Women help desk staff trained to handle sensitive cases with empathy
Organised by the Lucknow police commissionerate in collaboration with Unicef, the training took place on Aug 2 and 4 at the Reserve Police Lines. The sessions were held by assistant commissioner of police (Women & crime) Soumya Pandey and chaired by deputy commissioner of police (Crime) Kamlesh Kumar Dixit.
The initiative focused on enhancing the capabilities of help desk officers, who are often the first point of contact for victims of domestic violence, dowry harassment, sexual assault and Pocso-related crimes.
"The aim was to move beyond procedural responses and cultivate trust, patience and a non-judgmental attitude among personnel," said Pandey.
The programme featured interactive sessions with experts from across India, including mental health professionals, legal experts and child rights specialists. Key themes included understanding trauma, providing psychological first aid and ensuring dignity and safety in victim interactions.
Dixit said that the training emphasised building a support system rooted in empathy and sensitivity. "Officers were trained to create a secure environment where victims feel safe to speak, without fear or hesitation," he said.
Topics covered included empathetic communication, trauma-informed care, appropriate legal handling of domestic disputes, sexual harassment, dowry abuse and cases under the Pocso Act.
Pandey stressed the importance of such training, mentioning that victims often hold back due to perceived apathy or harsh behaviour by police. "A humane, sensitive approach at the first point of contact can make the difference between silence and justice," she said.

Man sentenced to 20-years of rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping, raping minor girl
A city court sentenced a 22-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a minor girl in May 2021, said police officers on Friday. The incident occurred on May 6, 2021. (Getty Images) The verdict was pronounced by additional sessions Judge Jasmine Sharma, who presides over a designated special fast-track court. The convict was found guilty under Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (kidnapping with intent to compel marriage) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Along with the sentence, the court imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict. Special public prosecutor Sunil Kumar Parmar said the time already spent by the accused in judicial custody will be deducted from the overall sentence, as per court orders. 'The incident occurred on May 6, 2021, when the victim, a Class IX student from a private school in Bilaspur, was found missing by her parents as she failed to leave for school,' Parmar said. After failing to locate her, her father lodged a missing person's complaint with the police. During the investigation, police learned that a man from the same neighbourhood had abducted the girl. However, tracking the duo proved difficult, as the girl did not have a mobile phone, and the accused refrained from using one to avoid detection, officers added. The victim was eventually rescued on July 4, 2021, from Hoshiarpur in Punjab, where she had been held captive. 'Based on her statement, the accused was arrested within hours from Panchgaon Chowk in Manesar,' Parmar said. Parmar added that the minor's medical examination confirmed she was raped multiple times. 'She testified against the accused in court and revealed he had lured her on the pretext of marriage. Other witnesses also supported the prosecution's case,' he said.

High Court takes BIG decision on Kohli's RCB teammate Yash Dayal in minor's rape case
Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal. (PIC - X) New Delhi: The Rajasthan High Court has dismissed a stay on the arrest of Virat Kohli's RCB teammate, fast bowler Yash Dayal in the case of the rape of a minor girl. What were the rulings of the High Court? The court held that as the victim is a minor, no interim relief is possible to the accused cricketer against arrest. Justice Sudesh Bansal hearing the case in Jaipur also ordered the case diary and fixed the next hearing on August 22. What did Yash Dayal's attorney say? Yash Dayal's lawyer, Kunal Jaiman, in the course of the hearing contended that the case was a part of a bigger conspiracy to tarnish the image of the cricketer. He contended that the same case of rape had previously been lodged in Ghaziabad, which was stayed by the Allahabad High Court. 'Just seven days after that, another FIR was registered in Jaipur. A gang seems to be involved in blackmailing by filing such cases,' Yash Dayal's lawyer alleged. What is the Jaipur case? But Sanganer police station in-charge Anil Jaiman revealed the Jaipur case details, adding that the complainant, who was a minor at the time of the incident, had met Yash Dayal while watching a cricket match. She then blamed Yash Dayal for sexually assaulting her nearly two years ago on the assurance of assisting her in her cricket career. The police also said Yash Dayal raped the girl for the second time in Sitapura hotel, Jaipur, during the season of IPL 2025 after the girl was invited to the room by Yash Dayal. Since the girl was 17-years-old at the time of the first rape, an FIR was registered under Sections of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Interestingly, Dayal had earlier created a commotion by claiming to have posted communal content on his Instagram handle two years back. He later clarified that while two contentious reports were posted from his account, but he did not post them from his account.
