I visited the seaside town with the UK's best fish and chips – they're worth the price and it was like being in the Med

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WITH the sun beating down, there is often nothing better than a leisurely beach stroll with a good portion of fish and chips after. And this weekend, I did just that - but in the seaside town with the best fish and chips in the country. 6 The UK's best fish and chip shop is located in Torquay, Devon - often dubbed the English Riviera Credit: Cyann Fielding 6 Opposite the spot is Torquay's marina and a long, stretching sandy beach Credit: Cyann Fielding 6 Pier Point has both a takeaway chippy and a sit-down restaurant Credit: Facebook Pier Point in Torquay, Devon was recently named as the UK's best fish and chip shop by the Fishermen's Mission Awards. The Fishermen's Mission charity fights poverty in UK fishing communities by providing support to fishermen and their families. And all of the fish sold at Pier Point Chippy, including cod, haddock and plaice, is MSC certified - which means it comes from well-managed, sustainable fisheries. The fish and chip shop was even named the best in the UK in The Times' 25 of the UK's best spots for seaside fish and chips. Describing the inside, The Times stated: "At sunset on a good day, streaks of orange fill the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround Pier Point, and you might as well be in California. "The restaurant is adjacent to the marina, with spectacular bay views, and it oozes atmosphere — you're in for a good time whether you settle on a wave-shaped red banquette indoors, at an outdoor table, or opt for takeaway with your bag of goodies on the beach." With my childhood home being close to the spot, I decided to see whether it lived up to the awards. The venue itself is split into two sections: a sit-down restaurant and a takeaway fish and chippy. And both sit right next to Torquay's sparkling water, a sprawling beach and a fascinating harbour – a setting so idyllic it feels like stepping onto a Mediterranean promenade. So instead of sitting at a table, I grabbed my portions and headed for the nearby pier to soak up the sun while enjoying my food. I visited the English Riviera and found delicious seafood festivals and hidden beaches Admittedly, Pier Point is on the pricier side. For three servings - a regular portion of haddock and chips, a regular portion of light cod and chips, and a regular portion of salt and pepper squid and chips plus a pot of curry sauce - it came to £38. After paying and walking to the pier, my expectations were already high. Despite the slightly steeper price, the portions were decent and we hadn't waited longer than five minutes for it all to be cooked up. Opening up the boxes, the aroma of hot, vinegary chips and crisp batter filled the air. The haddock itself was large and the batter was crisp and buttery. The cod similarly was a good size and cooked perfectly. The squid - which comes with a sauce of your choosing - was cooked just right, making it not too chewy. And if my dog could talk, I think he would agree the chips were super tasty - not too greasy and never feeling like 'just potato'. 6 Whilst it is on the pricier side, the portions are generous Credit: Cyann Fielding The fish also came with a slice of lemon each - a nice touch to add if you want it. So, was it worthy of the award? I'd say so. And the area surrounding the chippy makes it even better. If you choose to grab a portion from Pier Point, head onto the pier for a walk after to see beautiful views across the bay. Or head to the harbour to see some of the most glamourous boats and yachts around. Alternatively, if you head in the other direction, there is Abbey Sands - a large expansive beach with shallow waters and popular with families. 6 The menu has a range of different offerings including salt and pepper squid Credit: Cyann Fielding Torquay is dubbed the 'English Riviera' for a reason and as you wander around you will see many towering palm trees and vibrant flowers. During the summer months, there is also a giant Ferris wheel which boasts panoramic views of the coastline. Agatha Christie is also famous to Torquay as she spent much of her life there. Many of her novels are either set in or inspired by the seaside town and visitors can explore the Agatha Christie Mile - a walking trail featuring places Agatha visited and featured in her work. The Sun's head of travel Lisa Minot visited the English Riviera THE Sun's head of travel Lisa Minot visited the English Riviera and found delicious seafood festivals and hidden beaches - here's what she thought. We found ourselves on the seafront having built up quite the appetite. At the Offshore Bar & Restaurant on the harbourside we wolf down a seafood platter. Plump prawns and steaming mussels are accompanied by fresh crab, hot smoked salmon and a delicate pan-fried sea bass. The platter was created as part of the annual England's Seafood Feast — held this year from September 26 to October 12. The event celebrates the best of the English Riviera's fish and seafood, with everything from tours of Brixham Fish Market to barbecues and kayak cookouts. There are special offers at more than 30 restaurants across Brixham, Paignton, Torquay and the surrounding countryside. At night, we take the fishy feast up another level with a £55 five-course tasting menu featuring bass, brill and more at Circa, the intimate restaurant at the Sandridge Barton vineyard in the Dart Valley. A chance to explore the coastline on a thrilling, high-speed RIB (rigid inflatable boat) brought a completely different perspective of the sea. The best B&B in England can also be found in Torquay. From packing cubes to multi-strap bras: the holiday hacks you swear by

It's high holiday season, and whether you're heading to the coast, a city or the hills, a bit of pre-trip prep can go a long way. The Guardian's journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. To help you pack more thoughtfully, make the most of the beach, and stay sane on long journeys with small people, we've asked for your best holiday tips – and rounded up the best of our own, too. If you want to take more manageable luggage, two- (or even three-) in-one products are a godsend. Reader Carina suggests 'a decent multi-strap bra to cover all eventualities', such as this M&S Flexifit bra that can be worn three ways. Fashion editor Jess Cartner-Morley loves this swimsuit from John Lewis (now reduced to £27.50). 'The shoulder detailing and sturdy, non-transparent fabric make it perfect for wearing as a top, so it does double duty on holiday,' she suggested in her June style essentials. Fashion writer Peter Bevan selected these tailored swim shorts that could also pass as daywear for his 50 men's summer wardrobe updates. Shoes are tricky: you want something for every occasion, but don't want to bring seven pairs with you. So, you need a pair of catch-all shoes that are comfortable for walking but won't look out of place at dinner. Fashion writer Ellie Violet Bramley found just that for her roundup of the best summer shoes: these women's Keen sandals and these men's Chaco sandals. If you're in need of holiday outfit inspo, check out Jess's capsule holiday wardrobe. When it comes to beauty, travel minis will save suitcase space. Beauty writer Anita Bhagwandas picked her favourite Clinique travel moisturiser (currently on sale for £10) and two-in-one Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo and styling powder for her guide to the best travel toiletries. However, decanting your own products is far kinder to the planet (and cheaper, as you can use products you already own): she recommended these travel pots. Choose a lightweight, quick-drying hammam-style towel instead of a bulky beach towel, says Melanie Wilkinson in our summer style updates (she also found this cute coin purse key chain to carry loose change for emergency ice-creams). While reader Annie Jackson suggests packing baby powder: 'It works a treat for getting sand off your feet and hands.' Reader Shona recommends packing cubes: 'I organise my clothing by category in each cube so it's easy to find what I want without rummaging,' she says. She also advises noting what you did and didn't wear to inform your packing next time. If you're in need of some new luggage, look no further than Pete Wise's favourite budget pick from his test of the best suitcases and this genius Antler carry-on bag that Jess says has strangers stopping her in the street. Always check visa requirements before travelling: people from Europe heading to the UK now need to pay £16 for an ETA. Similarly, the US requires you to have an Esta even just for a layover. If you're planning on driving from the UK to Europe, here's everything you need to know. Learn a few basic words in the language – please, thank you, hello at least. Duolingo is a great free app to help you learn. Plus, make a list of everyone's must-do activities to ensure you don't miss anything. Never over-plan though – always leave space for spontaneity and rest (holidays are always more tiring than you think). Reader Jess Rogers has a tip for distracting kids on long journeys: 'Wrap up little inexpensive gifts from the charity shop and stagger them throughout the journey – or as a distraction to avoid a meltdown.' She also has a staycation hack: 'Find a new theme for every outing … how many birds/butterflies can you spot? Can you find a rainbow of flowers?' For more tips and tricks, check out our guide to surviving long journeys with kids. 'The only thing that gets me out of my tent': the camping essentials you need (and what you don't) The best kettles to save energy and speed up your cuppa, tested The best short shorts for men – and how to pull them off 'Astonishingly good value': the best supermarket tofu, tasted and rated Summer drinking should be just as special for the sober. Wine writer Sophia Longhi has been testing red, white, rose, bubbles and sparkling tea to bring you this selection of 28 genuinely delicious no- and low-alcohol wines. Her favourites include a French white that tastes like the real thing, a blanc de blancs fit for a celebration – and even a few decent red wines.
