UK bank launches regular savings account with whopping 7.10% interest rate
Zopa, the digital bank based in the UK, has unveiled a competitive regular savings account boasting a hefty 7.10% interest rate. Regular savings accounts are tailored for individuals who wish to save a fixed sum each month over a set term, typically 12 months, and earn a higher interest rate than standard savings accounts as a result.
Savers can deposit up to £300 per month, allowing a maximum total deposit of £3,600 over a 12-month period. Interest is paid at the end of the term, with a full £3,600 deposit expected to earn around £255.60, bringing the total balance to approximately £3,855.60.

There's no minimum deposit required to open Zopa's Regular Saver pot; however, you need a Zopa bank account and a Smart Saver first, which requires a minimum deposit of £1.
After 12 months, the regular saver converts to an easy access account with a 3.5% rate, but Zopa said customers can open a new regular saver to continue earning the higher rate, reports the Express.
Unlike many regular savings accounts, savers are allowed to withdraw money at any time without penalty. However, they'll only be able to replace the money within the monthly allowance of £300. For example, if you withdraw £500 but want to put money back in, you can only deposit up to £300.
To open the account, you must be aged 18 or over, be a UK resident and have tax residency in the UK, and have a Zopa bank account and Smart Saver account.
Zopa has launched a new product alongside its current account, 'Biscuit', which allows customers to earn up to £256 annually through a mix of cashback and interest.
The account offers 2% annual interest on all balances and provides 2% cashback on household bills paid by direct debit, capped at £1,500 of direct debits per annum. This account also grants customers access to the 7.10% AER regular savings account.
What other options are available?
Savers can deposit up to £200 each month, meaning the pot can increase to a total of £1,200, with withdrawals not permitted until the account matures.
With a maximum monthly investment of £200, savers will accumulate £1,227.53, including £27.53 in interest. So, while it may boast a market-leading AER, its six-month term restricts the total interest earned.
First Direct offers a competitive 7% AER over 12 months. The account permits a higher monthly deposit of £300, which totals up to £3,600 in savings over a year.
At the end of the term, savers will have £3,736.50, including £136.50 in interest. Although First Direct's interest rate is lower, the longer term and higher deposit limit make it a potentially better option for accumulating larger savings.
Other providers offering competitive interest rates on regular accounts include The Co-Operative Bank with a 7% AER, Nationwide Building Society with a 6.5% AER, and Lloyds Bank with a 6.25% AER on its Club Lloyds account.

AOL dial-up to shut down as early inernet pioneer to hang up the phone for good
One of the first internet giants will soon be shut down after 34 years. While many people may be more shocked to hear that service is still running today, AOL is set to dial-up for the last time. For those who used the internet in its early days, you will still be able to recall the array of beeps and boops that came with dial-up technology. Back before smartphones, iPads, and laptops, telephone lines were how households connected to the internet in the 1990s. However 34 years on, we are definitely in a whole new era of technology where this service is no longer required. AOL, otherwise known as America Online, will be shutting down its dial-up internet service for customers in Canada and the US, reports the Express. This shut down may seem like a long time coming as AOL UK was discontinued back 2006 after the firm was purchased by the Carphone Warehouse. However, for those feeling nostalgic, the brand can still be accessed through old email addresses. In fact, you can even still sign up for an account. The shut down of AOL across the pond is set to take place on September 30, 2025, leaving any households who refused to switch to modern broadband services with two options. Either make the much needed upgrade or go without the internet. Dial-up technology was all the rage back in the '90s, which used standard telephone lines to access the internet. This was the perfect system at the time as emails and the web were mostly text-based and websites were much simpler. However, this revolutionary system would struggle to function properly in the current day and age due to websites and games requiring massive amounts of data to load up. In fact, to download a 1GB file, dial-up technology would need one day, 15 hours and 40 minutes as the service had an average data speed of 56 kilobytes per second. In comparison, UK regulator Ofcom says that the average UK broadband speed in 2025 is 223 Mbps - meaning the same file could be downloaded in less than 36 seconds. AOL website states: "AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. "This service will no longer be available in AOL plans. As a result, on September 30, 2025 this service and the associated software, the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, which are optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections, will be discontinued." The beeps, boops and sometimes screeches from AOL were a regular sound in households across the US and the UK. This was due to the portals, email services and internet connection it provided at the time. However, some of the AOL products didn't let households access all types of websites. AOL became even more popular in 1998 thanks to Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's film 'You've Got Mail'. Throughout the film the characters send love letters to each other through AOL email, which inspired others to do the same. The current AOL is owned by Yahoo, which some web users choose as their go to browser. However, it is more likely today that Microsoft or Google has become the default. According to the BBC, in 2023 fewer than 300,000 people in the US reported using a dial-up internet connection. Often hailed as the gateway to the Lake District due to its proximity to the famed national park, Kendal is also celebrated for its iconic Kendal Mint Cake. Yet, it's the vibrant mix of independent retailers that truly sets Kendal apart, boasting around 70 diverse shops, cafes, boutiques, and market stalls that are thriving in a time when others across the country are struggling. This is a testament to the town's robust community spirit, with no better example than the eclectic New Shambles. Here, businesses housed in properties owned by a unitarian chapel don't just coexist but actively support one another, creating a hub that's been dubbed the "heart of Kendal" for its unique charm. Claire Carlton, who runs Flowers By Arrangement, knows the challenges of high street trading all too well, yet credits the local camaraderie for her survival. She recalls the financial strain at her former location: "My rent was absolutely crucifying me to the point where I was nearly going to call it a day," reports the Express. She believes such support is crucial for independents: "People like them are the reason us little independent shops will survive. Because the rent is more affordable, we can be more affordable." After 25 years of running her shop in Kendal, she lauded the town's community spirit and described New Shambles as "feels like the heart of Kendal". "People love coming down here," she said. "They love little independent shops and without it here, Kendal would be a boring place. Kendal is full of independent shops (Image: Jonathan Buckmaster) "They just love the ambience down here. There's a lot of tourism trade down here. "It's what Kendal is all about, all coming together as a community. Us little independent shops, we look after each other and that's really important." John Davison, 68, who operates a pet shop close by, remarked: "Everyone looks after everyone else. "It's a town, but it's like a village community." Sandra Rodrigues, 53, founder of Begin With Nature eight years ago, is keen to see more efforts to draw new shoppers to Kendal. "We still have customers who come in here for the first time when they have lived here all their lives," she observed. "There are still quite a few locals who don't know about us." She's convinced that enticing more people could open up significant prospects. "Everyone here helps everyone." Despite facing its own set of challenges, Kendal's distinctive layout is cherished by those who call it home. David Donnison, 87, who relocated to Kendal from Rotherham to be nearer to his family, remarked: "It's very, very compact. "It's good for transport. Where I live, you can get a bus into town, although I do walk because it is only a mile and a half. "There are a number of big shops that have closed down, but it's got lots of cafes." Roger Brownsord, 77, echoed the sentiment about Kendal's compactness and ease of travel, while Georgia Gibson, aged 26, shared: "My husband is also from the area and we feel it's quite a safe place to raise our children. "The place itself is beautiful. A lot of people would like to raise their families here. It's just a shame that it's quite difficult to get on the housing market. "In the past 10 years, it definitely seems there are a lot of shops that have shut down. "However, there's always somewhere to go and there's a lovely independent businesses precinct." You're able to get out on a weekend to hike and enjoy the scenery. "You definitely appreciate it every single day."
