McMenamin: Luka Doncic is serious about winning with Lakers
This Saturday, Luka Doncic will be eligible to sign a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers of up to four years and $229 million. According to one report, that is exactly what he plans to do before heading overseas to take part in the EuroBasket tournament later this summer. But even if he signs that extension as soon as he's allowed to, it wouldn't automatically mean he would be perfectly happy with the Lakers moving forward. Doncic wants to win championships, and he recently said he wants to be known as "the guy who brought championships" to Los Angeles. Dave McMenamin of ESPN said that Doncic's aim with the Lakers is to win every season. 'This isn't signing away to the Lakers and saying, 'OK, you have my commitment and I'll have some patience here.' It's 'I want to win this year, I want to win the subsequent year. So long as my name is signed to a piece of paper saying I am a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, I expect to be in a position to raise banners at the Arena.'' The superstar, of course, hasn't won an NBA championship yet. He's just one calendar year removed from reaching the NBA Finals for the first time before the Dallas Mavericks were slammed by the Boston Celtics in five games. After he was traded to the Lakers nearly six months ago, they claimed the third seed in the Western Conference, only to lose in the first round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. Doncic, who has been criticized for being fat and out of shape, has transformed his body since, and he could be poised for an MVP-caliber season.

Baltimore Ravens TE Charlie Kolar looking to step up with Isaiah Likely injured
With Baltimore Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely out for several weeks with a fracture in his foot, Charlie Kolar is preparing for his opportunity. Kolar, a 2022 fourth-round draft pick by the Ravens out of Iowa State, hasn't had very many chances, playing behind Pro Bowl tight end Mark Andrews and Likely, who is an emerging playmaker. in his professional football career, he has 20 receptions for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He had 313 receiving yards and a score in 2024. Kolar has primarily been used on special teams and as an extra blocker. "I want to keep expanding on my role, keep playing better, the snaps I'm giving, and keep earning more," Kolar said on Wednesday, "We talked about earned confidence of seeing yourself do it." Kolar said that he's ready to step up and build a connection with quarterback Lamar Jackson. He will likely get his opportunities during the preseason, which begins at home on August 7 in Baltimore. The Ravens will also have a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts on August 5. "It's good to have that film, and you can continue [to grow], but it's so important to, the only thing that matters is the next play," Kolar said. "And so, it's important to look back, learn from it and take that confidence into the next year, but still keep getting better." Before Likely got injured in practice on Tuesday, Kolar was listed as third on the tight end depth chart, ahead of Zaire Mitchell-Paden. Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said on Wednesday that Isaiah Likely will have surgery on his foot and he will miss multiple weeks. The season opener isn't until Sept. 7 in Buffalo, and there is a chance that Likely could return early in the season. "He's going to have surgery," Harbaugh said. "I think the timeline I saw actually was accurate, on the timeline that was reported. So we've got a shot to get him back there right away, early. We'll see." Harbaugh added, "It was early in camp, and it's not one of those major-type of deals. But it's something. It's multiple weeks." Likely, heading into his fourth season in Baltimore out of Coastal Carolina, caught 42 passes for 477 yards with six touchdowns last season. Tight end Mark Andrews caught 11 touchdown passes in 2024.

Chris Duncan explains how ATT teammate Mateusz Rebecki's 'bad move' led to UFC on ESPN 71
LAS VEGAS – Chris Duncan was glad to accept the offer to face Mateusz Rebecki at UFC on ESPN 71 despite their extensive history as training partners at American Top Team. Typically, Duncan (13-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) wouldn't have been keen to move forward with this situation, but it's different. He claims Rebecki (20-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) once offered to fight him on short notice in early 2023, just as they began their time as teammates in South Florida. Duncan hasn't forgotten that, so when UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby offered him Rebecki in the co-main event slot of Saturday's card at UFC Apex (ESPN, ESPN+), he felt it was within his right to take it. "I think it's a bad move on him, but I'm happy to do it," Duncan told MMA Junkie at Wednesday's UFC on ESPN 71 media day. "I think he's a very respectful opponent. He was super respectful to me in the gym. We're just going to go out there and clash and I'm going to show him I'm the better fighter. "It's just unfortunate we train under the same gym, but I'm just very fortunate American Top Team were so professional in regard to keeping us separate in our training in stuff like that. It is what it is. I'm going to make his wish come true." Duncan knows what is required to get his hand raised, and said he needs to be sharp defensively against someone with Rebecki's level of aggression. "We all know he comes forward," Duncan said. "He's a brawler. I think he's going to try to wrestle me a little bit, to be honest. It takes no genius to know he's going to come forward with some heat, so have to make sure to not get caught, getting caught in stupid places. I'm looking forward to it. He's a great opponent for me."
