Prahari app replaces British era ‘Beat Book' for keeping records within police circles

Time of India26-04-2025

Prayagraj: The hi-tech '
Prahari app
' has replaced the colonial-era '
Beat Book
', also known as 'Gopniya Patrika', which was traditionally used to document details of religious sites, banks, historical conflicts, demographics, notable individuals, crime trends and local offenders.
All beat in-charges at police stations are now required to upload details of their beats on the app using their unique IDs.
Officials claimed that apart from maintaining the Beat Book manually, most officials are now working on the app for their routine work. Besides maintaining data and records, the app is also helping police officials to upload the verification status of arm licence holders, tenant and character verification under the citizen service scheme.
SP (Pratapgarh) Anil Kumar told TOI: "The Prahari App is a unique communication tool for policemen that helps to enhance beat policing and create effective communication between beat police officials (popularly known as halka in-charge) and higher police authorities."

He said with the Prahari app, the policemen can manage beat policing effectively through digital communications.
"The app also allows thana in-charges at police stations to easily assign and track activities and tasks allocated to beats. All the beat activities can be easily monitored by top officials at district, range, zone, and HQs, as and when needed," Kumar said.
Beat in-charges can update all information related to a particular area and share it with senior police authorities. Apart from sharing and updating current information related to crime and criminals, the app is also helpful in sharing the locations of crimes or incidents.
A senior cop said, "The app is an online mode to update required information and enhance
e-policing

This week's US-China trade talks are seen as pivotal for the global economy. Tariffs imposed in past years have disrupted everything from electronics to heavy equipment. Though those tariffs are currently paused, no permanent deal has been reached. Analysts believe that progress in these talks could help avoid a potential economic slowdown or even a recession, especially if they result in the reduction or removal of tariffs on both sides. A positive outcome could also reignite investor confidence and fuel another leg up in the US stock market rally. These modest moves reflect investor hesitancy. Market players are clearly waiting for concrete news before making big decisions. The S&P 500 remains just 2.5% below its all-time high, buoyed by hopes that the US may reach trade agreements that roll back tariffs globally. What's driving the stock market recovery in 2025? One major factor behind the stock market's strong recovery has been the belief that President Donald Trump will reduce trade barriers as part of broader global deals. After plunging by nearly 20% from its peak two months ago, the S&P 500 has made a swift comeback. That optimism is largely driven by expectations that smoother trade relations — particularly with major economies like China — will relieve pressure on multinational companies and bring stability back to supply chains. Are tariffs still in effect, and why does it matter now? Currently, both the US and China have put a pause on new tariffs, but existing ones remain. These tariffs have cost industries billions, increased consumer prices, and created uncertainty for global manufacturers. What's important now is whether these paused tariffs are finally lifted. This could significantly improve the flow of goods, lower costs, and potentially lead to more business investments, especially in sectors like tech, agriculture, and manufacturing. Could US-China trade deals shape the next market trend? Absolutely. Any meaningful breakthrough in US-China trade negotiations could serve as a key catalyst for markets. Investors are looking for long-term clarity, not just temporary relief. If Monday's talks in London show signs of real progress, we could see increased investor confidence, reduced market volatility, and fresh momentum across Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq. But without a deal, continued uncertainty could weigh on the markets in the coming weeks. What's driving the market today? Trade talks between the U.S. and China in London continue to shape investor sentiment, contributing to the Dow's decline and a slight Nasdaq boost. Inflation concerns remain front and center , with traders awaiting this week's CPI and core PCE data releases. Expectations suggest the Federal Reserve may hold interest rates steady for now. Sector trends show technology stocks powering the gains, while healthcare lags behind. What should investors watch next? Investors should keep a close eye on the statements or outcomes from the US-China meetings. Any mention of progress on tariff rollbacks, trade agreements, or economic cooperation could trigger immediate market reactions. It's also worth noting that the Federal Reserve's next move, broader economic indicators, and the 2024 US election climate remain in focus as secondary factors influencing the market direction. FAQs: Q1: Why did the Dow Jones fall 185 points today? The Dow Jones dropped due to investor caution ahead of the US-China trade talks. Q2: What are US-China trade talks about? The talks aim to ease tariffs and settle long-running trade disputes affecting the global economy.

Handcuffed & crying: Indian student's US airport ordeal sparks outrage; Indian embassy responds

An Indian-American entrepreneur, Kunal Jain , shared a video on X showing an Indian student being handcuffed by police at Newark airport . Jaishankar adding that the young boy was supposed to board the same flight as him but didn't. "I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy," wrote Jain while tagging the Indian embassy in the US. Reacting to the video, the Indian Embassy in New York on Monday said that it was in touch with local authorities in this regard and the Consulate remains ever committed to the welfare of Indian Nationals. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) Video spark online outrage His post has gone viral all over social media with people reposting it and news websites covering it. The incident marks one of the many atrocities being faced by Indian students who are fearful and unsure of their future in America. Live Events — SONOFINDIA (@SONOFINDIA) Many people commented on Jain's post, condemning him for posting the incident and not staying around to help the young student. "So easy to write stories. If you were that concerned why didn't you get him released?" wrote a person. Others questioned the reason why Indian students went to America for higher studies in the first place with the high cost and low safety the country ensures. "Now US is not your dream land. It has become hell for you." "Indian students must seriously rethink studying in the US. It's no longer the dreamland we were sold. The reality today is stark; rising violence, internal strife, racial discrimination, and institutions overrun with woke nonsense," wrote another. A person marked how the way the student was being dealt with in public was not justified, writing, "Irrespective of his status, situation, language which you might not understand or you might not convince with his answers, totally agree. But not a way to treat in front of everyone like this." Another shared how being deported might just be a good thing for the student with India's rising development. "Deported to India? Why should he be sad? I mean he is going back to a rising superpower!" While most social media users were offended on behalf of the students, others asked if he had legally migrated to the States. "Sorry but he has an illegal status. He should be deported. He can come back to his country. There is no shortage of dreams here."
