GMA Network5 days ago
A passenger boat ran aground along R.T. Lim Boulevard in Zamboanga City reportedly due to strong waves and winds brought by inclement weather.
Personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard responded immediately and are verifying whether the boat had passengers on board at that time and where it came from.
Meanwhile, passengers aboard another vessel traveling to Zamboanga City from Isabela City, Basilan were distressed after the boat was battered by strong waves and winds accompanied by rainfall on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Some passengers were seen wearing life vests as a safety precaution.
According to the uploader of the video, the vessel managed to dock safely at the Zamboanga City Port after sea conditions normalized.
Strong winds and heavy rain also damaged several stalls at Paseo del Mar, a tourist destination, in Barangay Rio Hondo.
The incident disrupted the livelihood of vendors in the area.
Authorities are still assessing the damage to structures.
Several trees were also uprooted and clearing operations were conducted immediately.
Around 220 families were displaced because of strong waves, flooding, and uprooted trees caused by heavy rains and strong winds in the city.
'We see to it that appropriate responses are given to residents affected,' Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office Head, Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, said.
In Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, a landslide blocked a road in Purok Sapa Bayol, Barangay Malambuhangin.
According to state weather bureau PAGASA, the inclement weather that affects Mindanao was due to the effects of the southwest monsoon (Habagat) being intensified by Tropical Storm #CrisingPH.

Mika Salamanca, Will Ashley volunteer in soup kitchens for families affected by inclement weather

Mika Salamanca and Will Ashley braved the weather to extend help to those affected by Typhoon Crising and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). On Instagram Wednesday, Sparkle GMA Artist Center shared photos showing the 'Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition' housemates taking part in food preparations. 'From the PBB kitchen to kitchens for-a-cause. Despite the heavy rains and in the spirit of bayanihan, Mika Salamanca and Will Ashley stepped up to serve — volunteering in two soup kitchens in Quezon City and Marikina for families affected by Typhoon Crising and the Southwest Monsoon,' Sparkle wrote in the caption. Aside from preparing hot meals, Mika and Will also helped in raising funds online to support more communities in need. Their efforts were made in partnership with the Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network of the Angat Buhay Foundation. The triple threat of Crising, Habagat-induced rains, and low-pressure areas contributed to heavy rains — and heavy flooding — in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. On Wednesday, PAGASA said three dams in Luzon continued to release water amid heavy rains due to the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and a low-pressure area. For those looking to donate to the victims of the heavy rains, here is a list of organizations with relief operations. —Carby Rose Basina/CDC, GMA Integrated News
