Dia
got noticed only after its OTT run. That's when other industries began noticing me too. So yes, I do understand its power.'
Does she see OTT as the future? 'Partially,' she reflects. 'The theatre experience can't be replicated at home. But we have to evolve with the times. I'm aligning with the present.'

felt fresh—a new format, a new schedule, a new mindset. 'When director Ramesh Indira approached me, he didn't even mention it was a web series,' she recalls. 'He simply said, 'Come hear a narration.' I was on my toes. He's such a phenomenal actor—and what many don't realise is how unique he is as a director too.'
It was Indira's sensitivity towards women characters that drew Kushee in. 'When I heard his vision for
Ayyana Mane
, I knew it would be creative, well-planned, and deeply rehearsed. And knowing it's ZEE5's first Kannada web original only added to the excitement.'
Set in 1990s Chikkamagaluru, the series is a crime thriller about a joint family living in a bungalow. Three daughters-in-law have died under mysterious circumstances. When Kushee's character becomes the fourth bride in the family, she sets out to uncover the truth. Produced by Shruthi Naidu, the series blends suspense with deep-rooted family emotions. The cast also includes Akshaya Naik, Manasi Sudhir, and Vijay Shobharaj.
The story also touches upon the fictional worship of Kondayya Daiva—a spiritual force inspired by Daiva traditions of coastal Karnataka. 'This is not a
Kantara
copy,' Kushee clarifies. 'It's a completely different tale, rooted in another region and culture.'
Shot in just 20 days, the series combines mystery, thrill, and emotional resonance. 'I play a soft-spoken girl, newly married into a large household. Like many women of the '90s, she's raised to adjust and stay quiet. But she evolves. She grows stronger. She starts to speak up.'
To prepare, Kushee immersed herself in the era. 'The early '90s aren't well documented, so I turned to old films—Sudharani, Soundarya—to study their body language. I spoke to my

and
ajji
about their early married days. My mom grew up in a joint family and gave me amazing insights.'
On set, Indira's clarity was a huge asset. 'He's a true visionary. He watched every scene with a sharp eye. If something didn't click, he would rework it instantly. I just had to follow. That kind of creative guidance is rare.'
Even as she makes her OTT debut, Kushee hasn't left cinema behind. 'I have five films at different stages,' she says with pride. 'There's

Naveen Reddy: I believe emotion is bigger than action
Naveen Reddy B may be just one film old as a director—with Khaki marking his debut—but he brings over 20 years of experience in the Kannada film industry. Now, with his second film Maadeva set to release on June 6, he hopes this marks a defining moment in his journey: from an assistant director working behind the scenes to a storyteller confidently bringing his own vision to the screen. 'I've worked with many directors and across all kinds of films,' says Naveen. 'Luck and time need to meet. Until then, you evolve.' Unlike Khaki, Naveen has written the story of Maadeva himself. The film follows the life of a hangman, portrayed by Vinod Prabhakar, but according to the director, it is not about the technicalities of capital punishment. 'It's not about procedures. It's about the hangman's emotional life—his family, his struggles, his connection with society. It's brutal, yes, but also deeply human,' Naveen explains. Vinod, known for his image as an action star, has been given a multi-dimensional role in this film. 'I believe emotion is universal—bigger than action. In the last 40 minutes, audiences won't see Vinod Prabhakar—they'll see Maadeva,' he says confidently. Each actor was cast with intent. Sonal Monteiro plays a layered female lead, while Srinagar Kitty, Shruti, and Malashree bring complex shades to their characters. 'Shruti was surprised I approached her for a negative role. Malashree has a pivotal part that involves action. Even Cockroach Sudhir, though his screen time is brief, plays a vital role.' Vinod's physical transformation was meticulously crafted, including wearing lenses throughout the shoot. 'That alone was a challenge—shooting day after day with lenses. But it helped to show a completely different side of him.' Maadeva releases alongside Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, but Naveen remains unfazed. 'Yes, Kamal sir has a huge fan base, but in the end, it's about the story. Today, there's a shortage of strong Kannada films. Audiences are eager for meaningful local cinema. Diganth: At times, we should go left when life pulls us right
Diganth is no stranger to curveballs, both in life and in cinema. A career marked by experimental subjects, physical injuries, and a quiet refusal to fit into mainstream moulds has made him one of Kannada cinema's most consistent risk-takers. And his upcoming film, Edagaiye Apagathakke Karana (EAK), releasing on June 13, might just be his most personal yet. The title, for Diganth, is more than a clever phrase — it's almost a mirror. 'The word in the title — Apagathake, which means an accident, instantly hits,' Diganth admits. 'It points to different points in my life. I've had my fair share of those... accidents that change everything.' Directed by debutant Samarth Kadkol, EAK explores a subject rarely touched in cinema: the world of left-handers. The film weaves sharp social commentary with moments of black comedy, touching on identity, conditioning, and the subtle struggles of being different. 'The moment I heard the concept, I said yes. A film about left-handers? That's rare,' says Diganth. 'Only 7–10% of the world is left-handed. However, in our society, many are forced to switch as children, simply because it's perceived as wrong. I've watched a lot of global cinema — Hollywood, Korean, world films — and I've never seen this subject explored.' Though a right-hander himself, Diganth fully committed to portraying a left-handed character — a process that was physically and mentally daunting. 'Samarth told me — the minute I step on set, no right hand. So I started eating with my left, scrolling my phone left-handed, brushing... everything,' he says. 'But 40 years of being right-handed doesn't change overnight.'
