New Delhi [India], August 8 (ANI): Air India is intensifying efforts to improve the reliability of its legacy aircraft fleet, spanning the Airbus A320 family, Boeing 787s and Boeing 777s, as part of a wider operational upgrade programme, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson told its staff on Friday in a town hall meeting.
According to sources, the airline has zeroed in on persistent bottlenecks such as supply chain delays and spare parts shortages. It is working directly with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to fast-track solutions. The strategy involves close collaboration with shareholder partner Singapore Airlines, exchanging best practices on engineering, maintenance planning and operational efficiency.
During the meeting, CEO Campbell told airline employees that Air India is collaborating with our shareholder partner, Singapore Airlines, to exchange notes on industry best practices, sources said.
Sources said that the reliability push dovetails with Air India's multi-year retrofit programme, which aims to modernise cabin interiors and systems on both narrowbody and widebody aircraft.
On the operational front, Air India has begun the long-awaited retrofit of its legacy fleet. The first Boeing 787-8 widebody aircraft was sent to the US in July, with its return expected by December 2025. After that, two aircraft will undergo retrofit every month, with all 25 remaining 787-8s upgraded by June 2027. In the narrowbody segment, 14 of 27 A320neo aircraft have already been retrofitted and returned to service, with the remainder set for completion by September 2025, the CEO said.
Despite recent operational challenges - including the Iran airspace closure and engineering safety pauses - Air India's performance metrics remain strong. In the last two months alone, the carrier has flown approximately 4.4 million passengers across 33,000 flights, averaging 108,000 passengers daily with a year-to-date load factor of 84%, the CEO said.
On-time performance targets of 80% for domestic and 72% for international services are being met, while the airline's Net Promoter Score (NPS) rebounded sharply to 35 in July 2025, up from 23 in June and just 5 in July last year, the CEO added.
Sources also said that the CEO said in the meeting that 'more than 600 people across the Tata Group - under the banner of Air India Angels & Caregivers - mobilised in Ahmedabad to assist the next of kin of those impacted by the incident. Senior leadership has remained in constant touch with the families of crew members, while the airline has already disbursed interim relief compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to 194 families.
For employees, Air India has launched an array of support programmes, including Care Circles for ground and cabin crew, Reflection Sessions at its Aviation Academy, one-on-one counselling, peer support through Buddy @ AI, and online yoga sessions led by instructors from TCS Yoga Council and the Indian Yoga Association, the CEO said. KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) purchase of 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is a strategic manoeuvre aligned with the goals of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for economic transformation, industrial upskilling, and global trade recalibration. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday that the Boeing deal is a purely commercial decision, driven by MAG's operational requirements and growth strategy. The 13MP, which aims to drive sustainable growth based on value creation across sectors, involves investments of RM611 billion over five years starting in 2026, of which RM430 billion is marked for the government's development allocation. 'The Boeing aircraft acquisition reflects confidence in the long-term outlook of the aviation and tourism industries, and supports our national agenda of strengthening industrial linkages,' he emphasised, adding that the deal, which includes 18 MAX 8s and 12 MAX 10s — with an option for 30 more — is scheduled for delivery through 2030. The prime minister accordingly said that Boeing's local suppliers — including DRB-HICOM Bhd's subsidiary Composite Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTRM), SME Aerospace Sdn Bhd, and UPECA Aerotech Sdn Bhd — generated over RM25 billion in revenue and supported more than 30,000 jobs in 2024 alone. These firms supply components across Boeing's global aircraft lines, from nacelles and wing parts to electrical harnesses. Their long-term integration into the aerospace value chain aligns with the 13MP's focus on cultivating strategic industries with high growth potential, as well as goals under the National Investment Aspirations (NIA). A prime example is CTRM, which has been operating for over three decades. This company serves as a key Tier-2 supplier for both Airbus and Boeing, manufacturing composite parts such as wing components and fan cowls for various aircraft. According to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Airbus accounted for 84 per cent of CTRM's revenue in 2023, while Boeing contributed 11 per cent. MAG, which already operates 13 MAX 8s, is phasing out its ageing 737-800s. But the significance of the current deal extends far beyond aircraft cycles. It serves as a cornerstone in Malaysia's aspiration to become an ASEAN aerospace hub. The aircraft order also reinforces 13MP's emphasis on strengthening international economic linkages to support long-term industrial competitiveness. One factor tipping the scales towards Boeing was delivery availability, made possible by open MAX production slots amid slower Chinese demand. From a 13MP lens, such rapid capacity onboarding supports Malaysia's ambitions to enhance regional trade, boost tourism flows, and position KL International Airport (KLIA) as a competitive transit hub. Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines' Boeing order is not a zero-sum game for Airbus. The consortium remains a core pillar of Malaysia's aerospace footprint, with a wing assembly facility in Negeri Sembilan and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) support in Subang, Selangor. MAG recently doubled its A330neo widebody order to 40 aircraft. Group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail said the A330neo continues to deliver the right balance of operational efficiency, range and cabin comfort to support MAG's network and growth strategy. 'This additional order reinforces our long‑term vision of building a future‑ready fleet,' he said during the confirmation of MAG's 20 A330‑900neo firm order in Toulouse, France last month. NEW DELHI: India wants countries to agree a new code of conduct on hiring each other's airline staff after raising concerns that its fast-growing aviation system is being stifled by the poaching of Indian pilots and cabin crew without adequate notice. India, one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, is wrestling with a shortage of experienced pilots, denting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aspiration of developing a job-creating global aviation hub. The recent fatal crash of an Air India jetliner has sparked tighter scrutiny of the sector. But foreign airlines are repeatedly hiring skilled staff from Indian airlines, 'adversely impacting India's ability to develop its civil aviation sector in an orderly manner,' India said in an Aug 1 working paper submitted to the UN's aviation agency, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). 'Airlines from other (countries) tend to recruit experienced pilots, engineers, technicians, and cabin crew from Indian carriers, preventing India's civil aviation sector from achieving planned and orderly growth,' India wrote in the paper, without identifying any foreign airline by name. 'This practice creates a vicious cycle where Indian carriers are forced to continuously recruit and train replacement personnel by diverting resources from expansion activities and operational improvements.' The paper was released on the ICAO website ahead of its triennial assembly. It has not previously been reported. India's Civil Aviation Ministry was not immediately available for comment. India's government said in April the country would need 30,000 pilots over the next 15–20 years, up from the current 6,000–7,000, as airlines collectively had more than 1,700 aircraft on order. India's domestic aviation sector is led by IndiGo and Air India, while all major international airlines from Emirates to British Airways to Lufthansa operate regular flights. In 2023, Air India exchanged barbs with Akasa Air over the poaching of pilots domestically. The working paper asks for the creation of a code of conduct on the movement of skilled aviation workers among ICAO's member countries. It doesn't specify how the code of conduct would work. – Reuters
