Neeraj Pandey's spy universe expands with Special Ops Season 2: ‘The unsung hero is the reason…'
'There are such unheard stories in the domain that it naturally becomes a magnet for any storyteller,' said Panday at the trailer launch of Special Ops season 2 in Mumbai on Monday. 'The unsung hero also becomes the primary reason because the missions are covert and under plausible denial. Not many in the audience are aware of these adventures,' he added.
'I didn't think it would become so big when I did season 1. Nobody is so narcissistic to think so. Once season 1 came out, we realised it has a longer life,' said Kay Kay Menon, who plays Himmat Singh, a senior R&AW officer in Special Ops.

In season 2, the show assumes an additional layer of thematic resonance in the form of a cyber threat. Kay Kay admitted, unlike his character, he's far from a tech geek. 'I'm not even in the KG class of anything to do with cyber. I don't know anything about it. To play Himmat Singh, who knows all about it, is quite a task. I'm so bad at tech that if I want to post on social media, I've to ask my team how to do that,' admitted Kay Kay.
Tahir Raj Bhasin enters the franchise as the chief antagonist in season 2. 'Joining a franchise is like coming into the hostel as a new entrant. Everyone knows each other. The first few days are tough, but you have to gel and get into the part very quickly,' said Tahir.
On his role of a 'business tycoon who runs a tech mafia,' Tahir added, 'I was blown away by how unpredictable, layered, and contemporary he is. He doesn't need muscle. He just has control over data. It opens up several questions about what is intelligence and national security today.'
While Tahir is the new entrant, favourites from season 1 return too. Vinay Pathak said he's lucky to have made it to season 2 as Delhi Police officer Abbas, given co-director Shivam Nair had plans to kill his character in season 1 itself. 'Shivam Nair called me before season 1 and asked, 'Abbas ko maar de?' But he's given me a new lease of life. I'm still in the same costume, haven't gotten promoted, and am still riding the same bike across Delhi. I don't mind not getting promoted as long as they keep fuelling my bike and I keep doing Special Ops,' quipped Pathak.
Karan Tacker also returns as spy Farooq Ali, who was seen getting abducted in Nepal at the end of Special Ops 1.5. 'Neeraj sir has a typical way of writing the screenplay. There are 3-4 lines and then 'action' written in all caps and with exclamation marks. You feel, 'Achha itna hi hai.' Cut to: You're rehearsing for eight days and shooting for two days for one action piece. That is Neeraj Panday for you,' said Tacker.

Both Tacker and Saiyami Kher said they have a gripe with the makers: they want to share screen space with Kay Kay Menon. 'Unfortunately, wo India mein baith ke boring kaam karte hain aur hum duniya ghoomte hain while he gives instructions on phone. Hopefully, Kay Kay sir comes with us in the next season and we get to work with him on field,' said Kher.
She'll return as agent Juhi in season 2, and is glad that she gets to do a lot of action as a female spy. 'For women, there are certain roles which people don't write and you wonder why. But even before Special Ops, what Neeraj sir did with Taapsee Pannu in Baby stood out for me. I hadn't seen anything like that in Indian cinema before. I love doing action. I love beating up guys. That's what women feel like on the inside when guys tease them on the streets. I'm just happy he gave me that opportunity,' said Kher.
She claimed that Special Ops season 1 set the tone for her filmography in the last five years. 'After the little action I did in the first season, I've played a cop (Jaat), a firefighter (Agni), a cricketer (Ghoomer). Only a pilot and someone from the Navy is left. I've got to play such fiery women in the last five years, which are rarely written for women. I'm very grateful he had two women agents in season 1,' added Kher.

Tahir Raj Bhasin opens up about the ability to play protagonist and antagonist with equal ease
Tahir Raj Bhasin is making his mark in Indian entertainment with diverse roles. He reflects on his experiences in 'Mardaani', 'Chhichhore', and 'Special Ops'. Bhasin shares insights on working with Neeraj Pandey and never meeting Kay Kay Menon until promotions. He appreciates the success of 'Chhichhore' and newcomers in the industry. In the ever-evolving landscape of Indian entertainment, Tahir Raj Bhasin has carved out a unique space for himself—effortlessly moving between intense thrillers, emotional dramas, and sharply etched grey characters. Whether it's his breakout role in Mardaani , the brooding rebel in Chhichhore , or his latest turn in the mytho-tech thriller Special Ops , Bhasin's trajectory reflects a sharp eye for narrative and a hunger for layered characters. In Neeraj Pandey's Special Ops Season 2 he played the role of Sudheer who wants to unsettle the financial stability of India. Though the show has big names like Kay Kay Menon and Prakash Raj part of the show, Tahir's character hardly has any scenes with them which was part of his character's aura. Talking about his role he says , ' My character is a bit of a puppet master, so he is in isolation. ' Turns out that Neeraj Pandey was his closest co-star. Talking about him Tahir says , ' He's a great co-star just because he's so well-prepared… There's so much precision because he writes himself as well. So, he's very particular. If the pauses are here, then this is how you should do a man of very few words, which can be intimidating to begin with. But in a few days, you realize that you learn to sort of read between the when I spoke to other actors who'd done season one with him, ( said that if he's not saying anything means he likes what you're doing. So, I was a lot more confident working with him then. ' Interestingly, Bhasin never met co-star Kay Kay Menon on set. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Japanese AI invention allows you to speak 68 languages instantly. The idea? Genius. Enence 2.0 Undo 'It was an intentional choice not to meet KK Menon before the show started. I thought it would be more interesting to shoot without having met him because that goes more with the collector. He's never met him.' Their first meeting happened only during promotions. 'Meeting him was like meeting a college senior… someone who's just seen all the things that you're going to experience already. ' One of the major successes of Tahir's career has been Chhichhore, where he played the role of college senior Derek. THe film also starred Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead. Talking about the film he said , ' Derek was cool, and he was a stud at the same time, sporty… everything an actor could ask for. Also there are rare examples of a film that gets box office success, critical acclaim and a national award and Chhichhore got all of it. Sayaara which has become the flavour of the country recently zoomed past Chhichhore's numbers at the box office. Talking about the success by newcomers like Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, he said , ' 'It's been a while since small romantic film, hit the box office… and to have newcomers who are from outside of the industry sort of navigating this wave is just simply amazing.' But what about the recurring perception of him playing roles that echo Mardaani ? 'It's actually been 10 years between Mardani and Special ops 2. And what I've had is the benefit of working with a lot of great directors like Kabir Khan in 83 to Nitesh Tiwari in Chhichore to Nandita Das in Manto. So the idea has always been to like create a mold and then break it. But one thing that always sticks with anyone in the creative pursuits is what you debut with and when you do it well.I'm very proud of Mardaani and now the thor part of film is being made, I never thought a film that I started off with would turn into a franchise. Iit takes a certain skill to play protagonist and antagonist , what my takeaway from the industry has been the ability to do a a romantic drama and an all-out thriller with the same amount of ease. (10:28) What I haven't done yet is an all-out comedy, which would be great. Up next, he steps into the world of mystery with a Netflix series starring Parineeti Chopra , directed by Rensil D'Silva. 'It's a show… and again, that's a genre that I haven't been a part of.'He also has the third season of Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein in the pipeline. Disruptive, deliberate, and deeply self-aware—Tahir Raj Bhasin continues to walk his path, one carefully chosen part at a time.

Just Like Shah Rukh Khan, Tahir Raj Bhasin Hopes To Redefine Bollywood
Tahir Raj Bhasin shared that he aspires to bring a similar blend of charm and disruption to today's cinema like Shah Rukh Khan who redefined stardom in the 1990s. Tahir Raj Bhasin is gaining a lot of recognition for his role as an antagonist in Special Ops 2.0. In his latest interview, Tahir opened up about how he manifests his career to turn out. He shared that he aspires to bring a similar blend of charm and disruption to today's cinema like Shah Rukh Khan who redefined stardom in the 1990s. Tahir discussed the dynamic environment of Indian cinema and the influences that continue to shape his journey. In conversation with Hindustan Times, Tahir Raj Bhasin said, '90s SRK was disruptive. It was the villain in Baazigar and the charmer that we saw in DDLJ. SRK today is an icon, but what he was doing in the 90s, were all the kind of heroes like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na, who were flawed and had an element of charm to them. And so comes the idea to me that I would lend my skill to stories that are disruptive and drive them as entertainingly as possible." Moving on, Tahir described Bollywood as a 'living organism" while reflecting on the current state of the Hindi film business, particularly in relation to the thriving South film Industry. He mentioned that Bollywood evolves and has to change and adapt to the audience. On the professional front, Tahir has wrapped a mystery thriller for Netflix with Parineeti Chopra, directed by Renzil D'Silva and produced by Siddharth P. Malhotra. Though the actor did not divulge much about the role, he noted that it is a new genre for him. Tahir played the role of Collector, the antagonist in Neeraj Pandey's Special Ops 2, alongside Kay Kay Menon. Special Ops 2 follows Himmat Singh and his team of secret spies. This time, they're fighting an AI threat rather than terrorists. Tahir's character kidnaps India's renowned scientist, who has access to all key sites and knowledge about the country. The Collector's motive for the kidnapping was to gain control of India. First Published: July 28, 2025, 12:41 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
