U.P. targets 50% cut in road deaths by 2030: Transport commissioner

Hindustan Times29-06-2025
Uttar Pradesh aims to reduce road accident fatalities by 50% under its 'Vision 2030' roadmap, with regional inspectors (RIs) playing a crucial role, transport commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh said on Sunday at the National Regional Inspectors' Conference. RIs handle key responsibilities, driving tests, fitness certification, ATS operations, and enforcement, while also feeding into policy and procedural upgrades. (Sourced)
Singh called for sustained effort from all levels of the transport department, describing the target as more than just an administrative commitment. He stated that the state was implementing the 5E strategy, Education, Enforcement, Engineering, Emergency, and Environment, in line with national road safety objectives.
Singh highlighted the growing role of digital tools and platforms such as Sarthi, Vahan, e-Challan, iRAD (integrated road accident database), e-DAR (electronic detailed accident report), and VLTD (vehicle location tracking device). He added that AI-based chatbots and faceless services were transforming the sector. 'RIs are the bridge between advanced technology and on-ground enforcement,' he said.
RIs handle key responsibilities, driving tests, fitness certification, ATS operations, and enforcement, while also feeding into policy and procedural upgrades. Over 250 automated driving testing centres (ADTCs), 75 driving training centres (DTCs), over 10 institutes of driving and traffic research (IDTRs), and 16 driving training and testing institutes (DTTIs) are under development across the state, with each district to have three ATS units.
Singh urged RIs to evolve into data-driven, AI-capable professionals. 'Any misuse of authority or bias can damage the credibility of the entire system,' he warned.

Auto sales in July 2025: Exports save the day as local car sales enter slow lane

Car sales in India entered the slow lane in July 2025, only to be propped up by higher exports. The demand at dealerships is muted still. WagonR hatchbacks are seen parked at the manufacturing plant of Maruti Suzuki in Manesar. India's largest carmaker continues to restrict new car dispatches to dealerships amid a slump in demand and a rise in unsold inventory.(REUTERS) Indian carmakers shipped 3,40,772 units to dealerships last month as against 3,41,510 units in the year-ago period—registering a decline of 0.2%, according to wholesale data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers on Thursday. Exports rose 8.7% year-on-year to 67,292 units during the same time. That compares with 3,98,071 cars produced last month. Essentially, at 4,08,064 units, local car sales and exports outstripped monthly production. 'All vehicle segments posted stable performance in July 2025, though overall sentiments in the passenger vehicles segment has remained subdued so far,' SIAM's Director General Rajesh Menon said in a statement. To be sure, SIAM's auto sales data isn't an indicator of demand on the ground but of how much inventory they stock at dealerships. In reality, the decline is steeper. Retail car sales—calculated as the number of vehicle registrations on the government's VAHAN portal—fell 0.81% year-on-year to 2,97,722 units in July 2025, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. That's a yawning gap of 43,050 units between demand and supply. 'The Aashaada period and auspicious delivery days, combined with targeted schemes, new-model introductions and aggressive rural marketing, powered hinterland sales that picked up decisively towards month-end,' FADA President CS Vigneshwar said in a 7 August statement. 'Urban demand, however, remained muted due to low enquiry and restrained customer sentiment.' 'With inventory levels steady at around 55 days, calibrated discounting, streamlined finance facilitation and intensified urban outreach will be crucial for festive-season growth.'

Maruti Suzuki Escudo: Top 5 expectations from this SUV

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch at least two new SUVs in the Indian passenger vehicle market in this financial year. One of them is the first-ever electric car from the automaker, the e-Vitara . Besides that, there is the Maruti Suzuki Escudo, which is slated to launch in the market on September 3. This will come as a mid-size SUV, challenging the rivals such as Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos , among others. Maruti Suzuki has tasted immense success with models like the Brezza, Grand Vitara and even the Baleno premium hatchback-based crossover Fronx. Buoyed by this and in an attempt to capitalise on the maddening SUV mania, the biggest carmaker in India is aiming to go bigger in the utility vehicle segment. The e-Vitara and the Escudo will come as part of that strategy. Here are some key facts and expectations about the Maruti Suzuki Escudo, which aims to be positioned in a segment that has been witnessing rapid growth in demand. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To be sold through Arena Maruti Suzuki Escudo will not be a model sold through Nexa premium retail outlets. Instead, unlike the Grand Vitara, it will be sold alongside the Brezza, through the Arena retail network, which will help Maruti Suzuki to pose the new SUV as a more affordable offering and not a premium one. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To use Grand Vitara's platform While the Escudo is unlikely to be sold through Nexa alongside the Grand Vitara, it will use the same platform as the latter. This will allow the Escudo to have a large wheelbase, eventually ensuring more cabin and boot space, which means a comfortable experience for the occupants. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To get multiple powertrains The Maruti Suzuki Escudo will have multiple powertrain options, just like the Grand Vitara. There will be a 1.5-litre petrol engine that is capable of churning out 101 bhp peak power and 139 Nm of maximum torque. Besides that, there will be a petrol-CNG bi-fuel powertrain as well. Also, just like the Grand Vitara, the Escudo will be available with a petrol-hybrid powertrain. With this multiple-powertrain strategy, the Escudo will aim to attract a larger number of consumers with variable fuel preferences. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To get multiple transmissions Maruti Suzuki Escudo will come with multiple transmission options. The transmission choices of the SUV will include a five-speed manual gearbox, a six-speed automatic unit, and an e-CVT for the hybrid version. Expect the SUV to be available with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive options. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To come packed with features In an attempt to come as an upmarket model, the Maruti Suzuki Escudo will come packing a wide range of features aided by advanced technology. Some of them will be a Dolby Atmos-powered audio system, a powered tailgate, and most interestingly, a Level 2 ADAS suite. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. RTO Sends Notice To Cricketer Akash Deep Over ‘Dream' SUV

RTO has ceased the use of Akash Deep's newly purchased SUV on public roads due to incomplete registration formalities and suspended the dealer. After coming back from a successful trip to England, Indian cricketer Akash Deep bought his 'dream" car, purchasing a luxury SUV and posing with his sisters in a heartfelt post last week. However, the fast-bowler's dream possession has left him in an unexpected tangle, as a report alleged he had been sent a notice by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Lucknow. According to a report by the Times of India, the Lucknow RTO issued a notice to Akash Deep on Monday, August 11, with a directive ceasing the use of his newly purchased SUV on public roads due to incomplete registration formalities and missing the necessary high-security registration plate (HSRP) and also the third registration mark (TRM). The notice also directed India's rising young pacer to comply with all vehicle documentation requirements and appear before the concerned authorities within 72 hours. What Is The Notice? 'The RTO discovered that the temporary registration and registration certificate process remained incomplete on the Vahan portal," the report said about the vehicle that was purchased by Akash Deep on August 7, before the insurance was obtained on August 8. He also received a fancy registration number (UP32 QW 0041) for the same on August 9. The vehicle violated sections 39 and 41(6) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, missing the mandatory HSRP and TRM installations. 'The notice warns that driving the vehicle in its current state constitutes an offence under Section 192 of the MVA and empowers authorities to seize or detain the vehicle under Section 207," the authorities told the Bengal seamer. What's Next For Akash Deep? Akash Deep will now have to appear in person or send an authorised representative to visit the RTO office within the specified timeframe. The cricketer must submit all the necessary documents, including respective proofs of registration, insurance, and tax payment records. Lucknow RTO also sent a show-cause notice to the Chinhat-based automobile dealership, which delivered Akash Deep's SUV without the required HSRP and TRM. The authorities have suspended the car dealer, declaring, 'Legal action under Sections 192 and 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act will be initiated against the defaulting dealer." The controversy has emerged less than two weeks after Akash Deep's return from England after taking 13 wickets, including a match-winning 6/99 in Edgbaston, during India's impressive 2-2 series draw. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
