to Champions League football soon. 10 The debt Manchester United will accrue for their proposed new stadium won't be included in PSR calculations Credit: MANCHESTER UNITED What about the new stadium? United may struggle to fund their proposed new stadium, with the club responsible for paying the £2billion needed for the ground itself. Although Ratcliffe has received government backing for the Regeneration Project surrounding the Trafford Park area, it is unclear how much funding they will provide. But the stadium will likely end up costing more than £2billion by the end of the project and 100,000 seats seems ambitious. While stadium redevelopment plans will involve taking on borrowed debt, this debt won't be included in PSR calculations.

James Forrest reveals his Celtic priority and why he won't ever close the door on Scotland

He's won 26 major honours at Parkhead and picked up 39 caps for his country to date James Forrest insists he'll never close the door on playing for Scotland and the chance to fulfil his World Cup dream. ‌ Celtic's most decorated servant has done almost all there is to do in the game having lifted an astonishing 26 major honours at Parkhead. ‌ Capped 39 times for his country, he was also named in both of Steve Clarke's Scotland squads for the European Championships in 2021 and 2024. ‌ One of the few achievements still to be ticked off the 34-year-old's bucket list, however, is a World Cup appearance. Clarke's team will kick off their bid to reach next summer's North American finals when they face both Denmark and Belarus in next month's double header. ‌ And while it's now 14 months since his last international appearance, Forrest is refusing to rule out playing a part this time round. He said: "I spoke to Steve Clarke a couple of times at the start of last season but then I got a really bad injury in December which kept me out for a few months. 'But the main thing for me has always been making sure I'm playing well for Celtic and then if Scotland comes along, great. ‌ 'But no, I've not spoken to Steve this season. I just want to do well for Celtic in the games coming up and then we'll just kind of see from there. 'When I had the conversation with Steve last year, it was a good one. It was after I'd gone to the Euros and didn't play. He said if he needed me, then he'd give me the call and it was just kind of left like that. 'So as I said, it's always kind of open and I would never shut the door." ‌ Next year's World Cup will be the biggest football extravaganza FIFA have ever thrown after expanding the tournament to 48 teams. And Forrest would hate to miss out. "I think as with any player, you want to play in the top competitions,' he said. 'You want to play Champions League, you want to play for your national team. ‌ 'Obviously I've done a lot of stuff already in my career. 'But the World Cup is at the end of the season, there's qualifiers and that as well, so I don't want to think too far." ‌ But Forrest believes he can still make a major contribution for club and country, even though he's now reached veteran territory. He said: 'The sports scientists, the manager, they look at training every day and see that when I come on at the weekend, I made a contribution. I want to keep performing for Celtic and I think I can keep offering that." Forrest missed out on what would have been a 27th winners' medal in May when Aberdeen crashed the Hoops Treble party to snatch the Scottish Cup. ‌ But Forrest insists revenge won't be on his mind as the Premiership and League Cup winners head to Pittodrie this weekend. 'The cup final was hard. I've had a couple of those disappointments at the start of my career but then we went on to have a really good spell. 'It shows you how well all the different teams over the years have done, winning and being so successful. 'But Aberdeen are one of the best teams in Scotland and I think every time you play them, there's a rivalry there anyway. 'You go to Pittodrie and we all know it's a hard game, so I don't think we'll look much into the cup final. 'It's a new season and we want to get off to a good start and just keep the momentum going, and hopefully get another three points."

My winner sparked crazy Celtic scenes when Hoops faced Kazakh side 12 years ago, I'd love to feel that buzz again

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JAMES FORREST fondly remembers it as one of his biggest highs. A feeling of pure elation. And the wee man, now 34, is desperate for another fix. His winner against Shakhtar Karagandy back in the 2013 play-off was one of the greatest nights of his career. With Kazakhstan opposition in Kairat Almaty potentially standing in the way of Brendan Rodgers' side and a place in the league phase, Forrest would love nothing more than another hit of that same adrenaline rush. The Hoops veteran recalled: 'It was massive. 'The fans that night were really good because we were 2-0 down from the first leg and we came back here. I remember we scored in the first half and the place just erupted. 'That's what will be good when we get our game here as well. 'The fans will push the boys because they want Champions League and everyone involved in the club will want it as well. 'It was amazing when I scored the third goal. The feeling is just hard to describe. 'But I'd say that's why you keep playing. You want more because it's addictive, the feeling you have with the players at moments like that. I'm a Celtic-daft bride – I called off the big day but I still celebrated in my wedding dress at Parkhead 'The buzz you get from it, I don't get it with anything else. It really is addictive. 'I've had so many highs with Celtic. But when you do experience stuff like that, it does make you think, 'I want more of that'. 'You go away for pre-season, you're working five, six weeks, doing double sessions. 'You're playing in games that maybe no one's watching or having training sessions where no one's there. 'But then it all becomes worth it when you get moments like that, 100 per cent.' It's either Kairat or Slovan Bratislava that Celts will have to beat to reach the league phase. Kairat take a 1-0 lead to Bratislava for the second leg of the third qualifying round clash. 5 Celtic manager Neil Lennon (2nd from left) celebrates with his team Credit: Scottish News and Sport But it would be far easier for Rodgers and his squad — logistically at least — if the Slovaks rather than the Kazakhs won through to the play-off. Otherwise, it's an exhausting 7,000-mile round trip to the most eastern point on Uefa's map. Forrest has made that trek a few times with club and county, and knows first hand how tough it can be. He added: 'We've been there three times with Celtic, plus I've been there with Scotland too. 'It is difficult because you probably need to go two days before the game just to adjust because of how far away it is. 'But whatever team we get, it will be two difficult games. "We've got enough experience with international players who know about the travel and stuff like that. 'These away games can be a bit cup style as well. 5 'But then Celtic Park can be really intimidating for the visiting team too. 'I really liked the new format of the Champions League that we had last season. 'So hopefully we can get through the qualifiers, and then look to see who we get in the league phase and where we get to play. 'Every player, coach, fan, they want to be involved in the Champions League, so hopefully we can do that.' Forrest is soaking up every minute of being a Hoops star these days as he appreciates they won't last forever. He maybe doesn't start as many games as he once did. But the winger knows the importance of the job he is often given to finish them. Just like he did when he stepped off the bench to replace Yang Hyun-jun in the opening weekend Premiership win over St Mirren. 5 It is a difficult place to go at the best of times Credit: Kenny Ramsay - The Sun Glasgow Forrest said: 'You want to keep being involved, you want to keep being part of it. 'But I feel as though a couple of years ago when they changed it and you could make five subs, it's just more known that wingers and attackers will change more. 'Having Ange Postecoglou before and the gaffer here as well the first time, they want to keep the same intensity for the full 90 minutes. It is a difficult position and we have got a lot of players who can play there. 'If you look back through the last couple of years, I don't think many players other than Daizen Maeda would play the majority of games and most of the minutes. 'But I feel as though the position has changed loads. 'Ange used to do it quite a lot as well, and the gaffer's changed it a bit here too. 'With five subs, it's been more normal that they want freshness in the legs. 'You're maybe not starting the game, but you're going to be the one that sees it out. 'You've seen it as well, the number of times you can start, play 70 minutes, not have much of the ball, not much of a game. 'Then somebody can come on for 20 minutes and score, then all everyone talks about is the one that's played the 20. I feel as though I've been in both positions. 'Over the season, you want to be a part of both. 'It's good that you have a big squad and the manager can change because we do have a lot of games. 'You want to play as much as you can but I'm getting older as well 'It's good for the coaches that they know they have got players to swap.' Forrest has also revealed he's not given up on his Scotland career, insisting he will always be available to Steve Clarke for a call-up if required. He added: 'I had the conversation with him last year after I went to the Euros and didn't play. 'If he needed me then he'd give me the call and it was just kind of left like that. 'So it's been left open. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
